Yes—NVIDIA App is now the supported replacement for GeForce Experience on Windows. It also contains the actively supported GeForce features that used to live in NVIDIA Control Panel. GeForce Experience may still install in a limited legacy state, but NVIDIA no longer supports it and warns that critical GeForce Experience servers will be shut down in the near future. NVIDIA has not published an exact shutdown date.

The transition is complete enough that most GeForce users should move to NVIDIA App if they want current overlay, recording, driver, optimization, display, and RTX features. However, the app is not mandatory for installing an NVIDIA driver: NVIDIA still offers a standalone driver installer. It also is not a perfect one-for-one replacement—direct Twitch, YouTube, and Facebook broadcasting was removed, while several professional workstation controls remain separate or still depend on the legacy Control Panel.

Updated for NVIDIA App 11.0.8 and NVIDIA’s GeForce software changes announced through August 2026.

The short version

  • GeForce Experience: replaced as NVIDIA’s supported consumer companion app. It may still work, but NVIDIA says it is no longer supported and is warning users about an upcoming server shutdown.
  • NVIDIA Control Panel: its actively supported GeForce features have been moved into NVIDIA App. The classic Control Panel is being retired from GeForce Game Ready and Studio drivers, although existing installations may remain and professional RTX PRO users may still need it.
  • NVIDIA App: the forward-looking Windows hub for drivers, game profiles, ShadowPlay, the overlay, performance statistics, display controls, RTX features, and some NVIDIA software downloads.
  • Driver installation: NVIDIA App remains optional in current GeForce driver installers. You can install only the driver if you want a minimal setup.

So the practical answer is not that NVIDIA suddenly forces every GPU owner to install an app. The better description is that NVIDIA App is optional for the driver, but increasingly necessary for NVIDIA’s new software features and ongoing support.

What NVIDIA App replaces

NVIDIA App was designed to consolidate three previously separate NVIDIA experiences:

  1. GeForce Experience handled driver notifications and downloads, game optimization, ShadowPlay recording, screenshots, Highlights, Photo Mode, and the older in-game overlay.
  2. NVIDIA Control Panel handled driver-level 3D settings, display configuration, G-SYNC, scaling, color controls, custom resolutions, Surround, and related system settings.
  3. RTX Experience was NVIDIA’s newer software direction for RTX users and RTX-specific tools.

NVIDIA released the public beta on February 22, 2024, describing it as a unified home for GeForce Experience, Control Panel, and RTX Experience. The app officially left beta on November 12, 2024, when NVIDIA said the migration of GeForce Experience and RTX Experience features was complete.

That migration happened in stages. NVIDIA added features such as AV1 capture, automatic GPU tuning, more Control Panel settings, DLSS overrides, Surround support, and additional display controls over subsequent releases. By 2026, the app was no longer just a redesigned GeForce Experience interface; it had become NVIDIA’s main GeForce configuration client.

NVIDIA’s transition timeline

Date What happened Why it matters
February 22, 2024 NVIDIA released the public NVIDIA App beta. The replacement project became available to ordinary users.
June 4, 2024 A beta update added AV1 capture at up to 120 FPS and automatic GPU performance tuning. The app was gaining capabilities rather than merely changing the interface.
November 12, 2024 NVIDIA App 1.0 officially exited beta. GeForce Experience became a legacy product and NVIDIA App became its supported successor.
August 19, 2025 NVIDIA added global DLSS overrides, RTX 40 support for Smooth Motion, more Control Panel settings, Surround improvements, and broader Project G-Assist support. More driver and RTX functionality moved into the app.
May 26, 2026 NVIDIA announced the retirement of the classic Control Panel from GeForce Game Ready and Studio drivers. The unified-app transition became substantially more complete for consumer GeForce users.
July 2026 NVIDIA App 11.0.8 added ShadowPlay recording at up to 240 FPS for RTX 40- and RTX 50-series GPUs, along with additional multi-display controls. The current app is considerably more capable than the 2024 launch version.
August 10, 2026 NVIDIA’s release-highlights page listed version 11.0.8 as the newest release shown there. NVIDIA App should now be treated as released software, not beta software.

What NVIDIA App actually does

Drivers and game profiles

The app can download and install NVIDIA Game Ready and Studio drivers. It also provides per-game and global graphics settings under Graphics > Program Settings.

If Windows is also reporting missing or outdated hardware drivers, Outbyte Driver Updater is an optional way to check for broader driver issues before you continue with NVIDIA’s official installation.

For supported games, you can view NVIDIA’s Optimal Playable Settings and apply them automatically or adjust individual options yourself. NVIDIA’s current FAQ describes optimization support for more than 1,000 games. Older 2024 launch material used a higher figure, so claims about a precise title count should be treated as version-dependent.

Program Settings can also expose driver-level options and DLSS Override controls for compatible games and RTX hardware. Do not assume that every game or every GPU will show the same options: availability depends on the game, driver, GPU generation, and the particular feature.

ShadowPlay and the in-game overlay

NVIDIA App retains the main ShadowPlay functions that GeForce Experience users expect:

  • Manual gameplay recording.
  • Instant Replay.
  • Screenshots.
  • Game Highlights where supported.
  • Photo Mode.
  • An in-game Gallery.
  • Microphone and audio capture controls.
  • Video codec, bitrate, resolution, frame-rate, and recording-location controls.

Press Alt+Z to open the NVIDIA overlay. Alt+R toggles the statistics overlay when that feature is enabled. The exact overlay layout and available controls can change between releases, so instructions or screenshots from the 2024 beta may not match version 11.0.8.

Performance monitoring and tuning

NVIDIA App includes a customizable statistics overlay and automatic GPU performance tuning. The tuning feature is intended to find a stable performance profile automatically, but it should not be treated as a guarantee that every GPU will overclock safely or deliver the same result. Temperature, power limits, silicon quality, cooling, and the game workload all affect the outcome.

Users who need a more detailed on-screen display or manual tuning can still use third-party tools such as RTSS or MSI Afterburner. Those tools are alternatives, not identical replacements, and their compatibility and behavior can vary by game and driver.

Display and driver controls

NVIDIA has been moving GeForce-side Control Panel functions into the app. Depending on the version and hardware, look under System > Display or System > Displays for controls such as:

  • Resolution and refresh rate.
  • G-SYNC.
  • Display scaling.
  • Integer scaling.
  • GPU scaling versus display scaling.
  • Display color settings.
  • Custom resolutions.
  • Surround and multi-monitor configuration.
  • Some Advanced Optimus controls on supported laptops.

NVIDIA says Graphics > Program Settings is the replacement for the old Control Panel’s Manage 3D Settings screen. System-level display and related controls are found under the System tab.

There is an important qualification: NVIDIA’s May 26, 2026 announcement says actively supported GeForce Control Panel features have been modernized and moved into NVIDIA App, not that every NVIDIA Control Panel function for every product category has disappeared. NVIDIA RTX PRO workstation users may still need the classic Control Panel for professional features such as Mosaic and Quadro Sync II while those functions are migrated.

RTX features

On compatible hardware, NVIDIA App provides access to several RTX-focused features, including:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • RTX HDR for converting supported SDR games to HDR.
  • RTX Video Super Resolution and related video enhancements.
  • RTX Dynamic Vibrance.
  • DLSS overrides for supported games.
  • Smooth Motion on supported GPU generations and software versions.
  • Additional AI-enhanced filters and tools as NVIDIA adds them.

These are not universal features for every NVIDIA card. The app can run on selected older GeForce GTX and MX families, but many RTX features require an RTX 20-series or newer GPU, a suitable driver, a compatible operating system, and a supported game or application.

A discovery hub, not one giant NVIDIA application

NVIDIA App brings several NVIDIA products together in one place, but it does not absorb all of them into a single process. GeForce NOW, NVIDIA Broadcast, ChatRTX, FrameView, RTX Remix, and Project G-Assist remain separate applications or services that NVIDIA App can help you discover and install.

Project G-Assist is particularly important to classify correctly. It is an optional NVIDIA App download and a local AI assistant for adjusting selected game and system settings, optimizing performance and power efficiency, providing diagnostics, charting performance data, and controlling some peripherals. NVIDIA’s current G-Assist information describes support across RTX 20-, 30-, 40-, and 50-series systems with at least 6 GB of VRAM, subject to the feature’s software requirements. It is not required for ordinary NVIDIA App use.

What was removed from GeForce Experience

NVIDIA App is not a feature-for-feature clone of GeForce Experience. NVIDIA deliberately removed several older functions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Direct broadcasting to Twitch and YouTube.
  • Direct sharing of images and videos to Facebook and YouTube.
  • 360-degree and stereo Photo Mode captures.

NVIDIA said the removals were intended to reduce installation size, installation time, and interface complexity where other tools already existed. The practical consequence is that users who relied on GeForce Experience for direct livestreaming need a different workflow.

For streaming, use OBS Studio or another streaming application. NVIDIA Broadcast remains a separate NVIDIA application for supported microphone, camera, and background effects. NVIDIA App may help you find and install it, but it does not replace the full Broadcast application.

Do not expect NVIDIA App to broadcast directly to Twitch or YouTube just because it still records locally. Local ShadowPlay recording and platform livestreaming are different features.

Do you need an NVIDIA account?

No, not for the core functions. NVIDIA says you can generally install the app, download drivers, configure graphics settings, optimize games, use the overlay, and record gameplay without signing in.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sign-in is needed for account-linked features such as claiming GeForce Rewards, GPU bundles, and promotional content. This is a meaningful change for users who disliked GeForce Experience’s account requirement for ordinary use.

Optional sign-in does not mean the app collects no data. NVIDIA App exposes separate settings for configuration, performance, usage, error, and crash data. The defensible privacy conclusion is that login is optional for core functions and data-sharing controls are available in Settings; it would be inaccurate to promise zero telemetry or zero data collection.

Is NVIDIA App mandatory?

There are three different questions hidden in that word:

  1. Is it required to install the NVIDIA graphics driver? No. Current GeForce driver pages still describe NVIDIA App as an optional additional installation. Choose the driver-only path if you want only the display driver.
  2. Is it required to receive NVIDIA’s newest companion-app features? Increasingly, yes. New overlay, RTX, display, tuning, and DLSS-related features are being developed for NVIDIA App rather than GeForce Experience or the classic Control Panel.
  3. Is GeForce Experience a sensible long-term alternative? No. It may still install and launch, but NVIDIA no longer supports it and warns that critical web servers will be shut down in the near future.

That makes NVIDIA App optional in a technical sense but the clear recommended path for users who want NVIDIA’s current software ecosystem.

System requirements and GPU compatibility

NVIDIA’s current consumer FAQ lists these NVIDIA App requirements:

Requirement Current requirement listed by NVIDIA
Operating system Windows 10 or Windows 11
Memory 2 GB RAM
Storage 600 MB of available disk space
Minimum driver GeForce driver 551.52 or later
CPU Intel Pentium G-series, Core i3/i5/i7 or higher; AMD FX, Ryzen 3/5/7/9, Threadripper or higher
Supported GPU families GeForce RTX 20/30/40/50; GeForce GTX 800/900/1000/1600; selected GeForce MX100/MX200/MX300/800M/900M GPUs

These are application compatibility requirements, not a promise that every feature works on every listed GPU. For example, RTX HDR, RTX Dynamic Vibrance, many DLSS functions, and AI tools require newer RTX hardware. Driver support also differs by GPU generation, and older products may receive only security or legacy driver updates.

For that reason, avoid saying that NVIDIA App supports every NVIDIA GPU. Use NVIDIA’s current FAQ and hardware support documentation for a specific card.

How to install NVIDIA App

Option 1: Install the app directly

  1. Download NVIDIA App from NVIDIA’s official software page or from the current app download page.
  2. Run the installer and accept the prompts.
  3. Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
  4. Sign in only if you need Rewards, bundles, or other account-linked content.
  5. Open Settings and review overlay, notification, early-access, and data-sharing preferences.
  6. Open Drivers and install the recommended Game Ready or Studio driver if needed.
  7. Open Graphics and review each game’s settings before selecting Optimize.
  8. Launch a game and press Alt+Z to test the overlay.

Option 2: Install it with the driver

Download a current GeForce Game Ready or Studio driver from NVIDIA. The installer can offer NVIDIA App as an optional additional component. If you do not want the app, select the driver-only installation path instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A driver-only installation is useful for users who want a minimal system, prefer OBS Studio or another recorder, avoid overlays, or are isolating whether a problem comes from the driver or the companion app. It also confirms that NVIDIA App is not a universal prerequisite for using an NVIDIA GPU.

If GeForce Experience does not update automatically

NVIDIA says some old GeForce Experience installations cannot automatically update to NVIDIA App. If you do not see an upgrade path:

  1. Download NVIDIA App directly from NVIDIA.
  2. Install it over the existing supported NVIDIA software stack.
  3. Restart Windows if prompted.
  4. Check the overlay, recording destination, hotkeys, microphone, and display settings after installation.
  5. If the installation fails, open Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps, uninstall NVIDIA App, restart Windows, and retry using the latest app or driver installer.

Do not assume that every recording path, hotkey, game profile, or preference will migrate perfectly. NVIDIA documents the product transition, but it does not guarantee that every individual user setting will be preserved.

Can you go back to GeForce Experience?

NVIDIA documents a legacy fallback:

  1. Open Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find NVIDIA App.
  3. Open its three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
  4. Download and manually install the final listed GeForce Experience installer, version 3.28.0.417.

This is not a recommended long-term solution. NVIDIA explicitly labels GeForce Experience unsupported, and its warning about future server shutdowns means server-dependent features may stop working even if the local program still opens.

Important NVIDIA App controls and menu paths

Open the overlay

Press Alt+Z while in a supported game or application. From the overlay you can access recording, Instant Replay, screenshots, filters, the Gallery, and statistics.

Enable or disable Game Filters

Go to Settings > Features > Overlay > Game Filters and Photo Mode.

Game Filters were changed to off by default in later releases. If you do not use filters or Photo Mode, leaving them disabled is sensible, particularly when troubleshooting crashes, black screens, game-start failures, or unexpected frame-rate changes.

Configure ShadowPlay

Press Alt+Z, then open Settings > Video Capture. Depending on the GPU and app version, you can configure recording quality, resolution, frame rate, codec, audio, microphone, Instant Replay, and the destination folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NVIDIA App supports AV1 recording on compatible hardware. AV1 is the correct codec name; it is not AVI. Version 11.0.8 adds a recording option of up to 240 FPS for RTX 40- and RTX 50-series GPUs. That does not mean every RTX 40 or 50 system can practically record every game at 240 FPS. Resolution, codec, encoder capacity, storage speed, disk space, game load, and the number of active displays all affect what is possible.

Configure per-game graphics

Go to Graphics > Program Settings. Select a game or application, review NVIDIA’s recommended settings, and then change individual options if necessary. The global-settings view lets you apply driver-level defaults more broadly.

Use Optimize as a starting point rather than an unquestionable best setting. A recommendation may prioritize a balance between image quality and performance that does not match your monitor, competitive-game preferences, creator workload, or desired frame rate.

Configure displays

Open System > Display or System > Displays. Depending on the version and hardware, this is where you will find resolution, refresh rate, G-SYNC, scaling, color, custom resolution, Surround, and multi-display controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Menu labels can change as NVIDIA moves additional Control Panel features into the app. Current screenshots are more reliable than screenshots from the 2024 beta.

RTX HDR: requirements and common edge cases

RTX HDR is not a universal switch that works on every HDR monitor and every game. NVIDIA’s current FAQ lists these requirements for the standard setup:

  • Windows 11 version 22H2, build 22621, or later.
  • Windows HDR enabled.
  • An RTX 20-series or newer GPU.
  • A single-GPU configuration; SLI is not supported.
  • An HDR 400 or better display.
  • Driver 565.90 or later.
  • DirectX 9–12 or Vulkan.
  • In-game HDR disabled.
  • Windows Auto HDR disabled.
  • Fullscreen or exclusive-fullscreen mode in the standard setup.
  • Fast Sync disabled.

For borderless-windowed games, NVIDIA says to enable Windows Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Change default graphics settings > Optimizations for windowed games.

RTX HDR does not work with NVIDIA Surround or Clone Mode. If you use a mix of HDR and SDR extended displays, launch the game on the active HDR display.

Laptops introduce another complication. If the internal panel is connected to the integrated GPU through Optimus or MSHybrid mode, the NVIDIA App Display tab may not appear and some display controls may be unavailable. Advanced Optimus, a discrete-GPU-only mode, an external display connected directly to the NVIDIA GPU, or a BIOS display-mode change may be required, depending on the laptop.

RTX Dynamic Vibrance: requirements

NVIDIA lists these requirements for RTX Dynamic Vibrance:

  • Windows 10 version 22H2 or later.
  • An RTX 20-series or newer GPU.
  • Driver 551.61 or later.
  • DirectX 9–12 or Vulkan.
  • In-game HDR and Windows Auto HDR disabled for the standard use case.

The feature provides per-game and in-game overlay controls, but it should not be described as a replacement for the traditional Control Panel Digital Vibrance control on every NVIDIA GPU. It is an RTX-only feature with its own operating-system, driver, and game limitations.

Does NVIDIA App hurt gaming performance?

There is no single answer because installing the app, running the statistics overlay, recording video, and applying Game Filters are separate workloads.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In December 2024, Tom’s Hardware reported performance losses associated with Game Filters. Its testing found that the default behavior could reduce performance in some cases, and NVIDIA acknowledged a Game Filters-related issue, recommending that users disable Game Filters and Photo Mode and relaunch the game.

More recent testing by TechSpot in June 2026 found that merely having NVIDIA App installed did not secretly destroy frame rates. In its tested games, the Statistics Overlay produced no meaningful measurable loss, recording caused a small reduction, and Game Filters could have a more noticeable effect depending on which filters were active.

The useful conclusion is therefore:

NVIDIA App is not automatically a major performance drain, but its overlay, recording, and filters have different costs. Game Filters deserve the closest attention when investigating unexplained FPS loss.

These are independent tests, not universal guarantees. Results vary with the game, GPU, driver, resolution, codec, recording settings, and other overlays running on the system.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

FPS-loss troubleshooting sequence

  1. Open NVIDIA App > Settings > Features > Overlay.
  2. Disable Game Filters and Photo Mode.
  3. Disable Highlights if you do not use them.
  4. Turn off the Statistics Overlay.
  5. Disable recording and Instant Replay temporarily.
  6. Relaunch the game and compare performance.
  7. Update NVIDIA App and the graphics driver.
  8. Temporarily disable Xbox Game Bar, Discord, Steam, and launcher overlays.
  9. If the problem remains, install the driver without NVIDIA App and test again.

The final step separates a driver problem from an app or overlay problem. It is particularly useful before performing repeated clean installations.

Overlay, recording, HDR, and display troubleshooting

The overlay does not open

  • Confirm that the NVIDIA display driver meets the app’s minimum requirement of 551.52 or later.
  • Check that the overlay is enabled in NVIDIA App Settings.
  • Update the app and driver before reinstalling anything.
  • Disable competing overlays temporarily.
  • Check whether the game or its anti-cheat system blocks overlays.
  • On a laptop, check whether the display is routed through the integrated GPU.

Some protected games and applications deliberately restrict overlay or capture functions. An overlay failure in one title does not necessarily indicate that the installation is broken.

Recording produces a black screen or no file

DRM-protected content can prevent ShadowPlay recording. NVIDIA App can notify you when protected content blocks capture. A black video, missing video, or audio-only result may therefore be a content-protection restriction rather than an installation failure.

Also check the recording destination, free disk space, codec, microphone selection, and whether Instant Replay is enabled. Later NVIDIA App releases have included fixes for microphone selection, recording bitrate not being saved, destination folders, Instant Replay temporary files, OneDrive synchronization, and overlay availability on some GPUs. Updating should be the first step before attempting a complicated reinstall.

RTX HDR is missing or does not work

Check the operating system, driver, HDR toggle, display rating, game API, fullscreen mode, Auto HDR setting, Fast Sync, and GPU configuration against NVIDIA’s requirements above. Also verify that in-game HDR is disabled when using RTX HDR. Surround, Clone Mode, mixed HDR/SDR layouts, and laptop Optimus routing can each prevent the expected behavior.

The Display tab is missing on a laptop

This is often a hardware display-routing limitation rather than an NVIDIA App bug. On Optimus or MSHybrid laptops, the internal screen may be physically connected to the integrated GPU. In that case, NVIDIA App may not expose the Display tab. Connect an external display to a port driven by the NVIDIA GPU, or test Advanced Optimus or discrete-GPU mode if the laptop supports it.

Keep or reinstall legacy Control Panel only if you have a specific professional or not-yet-migrated workflow that requires it. For ordinary GeForce gaming, NVIDIA’s direction is clearly NVIDIA App.

What leading coverage gets wrong

  • The transition is still only planned. It is not. The beta began in 2024, version 1.0 launched in November 2024, and the GeForce Control Panel transition continued through 2026.
  • NVIDIA App and Control Panel were the same product. They were separate products with different responsibilities. NVIDIA App absorbed their functions gradually.
  • All NVIDIA software is now built into one application. NVIDIA App is also a discovery and installation hub. GeForce NOW, Broadcast, ChatRTX, FrameView, RTX Remix, and G-Assist remain separate.
  • Nothing was removed. Direct social broadcasting, Facebook and YouTube sharing, and 360-degree and stereo captures were removed.
  • You must install the app to install a driver. Current NVIDIA driver installers still provide an optional app component and a driver-only path.
  • The app always causes a large FPS loss. Testing points to feature-specific effects, with Game Filters more problematic than simply having the app installed.
  • Every RTX feature works on every RTX system. OS version, driver, display, game API, laptop wiring, and GPU generation all matter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still use GeForce Experience after installing NVIDIA App?

You can uninstall NVIDIA App and manually install the final GeForce Experience package NVIDIA lists, version 3.28.0.417. However, GeForce Experience is unsupported, NVIDIA no longer plans normal feature or bug work for it, and NVIDIA warns that critical servers will be shut down in the near future. It is a legacy fallback, not a dependable long-term alternative.

Does NVIDIA App replace every part of NVIDIA Control Panel?

It replaces the actively supported GeForce-side functions, including the main 3D, display, scaling, G-SYNC, color, and multi-monitor controls NVIDIA has migrated. Existing Control Panel installations may remain, and RTX PRO workstation functions such as Mosaic or Quadro Sync II may still require the classic application.

Can I install NVIDIA drivers without NVIDIA App?

Yes. NVIDIA’s current GeForce driver pages describe NVIDIA App as an optional additional installation. Use the standalone driver installer and select the driver-only path if you do not want the companion app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is NVIDIA App missing display controls on my laptop?

Optimus or MSHybrid display routing may connect the internal panel to the integrated GPU instead of the NVIDIA GPU. In that arrangement, NVIDIA App may not show the Display tab. An external display connected directly to the NVIDIA GPU, Advanced Optimus, or a discrete-GPU-only mode may expose additional controls if your laptop supports them.

Does NVIDIA App still stream directly to Twitch or YouTube?

No. Direct Twitch and YouTube broadcasting was removed. NVIDIA App still supports local ShadowPlay recording, while livestreaming requires OBS Studio, Streamlabs, or another streaming workflow.

The Bottom Line

Most GeForce users should move to NVIDIA App. It is NVIDIA’s supported successor to GeForce Experience and the main destination for current GeForce overlay, recording, optimization, driver, display, DLSS, and RTX features. You do not need it merely to install an NVIDIA driver, and users who prefer a minimal system can continue with the standalone installer.

Before switching, remember what changed: direct social broadcasting and some older capture features are gone; GeForce Experience is unsupported; and specialized RTX PRO workstation controls may still need the legacy Control Panel. For everyone else, NVIDIA App is no longer an upcoming replacement—it is the current NVIDIA software platform.
