NVIDIA’s BFGD reveal at CES 2018 introduced a proposed class of 65-inch, 4K gaming displays that paired 120Hz refresh, G-SYNC, HDR and an integrated NVIDIA SHIELD streaming platform. Acer, ASUS and HP were named as development partners. Those were company-announced specifications and plans—not independent test results or proof that every announced partner model reached stores on the same schedule.
What was NVIDIA’s BFGD?
BFGD stood for Big Format Gaming Display. NVIDIA presented it at CES in January 2018 as a way to bring high-refresh-rate PC gaming features to a screen sized for a living room, while incorporating SHIELD entertainment features. The concept was developed with Acer, ASUS and HP. NVIDIA’s GeForce News announcement and its January 7, 2018 newsroom release describe the category.
The announced display specification
NVIDIA described the first BFGDs as 65-inch displays with 4K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate, G-SYNC variable refresh, and HDR with peak brightness of 1,000 nits. The company also listed a full-array direct backlight, Quantum Dot Enhancement Film and DCI-P3 color gamut. These are NVIDIA’s announcement claims for the product class; they should not be read as independently verified measurements or as a guarantee that every partner’s eventual retail model had identical specifications.
What did “onboard SHIELD TV” mean?
SHIELD was integrated into the display rather than requiring a separate SHIELD streaming box. NVIDIA described the platform as Android TV-based and said the package would include a SHIELD remote and game controller. The company named Netflix, Amazon Video, YouTube and Hulu among the apps, and cited Google Assistant voice control. Its GeForce News article also mentioned Plex, Kodi, Android games, GameStream and GeForce NOW. Those were 2018 announcement-era service and feature claims; app access can vary by region and change over time.

The result was intended to function as both a large gaming display and an entertainment screen. SHIELD integration did not by itself establish that a BFGD was a conventional television, nor that all streaming services or functions would remain available indefinitely.
What did the CES partner announcements promise?
| Product | What its announcement or documentation said | Availability context |
|---|---|---|
| ASUS ROG Swift PG65 | ASUS announced a 65-inch 4K UHD HDR BFGD with G-SYNC, 120Hz refresh, low latency and integrated SHIELD. ASUS’s CES 2018 announcement said it would be shown at CES. | The announcement established a planned product and show-floor appearance, not retail stock or a price. |
| HP OMEN X 65 | HP announced a 65-inch 4K display with HDR10, ultra-low-latency mode, variable refresh up to 120Hz, 1,000-nit peak luminance, G-SYNC and SHIELD. HP’s CES release set out those claims. | HP planned availability for Fall 2018 and said pricing would be disclosed nearer availability. That was a historical target, not evidence of present stock. |
| HP OMEN X Emperium 65 | HP’s later datasheet lists a 64.5-inch diagonal, 3840×2160 resolution, refresh rates up to 144Hz, G-SYNC HDR, integrated SHIELD and a 120-watt OMEN X Emperium Soundbar. | The datasheet documents a specific product and its listed specifications; it does not show that the original Fall 2018 target was met or establish current availability. |
| ASUS ROG Swift PG65UQ | ASUS later described the PG65UQ as a 65-inch 4K HDR BFGD with an overclockable 144Hz refresh rate. ASUS’s product update announced its availability. | A later availability announcement is not confirmation of current inventory. |
The launch timing differed by company. NVIDIA’s January 7 announcement expected general availability “this summer,” meaning summer 2018, with pricing and further specifications to come. HP’s January 8 release instead planned Fall 2018 availability for the OMEN X 65. These were separate expectations, not one confirmed launch date.

How should you interpret the gaming claims?
G-SYNC, high refresh and HDR were central to NVIDIA’s pitch: a large screen could offer PC-oriented motion handling and variable refresh alongside a living-room form factor. But the announcement materials are company descriptions, not comparative testing. They do not provide a common set of independent input-latency or image-quality measurements for the partner models, or establish that a BFGD outperformed a particular TV or gaming monitor.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
HP’s January 8 announcement quoted OMEN Displays Product Manager Pete Ellis saying, “With the OMEN X 65 we have a display that can do both.” The preceding context defined “both” as a large 4K screen for console gaming and a variable-refresh-rate monitor for PC gaming. This was HP’s promotional characterization, not an independent evaluation. NVIDIA’s January 7 release similarly quoted GeForce marketing head Matt Wuebbling: “BFGDs change that. With NVIDIA’s latest technology built into these new displays, PC gamers can now experience their favorite titles in all the low-latency glory they deserve.” That is NVIDIA’s marketing language, not a measured latency result.

What to check when comparing a BFGD with another display
The original announcements do not provide enough comparable, independent data to name a winner. For an actual purchase decision, compare the specific model and current listing across these factors:
- Room and seating: whether a 65-inch-class panel fits the viewing distance and physical space.
- Resolution and refresh: the model’s supported resolution and refresh modes, including whether a higher rate is an overclocked mode.
- Variable refresh: the implementation and supported range for the exact model.
- HDR and backlighting: the stated HDR format and backlight design, alongside independent picture-quality measurements where available.
- Latency and connections: independent input-lag results and the ports needed by the intended PC or console.
- Integrated features: SHIELD functions, included remote or controller, streaming-app availability in your region, and audio equipment.
- Ownership details: warranty terms, current price, condition and whether the seller has the model in stock.
Do not treat a historical announcement or specification sheet as proof of present-day service support, pricing or inventory.
