A planned collaboration between NVIDIA and YTL Power International Berhad to build AI infrastructure in Johor helped send YTL Power to a record closing price in December 2023. The project combined NVIDIA H100 GPUs and AI Enterprise software with YTL Power’s solar-powered Green Data Centre Park, while highlighting Malaysia’s rapidly growing data-centre electricity market.

What was the NVIDIA–YTL Power deal?

On 8 December 2023, YTL Power confirmed a collaboration with NVIDIA to build AI infrastructure in Malaysia. The first phase was expected to begin operations by mid-2024, although the announcement did not establish that the date was ultimately achieved.

  • Location: YTL Power’s 500 MW solar-powered Green Data Centre Park in Johor.
  • Owner and operator: YTL Communications, a 60%-owned subsidiary of YTL Power.
  • Technology: NVIDIA H100 Tensor Core GPUs and NVIDIA AI Enterprise software.
  • Planned services: AI computing for scientists, developers and start-ups.

The arrangement paired NVIDIA’s accelerated-computing stack with YTL’s data-centre and energy platform. YTL also said it planned to use NVIDIA NeMo to customise and deploy a Malay-language foundation model designed to reflect Malaysia’s multicultural heritage.

Why did YTL Power shares hit a record high?

Investors treated the announcement as evidence that YTL Power could capture growth in high-value AI infrastructure as well as conventional utility operations. YTL Power rose as much as 7.49% intraday and closed at RM2.42, up 15 sen, or 6.61%—a record closing price reported by The Edge on 8 December 2023. YTL Corp, which controlled 55.57% of YTL Power, also reached an all-time high of RM1.69.

The share-price reaction reflected expectations, not a disclosed measure of completed revenue or profit. The announcement described a planned first phase and did not provide a full project financial model, customer list or final operating results.

How large is the project?

Malaysia’s Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz later described the strategic partnership as a RM10 billion investment. His description included AI data centres, NVIDIA GPUs, green-energy infrastructure and Malaysia’s sovereign large language model.

That RM10 billion figure is a government description of the broader strategic project. It should not be read as a separately disclosed purchase price for GPUs or as YTL Power’s standalone capital spending unless the companies provide that breakdown.

What makes the AI infrastructure strategically important?

Domestic computing capacity

Access to H100-based systems can provide the specialised compute needed to train and run large AI models without relying entirely on overseas facilities. NVIDIA AI Enterprise adds software intended for developing and operating enterprise AI workloads.

A Malay-language foundation model

YTL’s stated plan for a Malay-language model addresses a gap left by systems trained primarily on English and other high-resource languages. Cultural and linguistic sensitivity, however, depends on the eventual training data, evaluation and governance—not merely on the choice of GPU.

Lower-carbon positioning

YTL managing director Datuk Yeoh Seok Hong said the company’s green data centres and low-energy solutions were an ideal fit for NVIDIA’s high-performance supercomputers. The Johor park’s planned 500 MW solar-powered platform gives the project a renewable-energy narrative, while actual emissions also depend on grid use, storage, backup generation, cooling and utilisation.

Why Malaysian utilities are watching data centres

Data centres are becoming a major source of new electricity demand in Peninsular Malaysia. Kenanga Research reported that total electricity demand rose 6.2% year on year in 2024, while the data-centre-led commercial segment grew 9.2%.

Measure Reported figure What it indicates
Operating data-centre load, end-2024 405 MW Actual connected demand at that point
Operating data-centre load, March 2025 485 MW Growth in connected demand within months
Projects represented in that assessment 21 projects, 2.8 GW total Installed and contracted project base cited by Kenanga Research
Pipeline 43 projects, 6.4 GW maximum demand Projects under construction or with signed energy-supply agreements
TNB supply through Q1 2026 36 operating centres, about 4.5 GW planned supply capacity Scale of the facilities TNB was supplying or preparing to supply
Centres under construction served by TNB 23 centres, 3.8 GW maximum demand Near-term additional load identified by PETRA
Data-centre share of national electricity demand in 2035 Up to 31%, or 73,274 GWh PETRA projection, compared with 7% in 2026

The figures come from different reporting dates and definitions, so they are not additive. “Maximum demand,” planned supply capacity and actual load describe different stages of a project’s connection and operation.

Will Malaysian utilities benefit from this demand?

Utilities can benefit through new electricity sales, grid connections and infrastructure investment, but the opportunity is not risk-free.

Potential benefits

  • Large, concentrated customers can support long-term electricity demand and network utilisation.
  • Data-centre developments require substations, transmission capacity and dependable connections.
  • Renewable-energy contracts and efficient cooling can help operators meet corporate emissions targets.
  • Projects create demand for engineering, operations and specialist digital infrastructure.

Constraints and risks

  • Connection queues and transmission upgrades can delay facilities.
  • AI workloads can produce very high, rapidly changing power requirements.
  • Renewable supply may need storage, firming power or grid purchases when solar output is unavailable.
  • Electricity tariffs, water availability, land-use rules and sustainability requirements affect project economics.
  • Pipeline capacity is not the same as commissioned load; projects can be delayed, resized or cancelled.

How to assess the NVIDIA–YTL model

Assessment axis What this project shows Question for investors and customers
Technology stack H100 GPUs with NVIDIA AI Enterprise and planned NeMo use Are the systems contracted, deployed and sufficiently utilised?
Power and efficiency Johor site designed around a 500 MW solar-powered park How much energy is renewable, firmed or grid-supplied in practice?
Scale and timing First phase was expected by mid-2024; broader investment later described at RM10 billion Which portions are operating, under construction or still planned?
Ownership model YTL Communications, 60%-owned by YTL Power, was to own and manage the facility How are capital costs, revenue and execution risk allocated within the group?
Utility exposure Part of a national data-centre build-out supplied by TNB Can the grid deliver reliable capacity without excessive upgrade costs?

What the announcement does—and does not—prove

  • It establishes a strategic NVIDIA–YTL Power collaboration centred on AI infrastructure in Johor.
  • It explains why the market reassessed YTL Power’s growth prospects in December 2023.
  • It shows Malaysia’s ambition to combine AI computing, renewable-energy infrastructure and a sovereign language model.
  • It does not by itself prove that every planned megawatt, GPU deployment or RM10 billion component had been completed.
  • It does not guarantee that all Malaysian utilities will earn equal returns from the data-centre expansion.

How much electricity could Malaysian data centres use by 2035?

PETRA projected that data centres could account for up to 31% of Malaysia’s electricity demand, equivalent to 73,274 GWh, in 2035.

The Bottom Line

The NVIDIA tie-up gave YTL Power a credible route into Malaysia’s AI-infrastructure boom and helped drive its December 2023 record close. The larger investment case depends on execution: commissioning the Johor capacity, securing reliable low-carbon power and converting Malaysia’s expanding data-centre pipeline into actual, paying load.
