NXP announced its BMA606X ultra-wideband (UWB) wireless battery-management-system chipset on November 12, 2024, saying it was the industry’s first wireless BMS solution to use UWB. The link is designed to replace communication wiring between battery cell-management units and the battery-management unit in electric-vehicle packs—not to replace the entire BMS. NXP’s product page currently labels BMA606X “Preproduction,” so it is best treated as a development and evaluation offering, not a broadly available production part.

What NXP announced

NXP made the announcement at Electronica in Munich. It described the BMA606X as a UWB communication solution for EV battery packs and said OEM evaluation and development could begin in Q2 2025. That was an evaluation milestone, not a commitment to volume production or a vehicle launch. NXP’s announcement calls it the industry’s first wireless BMS solution with UWB capabilities.

The qualification matters: this is a wireless communication chipset for a BMS architecture, not a general-purpose consumer UWB radio or a complete battery-management system in a single package.

How the BMA606X link fits in a battery pack

A conventional BMS uses cell-management units (CMUs) to monitor groups of cells and communicate their data to a battery-management unit (BMU). That communication often travels through an isolated wired daisy-chain connection. NXP’s BMA606X is designed as a transparent wireless alternative for that communication path.

NXP says a typical pack uses one BMA6061 and multiple BMA6060 devices. See the BMA606X product page for the current family description.

Why replace communication wiring?

Wires, connectors, isolation components and harness routing take space and add assembly steps. Removing the CMU-to-BMU communication harness could simplify pack assembly, reduce connector complexity and give designers more freedom in module placement. NXP also points to possible gains in serviceability, platform reuse and usable energy density.

Those are potential pack-level benefits, not guaranteed savings from the chipset alone. The result depends on the pack’s mechanical design, manufacturing process, antenna and RF layout, safety requirements, validation work and any redundant communication paths. Wireless communication does not remove the need for cell sensing, balancing, power distribution, safety disconnects or other electrical connections.

Why use UWB inside a metal battery enclosure?

Battery packs are challenging radio environments: metal enclosures, cell cans, busbars, partitions and shielding can reflect, attenuate or disrupt radio signals. NXP argues that UWB’s high-bandwidth, pulse-based signaling is more resistant to reflections and frequency-selective fading in this environment than narrower-band approaches such as 2.4 GHz Bluetooth Low Energy links.

That is NXP’s comparative claim, not a guarantee that UWB will outperform every alternative in every pack. Actual coverage depends on pack geometry, antenna placement, shielding, interference and operating conditions. A free-space specification cannot substitute for testing in the intended production enclosure.

Published BMA606X specifications

Parameter NXP-published figure
Center frequency 7.5 or 8 GHz
Channel bandwidth 500 MHz
Data rate Up to 7.8 Mbit/s
Measurement-cycle time Down to 20 ms
Packet-error rate Below 10⁻⁶
Product status Preproduction

These are figures published on NXP’s product page. The public information does not provide enough detail to independently assess the test conditions behind them; the data rate, cycle time and packet-error figure should not be assumed to apply unchanged to every pack geometry or operating condition. NXP’s BMA606X block diagram also warns that the information concerns a preproduction product and may change.

It is one part of a broader BMS

The BMA606X handles the communication link; a production battery system still needs monitoring electronics, a controller, power supplies, software, antennas, safety mechanisms and pack-level integration. NXP positions the wireless link within its FlexCom chipset approach, which supports wired and wireless configurations using a common software architecture and safety libraries. How much can be reused depends on the selected hardware, software, safety case and vehicle program.

NXP also highlights its MC33777 battery-junction-box IC for functions including high-voltage battery voltage, current and chassis-isolation monitoring. It is complementary to the wireless link, not a replacement for it. NXP’s battery-management-system portfolio and vehicle-electrification brochure show BMA606X alongside cell controllers, processors and other components. Compatibility between specific parts should be confirmed against their current technical documentation.

How to interpret “industry’s first”

The defensible wording is that NXP says BMA606X is the industry’s first wireless BMS solution with UWB. That is narrower than claiming the first wireless BMS of any kind. The available evidence supports attributing the UWB-specific superlative to NXP; it does not establish a comprehensive audit of every earlier prototype, research system or undisclosed supplier.

Other companies describe wireless BMS approaches, but those are not automatically direct UWB equivalents. Texas Instruments’ TIDA-020076 reference design supports wired and wireless interfaces and identifies the automotive-qualified CC2662R-Q1 wireless MCU. TI’s related technical article describes that work, but neither source establishes an implementation matching NXP’s 7.5/8 GHz UWB link. Analog Devices also describes a wireless BMS solution focused on reliability and latency; its available overview does not establish that it uses UWB. These are alternatives to assess at the architecture level, not proof of equivalent radio technology.

Safety and engineering questions to settle

A radio link can be used in an automotive system, but the announcement alone is not a complete safety case for a vehicle program. Engineering teams need to account for communication loss, corrupted messages, missing nodes, interference and degraded operation, along with cybersecurity threats such as unauthorized nodes, spoofing, replay and denial of service. Portfolio-level safety language should not be read as a product-specific BMA606X qualification without supporting documentation.

Before selecting wireless over an established isolated daisy chain, teams should assess:

  • power source type:Solar Powered
  • RF coverage: Can antenna locations communicate reliably with every module in the production pack, including with its shielding and partitions?
  • Reliability and recovery: What packet-loss, latency, diagnostic and fault-recovery targets apply, and what happens if a link or node fails?
  • Safety and security: What monitoring, fault containment, fallback behavior and node-authentication measures are required?
  • EMC and power: How will the radio coexist with vehicle electronics and meet applicable requirements, and what is its effect on CMU power and standby drain?
  • Manufacturing and service: Do harness savings offset antennas, RF layout, calibration and validation, and can technicians diagnose or replace a module effectively?
  • Lifecycle and supply: Are both devices available in the needed quantities and package variants, and is their lifecycle compatible with the vehicle program?
  • Software reuse: Which parts of the wired BMS software and safety libraries can actually carry over to the wireless design?

Wired BMS remains a reasonable baseline when the pack is already validated around a daisy chain, the team wants to avoid RF qualification risk, or harness complexity is modest. TI’s and Analog Devices’ wireless offerings may suit different requirements; a reference design or portfolio description is not necessarily a drop-in, production-ready system.

Availability and how to pursue evaluation

NXP currently lists BMA606X as Preproduction. That status is more consistent with design engagement or controlled evaluation than with a generally stocked, mass-market component. The Q2 2025 evaluation timing was announced in 2024; it should not be mistaken for a production-availability date.

No public retail price was identified. NXP’s guidance on pricing and availability and sample orders explains its general purchase routes, while its sample-and-buy page directs customers to available options. For a preproduction automotive chipset, contact NXP or an authorized distributor to confirm access, samples, lifecycle, package options and technical documentation. A meaningful quote depends on quantity, geography and program requirements.
