If an NVIDIA driver will not install on Windows 11, first note the exact installer message, your GPU model, and whether the problem began after a driver or Windows update. Then use the least disruptive route that fits the evidence: verify the package, try Windows’ update tools, or roll back a recent change. These steps are troubleshooting options, not guaranteed fixes; the right one depends on the device and error.
Before you try a fix, identify the GPU and Windows build
A driver package must match the graphics product and Windows version. On a laptop, check the computer maker’s support page first: its graphics package may be customized for that model. Record the NVIDIA model, the Windows version, the full installer message, and any Device Manager error code. That information helps distinguish a mismatched download from a post-update problem or a Windows upgrade safeguard.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters and note the NVIDIA device name. If the device is not listed as expected, do not guess at a package; check the PC maker’s support page or the exact device details first.
- Check the Windows version by opening Settings > System > About. Note the Windows edition and version.
- If installation failed, capture the exact wording or error code before changing drivers. In Device Manager, open the adapter’s Properties and review its status on the General tab.
Choose a route based on what failed
| Situation | First route to try | Why |
|---|---|---|
| New driver download or installer reports an incompatibility | Verify the model and Windows version, then use the official NVIDIA selector or the PC maker’s support page. | A package for a different product or Windows version is not applicable. |
| NVIDIA’s installer fails, but Windows still runs | Try Windows Update or Device Manager’s automatic search. | Windows may offer a compatible package through its supported update route. |
| The installer is unavailable or you need to apply a downloaded package manually | Use Device Manager’s Browse my computer for drivers option. | This applies a manufacturer-provided driver folder without relying on the installer interface. |
| The issue appeared after a driver or Windows update | Check the Device Manager error; consider Roll Back Driver if the timing points to a recent driver change. | A rollback is relevant to a regression, not a general first step. |
| Windows 11 version 24H2 will not upgrade on a device with a covered NVIDIA adapter | Check Microsoft’s version-specific safeguard guidance and follow its recommended driver and upgrade route. | A compatibility hold can block an OS upgrade even when the issue is not a general driver-install failure. |
Fix 1: Download the driver that matches your device
Use NVIDIA’s official driver selector and match the product, series, operating system, and driver type. If you are unsure which product to choose, use the name shown under Device Manager > Display adapters. For a laptop, compare the NVIDIA listing with the PC maker’s support page for your exact model; use the maker’s package if its instructions call for it.

Fix 2: Let Windows search for an offered driver
Windows Update is Microsoft’s normal driver-update route. Use it if the NVIDIA installer fails or you want Windows to look for an offered compatible package.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Review any driver updates offered there.
- If you want Device Manager to search directly, right-click Start, open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, right-click the NVIDIA adapter, and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers. Follow any prompts, then restart if Windows requests it.
Windows may not offer a newer driver even if one exists on the manufacturer’s site. If automatic search finds nothing, use the appropriate official manual route rather than repeatedly running the same search.

Fix 3: Apply the downloaded package through Device Manager
If you already have the correct manufacturer driver but its installer will not complete, Microsoft documents a manual Device Manager method. Extract the downloaded package first if it is compressed; the folder you select must contain the driver files.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, right-click the NVIDIA device, and choose Update driver.
- Select Browse my computer for drivers, then browse to the extracted driver folder.
- Choose Next and let Windows check the folder. Windows installs the driver if it finds an applicable newer one.
If Windows says no applicable driver was found, recheck that the folder is the extracted package for this GPU and Windows version. Do not force a driver from an unrelated model.

Fix 4: Uninstall the display adapter and restart
Use this recovery route when the installed adapter driver appears damaged or the normal update path does not resolve the issue. Microsoft says Windows attempts to reinstall a device driver after you uninstall the device and restart; that does not guarantee NVIDIA’s installer will then work.
- In Device Manager > Display adapters, right-click the NVIDIA adapter and choose Uninstall device.
- Confirm the removal. If Windows offers a checkbox to remove the driver package, do not select it unless you intend to remove that package and already have the correct replacement available.
- Restart Windows. Check Device Manager after startup to see whether Windows restored a driver.
- If it did not, use the automatic search or manual folder-install method above.
Fix 5: Roll back a driver after a recent update
If the installation or display problem started immediately after a driver change, check whether Windows offers a rollback. Microsoft Support says that when an issue occurs after Windows Update, “reinstalling the previous driver often resolves it.” The option may be unavailable if Windows has no previous driver to restore, and administrator permissions are required.

- Follow the prompts and restart if asked. If rollback is unavailable, use the appropriate manufacturer or Windows update route instead.
Fix 6: Match the action to the Device Manager error code
Do not treat every error as a generic NVIDIA installer failure. In Device Manager, open the adapter’s Properties and read the status message on the General tab. Microsoft’s error-code guidance assigns different causes and actions to different codes. For example, Code 38 means a previous driver instance is still in memory; Microsoft recommends restarting the computer. Other codes may call for reinstalling the driver. Follow the action for the code shown rather than applying a fix for a different code.
See Microsoft’s Device Manager error-code list for the explanation and resolution associated with your exact code.

Fix 7: Check for the Windows 11 24H2 NVIDIA safeguard
A Windows feature-update hold is different from a failed graphics-driver installation. Microsoft’s October 2024 guidance describes safeguard holds affecting some NVIDIA display-adapter driver versions because of compatibility issues that could cause display loss after upgrading to Windows 11, version 24H2. This guidance is specific to covered devices and versions; it does not mean every NVIDIA installation failure is caused by 24H2.
If Windows does not offer 24H2 and your device may be affected, use Microsoft’s 24H2 guidance to identify the recommended driver and update route. Microsoft cautions against forcing the upgrade with Update now or the Media Creation Tool before the driver is updated and Windows offers the upgrade. Safeguard status and update availability can change, so check Microsoft’s current instructions.
Optional NVIDIA installer checks
NVIDIA’s undated Driver Installation Hints advise disabling download-accelerator utilities while downloading drivers. NVIDIA also advises not running antivirus software in the background during installation. Treat the latter as a temporary troubleshooting suggestion, not a general security recommendation: only consider it if you are comfortable doing so, restore your usual protection immediately afterward, and do not leave protection disabled. The page does not provide test details for these suggestions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen to stop retrying the same installer
If the correct official package still fails, keep the error message and Device Manager code, and note the GPU model, Windows version, and whether the failure followed an update. Use those details to choose between the PC maker’s package, a Windows update route, or the error-specific resolution. Repeatedly reinstalling an unchanged package will not address a version safeguard or a mismatch.
