Virgin Media O2 switched on its O2 5G+ service across Bristol on 6 October 2026. The operator says up to 495,000 people could benefit, but that is a potential-reach estimate—not a count of connected customers or a guarantee of signal at every home, business or street. To use 5G+, customers need an eligible O2 Pay Monthly plan, a compatible device, one of O2’s latest SIMs or an eSIM, and coverage where they are.
Where is O2 5G+ available in Bristol?
Virgin Media O2 says 5G+ is live across Bristol, including the city centre, Harbourside, surrounding neighbourhoods and Avonmouth. Its 6 October 2026 announcement estimates that up to 495,000 people could benefit. The figure describes the operator’s potential reach, not the number of customers already using the service. Virgin Media O2’s Bristol announcement also says its rollout programme aims for at least 90% outdoor 5G+ coverage in each town or city included. That programme-wide minimum is not a claim that 90% of Bristol residents have coverage, nor does it establish indoor reception or service at a particular address.
For a street- or address-specific answer, check O2’s coverage checker. A city-level launch does not confirm the signal inside a particular building, and O2 says devices use the best available network where 5G+ is unavailable.
What is O2 5G+ and how is it different from earlier 5G?
O2 5G+ is Virgin Media O2’s consumer name for its 5G Standalone (5G SA) service. The key difference from the earlier 5G Non-Standalone (NSA) setup is the network core: NSA uses 5G radio access with a 4G core, while SA uses a 5G core. Ofcom says SA can deliver much lower latency than NSA. Latency is the time data takes to travel across a network; lower latency can make responsive applications feel quicker, although the actual result depends on conditions and the service being used.

Ofcom’s Mobile Matters 2024 said almost all UK 5G at the time was NSA. Its analysis covers data from October 2023 to March 2024 and combines NSA and SA connections in its 5G analysis. It therefore provides technical and historical context, not a direct NSA-versus-SA test or a measurement of Bristol’s 2026 network.
What benefits has O2 announced for Bristol?
Virgin Media O2 describes 5G+ as offering faster speeds, lower latency and improved reliability. Those are the operator’s stated aims and expected benefits; its Bristol launch announcement does not provide local speed-test results, measured latency figures or an independently verified reliability comparison. Your experience can vary with location, signal, device and network conditions.

Professor Robert Joyce, O2’s Director of Mobile Access Engineering, said the rollout was part of the company’s £700 million Mobile Transformation Plan and would bring 5G+ to more customers across Bristol. His comments appeared in the operator’s announcement and represent the company’s view of the upgrade, rather than independent performance findings.
Who can use O2 5G+?
O2’s current guidance says customers need all of the following:

- A compatible 5G+ device.
- An O2 Pay Monthly plan.
- One of O2’s latest SIMs or an eSIM.
- 5G+ coverage in the location where they want to use it.
O2’s current 5G+ guidance lists the Samsung Galaxy S26 among compatible phones. The list can change, so check O2’s live compatibility information before buying a device or changing your plan. A compatible phone on its own is not enough if the plan, SIM or local coverage requirement is not met.
Does 5G+ cost extra?
O2 says 5G+ costs no extra for customers who meet its eligibility requirements. That does not mean every O2 customer automatically has access: the compatible-device, Pay Monthly plan, current SIM or eSIM, and coverage conditions still apply.

Do I need to switch from a physical SIM to an eSIM?
O2’s guidance allows either one of its latest physical SIMs or an eSIM. It does not say that all customers must convert a physical SIM to an eSIM. If you are unsure whether your SIM is eligible, check with O2 before replacing it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWill my phone work with O2 5G+?
Check the current device list on O2’s 5G+ page rather than relying on a general 5G label or an old compatibility list. O2’s February 2024 nationwide launch announcement had different, then-current requirements and named devices including the Netgear M6; that historical list does not establish current eligibility for Bristol. An existing compatible phone need not be replaced just to use 5G+.

What to check before changing your phone or plan
- Check the coverage checker: Look up the places where you expect to use the service, rather than relying only on the Bristol launch announcement.
- Check O2’s current compatible-device list: Confirm your exact phone model is listed for 5G+. Device support can change.
- Confirm your plan and SIM: Verify that you have an eligible O2 Pay Monthly plan and one of O2’s latest SIMs or an eSIM.
- Only consider buying a phone if yours is incompatible: A new compatible phone does not remove the plan, SIM and coverage requirements.
O2 lists the Samsung Galaxy S26 as a 5G+ compatible phone, but that is relevant only if your existing device is not supported. O2’s current list and coverage information should take precedence over older launch material.
Does Bristol 5G+ mean faster speeds everywhere?
No. The launch confirms that O2 5G+ has been switched on across the city and reports a potential population reach; it does not guarantee a particular speed or usable indoor signal at every address. The announcement contains no Bristol-specific measured speed or latency figure. Use O2’s coverage checker for local availability, and treat the advertised performance benefits as intended outcomes rather than a guaranteed result.
