NVIDIA became the first publicly traded company to cross a $4 trillion market valuation on July 9, 2025. The crossing was intraday: the share price later fell enough for the company to slip back below that level before the market closed, AP reported. The milestone reflected investors’ confidence that NVIDIA’s processors would remain central to the expanding AI data-center buildout—not a guarantee that the valuation would hold or that future growth was assured.

Why investors valued NVIDIA so highly

A company’s market capitalization is the market value of its outstanding shares, not the amount of cash it has or the revenue it earns. It changes as the share price and share count change. A $4 trillion market cap therefore expressed what investors were collectively willing to pay for NVIDIA’s equity at that moment.

Reuters tied the milestone to expectations that NVIDIA’s high-performance processors would continue to underpin AI infrastructure. The company sells the compute hardware used to develop and run AI systems, and customers’ spending on data centers helped turn expectations about AI adoption into unusually strong reported sales. Reuters described NVIDIA’s chips as “the backbone of this technological advance.”

The market’s bet rested on more than a single product or quarter. Investors were weighing current operating results, the prospect of continued demand for AI training and inference, and NVIDIA’s ability to keep its position as data-center customers build out computing capacity. A high valuation also leaves less room for disappointment: slower AI investment, stronger competition, or constraints on sales can change the outlook even when a company remains profitable.

What NVIDIA’s reported results show

NVIDIA reported fiscal-2026 revenue of $215.9 billion, up 65% year over year. In the fourth quarter of that fiscal year, revenue was $68.1 billion, including $62.3 billion from Data Center. Those company-reported figures show how heavily recent revenue was concentrated in data-center demand; they do not establish how much came specifically from training versus inference.

For fiscal 2026, NVIDIA reported a GAAP gross margin of 71.1% and GAAP diluted earnings per share of $4.90. These figures indicate substantial profitability alongside rapid sales growth. They are historical results for the company’s fiscal year, not a forecast or a measure of what investors will earn from buying its shares.

NVIDIA described the demand behind its results this way: “Our customers are racing to invest in AI compute — the factories powering the AI industrial revolution and their future growth.” The statement captures the opportunity, but customer investment is not assured to continue at the same pace. Revenue growth depends on customers placing and fulfilling orders, and on NVIDIA maintaining its ability to supply products that meet their needs.

How the AI data-center story connects to GPUs people recognize

NVIDIA’s business includes both data-center computing and graphics products. Its SEC filing identifies GeForce GPUs and NVIDIA RTX GPUs in its graphics business. That gives the company’s AI-compute story a familiar hardware connection, but consumer graphics cards and data-center systems are not interchangeable products: they serve different workloads and buyers.

  • Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads

For someone considering an NVIDIA GeForce RTX graphics card, the $4 trillion milestone is not a buying recommendation. It says something about the market’s expectations for NVIDIA as a company, not whether a particular card is the right fit for a PC. Choose hardware based on the games or applications you use, the performance you need, system compatibility, and the card’s price and availability in your region.

What could weaken the growth case

The company’s own disclosures show that strong demand does not remove execution or regulatory risks. NVIDIA disclosed a $4.5 billion charge in 2025 related to H20 inventory and purchase obligations after U.S. export-license requirements affected demand in China. That episode illustrates how export controls can disrupt sales plans and leave costs behind; it does not, by itself, predict the size or direction of future results.

Other questions investors must keep assessing include whether customers’ AI capital spending can continue to support data-center growth, whether competing accelerators can win workloads, and whether NVIDIA can sustain its margins while meeting demand. The company’s reported Data Center revenue shows that this business was the dominant source of its fiscal-2026 fourth-quarter sales, but the figures provided here do not quantify customer concentration or forecast future spending.

NVIDIA’s software and platform ecosystem is another part of the competitive picture. Software can make an accelerator platform more useful to developers and customers, while alternatives from competitors can provide pressure to switch or diversify. The milestone alone does not measure how durable that advantage is, and the reported financial figures do not establish how much of NVIDIA’s growth came from software rather than hardware.

How to read the $4 trillion milestone

  • It marked investor expectations. Market capitalization reflects the share price and share count at a point in time; it is not revenue, profit, or cash on hand.
  • Operating performance supported the story. NVIDIA’s fiscal-2026 results showed rapid company-reported revenue growth and high reported profitability.
  • The growth thesis carries risks. Export rules have already affected a product line, and future results depend in part on continued customer investment and NVIDIA’s competitive position.
