Have I Been Pwned’s breach data listed 71,335 email addresses connected to the 2022 NVIDIA breach. That is not a confirmed count of current NVIDIA employees: the company did not publish an affected-person total. NVIDIA did confirm that employee credentials and proprietary company information were stolen and leaked online.
Were 71,000 NVIDIA employees hacked?
Not according to a confirmed NVIDIA headcount. The figure comes from Have I Been Pwned’s breach data, which recorded 71,335 email addresses, as reported by Recorded Future. An email-address count does not establish how many distinct people were affected or whether every address belonged to a current employee.
In later reporting, NVIDIA declined to say how many employees or customers were affected, according to TechCrunch. The careful description is therefore “71,335 email addresses listed in breach data,” not “NVIDIA confirmed 71,000 employees were hacked.”

When did the NVIDIA cyberattack happen?
NVIDIA said it became aware of a malicious intrusion on February 23, 2022. On February 25, the company said it was investigating a cybersecurity incident and that its business and commercial activities continued uninterrupted. On March 1, NVIDIA confirmed that employee credentials and proprietary company information had been stolen and were being leaked online. It said it had notified law enforcement and engaged cybersecurity experts.

- Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
Those details and contemporaneous statements are reported by TechCrunch’s March 1 coverage and its February 25 report. The group Lapsus$ claimed responsibility in contemporaneous reporting; the group’s claims about what it took were not the same as facts NVIDIA confirmed. NVIDIA did not name the attacker or explain the initial access method in the cited public coverage.
What information was leaked?
NVIDIA confirmed that employee credentials and proprietary company information were taken and leaked, but its public statement did not provide a complete inventory. The breach record and security analysis identify email addresses and NTLM password hashes. Recorded Future also reported that the leak included two NVIDIA code-signing certificates and that researchers observed malware signed with them.

A code-signing certificate can be used to sign software so a device or security tool can recognize its publisher or verify integrity. If a certificate is stolen, an attacker may misuse it to make malicious software appear signed by a trusted publisher. That is a risk involving the stolen signing credentials; it does not mean NVIDIA graphics cards themselves were compromised. See Recorded Future’s analysis for its account of the leaked material.
Were NVIDIA employee passwords exposed?
The breach data included NTLM password hashes, rather than a report that every employee’s password was available in plain text. A hash is a transformed representation used in authentication systems. Depending on its strength and the password chosen, an attacker may be able to guess the underlying password from a stolen hash. The cited public reporting does not establish which individual passwords, if any, were recovered or reused.

- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4. System Requirements: Minimum 850W PSU with 16-pin 12V-2x6 (12VHPWR) connector required. Verify before purchasing.
- Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability. Compatibility: 348mm (13.7") length, 3.6 slots, 4.3 lbs. Confirm case clearance and slot spacing. GPU bracket included.
- Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
- 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
NVIDIA’s statement confirmed stolen employee credentials broadly, but did not detail the credential contents person by person. The breach entry’s identification of NTLM hashes is reported by Recorded Future and reflected in Have I Been Pwned’s breach data.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you do if your password was in a data breach?
This 2022 incident does not by itself show that your personal account is currently at risk. If you have evidence that a password was exposed—or if you used the same password elsewhere—change it on every account where it was used. Make each password unique, and enable multifactor authentication (MFA) on important accounts.

- Replace exposed or reused passwords. NIST advises changing a memorized secret when there is evidence it has been compromised. Distinct passwords also limit password-stuffing attacks, in which criminals try credentials from one breach on other services. See the NIST Digital Identity Guidelines FAQ.
- Use a password manager. CISA recommends password managers to help generate and manage unique passwords. When choosing one, consider the devices and services you use, how account recovery works, whether MFA is available, and whether you prefer local or cloud storage. CISA discusses these considerations in its #StopRansomware Guide.
- Turn on MFA for important accounts. CISA recommends phishing-resistant MFA for important organizational services. A cryptographic security key is one possible method, but a service and device must support the particular method; no single option works everywhere. An authenticator app or one-time code is a different MFA method and is not equivalent to a cryptographic key.
If you manage a work account, follow your organization’s security process for exposed credentials rather than relying only on a personal password change. CISA’s guidance covers MFA and credential practices in its ransomware guidance.
