Spoilers ahead: Connections #327, published May 3, 2024, groups its words into nightlife spots, ways to cast something off, units of length, and words that precede “sale.” The trickiest overlap is YARD: it belongs with the length measurements, not the phrase “yard sale.”
Hints for Connections #327
If you want to solve the board before seeing the answers, consider these hints in order:
- Look for places associated with nightlife.
- Find four words that can mean to cast something off.
- One group consists of measurements of length.
- For the last group, put the same word after each answer.
Connections #327 answers for May 3, 2024
Spoilers: The complete solution is below.
| Color | Category | Words |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | NIGHTSPOTS | BAR, CLUB, DISCO, LOUNGE |
| Green | CAST OFF | DITCH, DROP, LOSE, SHED |
| Blue | UNITS OF LENGTH | FATHOM, FOOT, LEAGUE, YARD |
| Purple | ___ SALE | BAKE, CLEARANCE, GARAGE, SAMPLE |
Why YARD is the main red herring
YARD can suggest “yard sale,” which makes it tempting to place with the final category. In this puzzle, however, it is the length unit, alongside FATHOM, FOOT, and LEAGUE. The purple group is built from a different pattern: each word comes before “sale”—bake sale, clearance sale, garage sale, and sample sale.

How Connections categories work
The New York Times Help Center says Connections asks players to divide 16 words into four groups of four. Groups are color-coded, with yellow intended to be easiest and purple trickiest. The words can appear to fit more than one category, but each puzzle has one intended solution. As the Help Center puts it, “Words and categories are curated by editors using the Oxford Dictionary.”
