Built In’s current directory identifies 34 media-technology companies in New York City, from advertising and streaming infrastructure to digital journalism, ticketing, education and creator tools. It is a discovery list rather than a ranking: the entries show how varied “media tech” has become and who each company primarily serves.
The directory was updated August 18, 2026. Read the full source at Built In’s “34 NYC Media Tech Companies You Should Know”. The guide below reorganizes those descriptions by customer and function; it does not independently rate the companies or guarantee that every product, office or metric remains current.
What counts as media tech in this NYC directory?
The 34 entries span legacy publishers, consumer media brands and software companies whose products help create, distribute, discover, measure or monetize media. Some sell subscriptions directly to audiences. Others provide advertising technology to publishers and brands, workflow tools to creators, marketplaces for events, or educational content for schools.
That range explains why two companies on the list can look unrelated at first glance. A streaming service and an ad-measurement platform both sit in the media technology economy, but they have different customers, revenue models and technical priorities. Built In’s shorter “Top NYC Media Companies” sidebar is not a substitute for the complete 34-entry list, and the ordering is not a ranking.

How to use the list when evaluating a company
- Start with the customer. Decide whether you want a consumer media service, creator software, publisher infrastructure, advertising technology, education product or event marketplace.
- Identify the media function. Separate creation and hosting tools from discovery, distribution, analytics and monetization. A video-hosting platform solves a different problem from a programmatic ad exchange.
- Check the delivery and revenue model. Subscription, licensing, marketplace fees, advertising and enterprise software imply different users, costs and product constraints.
- Verify current details directly. Features, audience totals, ownership, office locations and partnerships can change after the directory’s August 18, 2026 update. Treat the profiles and figures above as a starting map, not a guarantee.
Together, the entries show a New York media ecosystem that is not limited to publishers. It includes the systems that help people find events, watch and sell video, measure attention, reach audiences, teach with news and finance the production of digital stories.
