Choose based on the kind of puzzle you enjoy: Wordle asks you to guess a five-letter word in six tries, Connections challenges you to sort words into related groups, and Strands is a themed word search. The official descriptions establish these different styles, but they do not support a reliable ranking of which game is hardest.
What’s the difference between Strands, Wordle, and Connections?
| Game | Main action | What the official description establishes | Best fit if you enjoy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wordle | Guess a word | Guess a five-letter word in six tries or fewer. | Testing candidate answers under a fixed guess limit. |
| Connections | Group words | Find four groups of four among 16 words, with each group sharing a theme. | Making associations and sorting words into categories. |
| Strands | Search a grid | Find hidden words and uncover the day’s theme; the app describes it as a classic word search with a twist. | Scanning for words organized around a theme. |
The official descriptions come from the NYT Games App Store listing for Wordle and Strands, and the NYT Connections help page for Connections. They describe distinct mechanics rather than a comparative difficulty scale.
How does each game play?
Wordle: deduction with a fixed limit
Wordle’s documented objective is specific: guess the five-letter answer in six tries or fewer. That makes it the most tightly bounded format here. The official sources cited above do not establish detailed letter-color feedback rules, so this comparison sticks to the stated objective and limit.

Connections: category-finding with deliberate ambiguity
Connections gives you 16 words and asks you to identify four sets of four that share themes. The groups are marked yellow, green, blue, and purple; NYT describes yellow as easiest and purple as trickiest. Words can seem to fit more than one category, which makes testing your theory part of the puzzle. NYT says editors curate the words and categories using the Oxford Dictionary. The puzzle has exactly one solution.

Strands: a themed word search
NYT’s app listing describes Strands as a word search in which you find hidden words and uncover the day’s theme. That high-level description makes it the clearest choice for players who like visually scanning a letter grid. The official description cited here does not establish the detailed grid, hint, or spangram rules, so those mechanics are not compared here.
Which NYT word game should you play?
- Pick Wordle if you like narrowing down candidate words while working within a known number of guesses.
- Pick Connections if you enjoy spotting relationships, proposing category groupings, and reconsidering a word that could plausibly fit more than one set.
- Pick Strands if you prefer searching a letter grid for words linked by a daily theme.
These recommendations follow from each game’s stated mechanics. They are not based on a side-by-side player test or an authoritative study of relative difficulty.
