NVIDIA’s SHIELD TV Pro now costs about $300 in the U.S., and October 2, 2026 reporting says the standard SHIELD TV has been discontinued. NVIDIA attributed the Pro’s price increase to higher component costs, including memory, but its public explanation did not quantify DRAM costs separately. The Pro is still a niche option: its USB ports, storage expansion, audio passthrough and Plex support may matter to home-theater users, while the new price is difficult to justify for basic streaming alone.
What changed, and how much does SHIELD TV Pro cost now?
Effective October 2, 2026, NVIDIA’s spokesperson told Ars Technica that the SHIELD Pro would be priced at $299. Ars reported the U.S. retail/listing price as $299.99. The two figures describe the quoted price and reported listing figure, respectively.
NVIDIA launched the 2019 SHIELD TV Pro at $199, while Ars compares the new listing price with the former $199.99 price. On that basis, the increase is $100 nominally, or roughly 50%—a comparison of U.S. list prices from different years, not an inflation-adjusted calculation. NVIDIA’s standard SHIELD TV launched at $149 in 2019. NVIDIA’s 2019 launch announcement gives the original prices and model details.

Why did NVIDIA raise the SHIELD TV Pro price?
Ars Technica quoted an NVIDIA spokesperson: “Starting October 2, SHIELD Pro will be priced at $299. The cost of components, including memory, has increased substantially across the industry.” The company’s explanation is a broad increase in component costs. The statement mentions memory but does not identify DRAM as the sole cause or provide a separate memory-cost figure. Ars’s October 2 report contains the quoted statement and price reporting.
NVIDIA’s 2019 launch remarks described the models as a major step forward and highlighted Dolby Atmos, Dolby Vision and AI-enhanced video playback. Those were launch-era promotional claims, not an independent assessment of how the device compares with current streamers.

Is the standard NVIDIA SHIELD TV discontinued?
October 2 coverage reported that the standard, non-Pro SHIELD TV had been discontinued or that its production had ended. That is different from NVIDIA’s earlier statement in July: the company then said the base model was “largely out of stock due to demand” and that it had no update on future availability. That July comment was not an announcement that the model had been discontinued. Android Authority’s July 11 report quotes NVIDIA’s earlier wording; 9to5Google’s October 2 coverage corroborates the later lineup change.

NVIDIA’s specification page lists hardware and supported formats that can suit a particular home-theater setup. These are vendor-listed features, not results from a new comparative test, and format compatibility can depend on the app, connected equipment and configuration. NVIDIA’s SHIELD TV Pro specifications describe the following:
Rank #3
- Works with SHIELD TV 2015/2017/2019 models. Requires upgrade to the latest SHIELD Experience.
- Easy to use in the most darkly lit room. Pick up the remote and the buttons will instantly light up.
- Press the microphone button to access the powerful Google Assistant on your Android TV. Search for new movies, TV shows, or YouTube videos, look up stock prices, or check your commute time, all on your SHIELD TV.
- Customize your menu button with more than 25 choices. Launch your favorite app, enable AI upscaling, or mute your sound, or more! Different options can be applied to up to 3 actions: single press, double press, long press.

USB flash drives or hard drives can expand storage; some of the 16 GB is occupied by the system.
- Video: Dolby Vision HDR and HDR10, plus AI-enhanced upscaling up to 4K at 60 frames per second. Listed video formats include H.265/HEVC, VP8, VP9, H.264, MPEG1/2 and older formats.
- Audio: Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital and Digital Plus, with DTS:X, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD passthrough listed. NVIDIA also lists high-resolution audio playback up to 24-bit/192 kHz over HDMI and USB.
- Software and media use: Android 11 powered by Android TV, Chromecast 4K built in, NVIDIA SHIELD Experience software upgrades, and Plex among the listed apps. NVIDIA’s 2019 launch announcement specifically described using the Pro’s USB ports to run Plex Media Server and connect high-capacity drives or other USB devices.
Is SHIELD TV Pro worth $300?
At roughly $300, a purchase makes the most sense when the Pro addresses a specific requirement in an existing setup—not simply because it plays mainstream streaming apps. Its USB ports, expandable storage, listed audio passthrough and Plex server use give it a clearer role for some home-theater and media-library users than for someone seeking a basic streaming box.
Before choosing it, check whether your setup can use the features that distinguish it:
Rank #4
- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
- Do your media files and chosen apps need formats listed by NVIDIA?
- Can your receiver or soundbar use the audio passthrough formats you want?
- Will you use wired Gigabit Ethernet, USB storage or a Plex Media Server?
- Is the product available from a seller in your region with acceptable warranty and return terms?
- Would a streamer focused on common apps meet your needs without paying for these connections and media features?
Compare alternatives against those requirements, their actual local prices and seller terms, and any clearly stated software-support commitments. The available coverage does not establish a comparative test ranking against competing devices, so those checks are more useful than assuming that the SHIELD is either the best choice or obsolete for every buyer.
What is known about SHIELD software support?
In July 2026, NVIDIA said the SHIELD platform continued to receive updates “for more than 10 years.” This was the company’s statement at that time, as quoted by Android Authority; it is not a newly verified October commitment or a promise of a specific future update schedule. The SHIELD TV Pro specifications page also identifies Android 11 powered by Android TV and NVIDIA SHIELD Experience software upgrades.
