NVIDIA unveiled the GeForce GTX 1060 on July 7, 2016, then scheduled retail availability for July 19, 2016. Partner cards started at $249, while NVIDIA’s Founders Edition cost $299. The launch model used a GP106 Pascal GPU, 6GB of GDDR5 memory and a 120W power target.
That distinction matters: July 19 was the availability date, not the date NVIDIA first announced the card. NVIDIA’s announcement is archived in its July 7 newsroom release, and its July 19 launch-day article described the GTX 1060 as available.
Why the GTX 1060 mattered in 2016
The GTX 1060 was the third major desktop gaming GPU in NVIDIA’s Pascal generation, following the GTX 1080 and GTX 1070. NVIDIA positioned it as a mainstream card for high-volume 1080p gaming and entry-level virtual reality, bringing what it described as GTX 980-class performance to a lower price and power envelope.
Its launch also sharpened competition with AMD’s recently introduced Radeon RX 480. The two cards occupied the same broad mainstream price class, but results depended on the game, graphics API and test method. DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 workloads did not always produce the same ranking, so neither launch claim should be treated as a universal result.

Announcement, launch date and price
| Version | Launch price | Availability |
|---|---|---|
| Partner and custom boards | Starting at $249 | From NVIDIA board partners on July 19, 2016 |
| GeForce GTX 1060 Founders Edition | $299 | Direct from NVIDIA on July 19, 2016 |
These were U.S. launch MSRPs. Taxes, supply, retailer pricing, factory overclocks and cooling designs could make an individual card more expensive. The $249 figure did not apply to every GTX 1060, and the Founders Edition carried a $50 premium over the partner-card starting price.

These specifications come from NVIDIA’s launch-day specifications table. The July 2016 announcement covered the 6GB model; a later 3GB GTX 1060 was a separate product.
What NVIDIA claimed about performance
GTX 980-class positioning
NVIDIA said the GTX 1060 delivered GTX 980-level gaming performance. Its July 19 article reported an internal average of 2.4% faster than the GTX 980 at 1920×1080 and 73.1% faster than the GTX 960. Those figures were NVIDIA’s own testing, not independent review results.
RX 480 comparison
In its selected test suite, NVIDIA claimed an average performance advantage over AMD’s Radeon RX 480 and more than 75% greater power efficiency. The comparison used NVIDIA driver 368.64 and AMD driver 16.6.2 at 1080p; NVIDIA cited 120W for the GTX 1060 versus a measured 185W total graphics-power figure for the RX 480. The claims therefore describe NVIDIA’s games, settings, drivers and measurement method, not every workload.

VR and Pascal features
NVIDIA promoted VRWorks and Simultaneous Multi-Projection, claiming up to a threefold VR graphics improvement through supported technology paths. That was a feature and software-path claim, not a guarantee that every VR game would run three times faster. The launch materials also highlighted DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 support, Ansel photo mode and NVIDIA’s VR Funhouse, including compatibility claims for the HTC Vive.

The Founders Edition was NVIDIA’s own reference-style board. NVIDIA described a faceted die-cast aluminum body, a custom thermal solution, dual-FET power supply, low-impedance power-delivery network and custom voltage regulators.
Partner boards could use different heatsinks, fans, circuit boards, factory clocks, dimensions and noise profiles. They were the products covered by the $249 starting MSRP, while the Founders Edition was sold directly by NVIDIA for $299. It is therefore inaccurate to treat the Founders Edition’s physical design or output layout as universal GTX 1060 specifications.

Power, hardware and operating-system requirements
NVIDIA’s Founders Edition installation guide specified these historical requirements:
- A PCI Express or PCI Express 3.0-compatible motherboard with one dual-width x16 graphics slot.
- A power supply rated at 400W or greater.
- One six-pin PCIe supplementary power connector.
- At least 4GB of system memory, with 6GB recommended.
- Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 7, Linux or FreeBSD x86 in the original guide.
The 400W figure is NVIDIA’s Founders Edition guidance; complete-system requirements can vary with the processor, drives and board design. The operating-system list is historical documentation from 2016, not a 2026 guarantee of current driver support.

How independent reviews fit the launch story
Independent launch coverage tested retail cards across broader game suites and different APIs, so its results could differ from NVIDIA’s selected benchmarks. The Ars Technica review and TechPowerUp technical review are useful for separating vendor positioning from measured, game-by-game behavior. Their context is especially important when comparing the GTX 1060 with the RX 480 or assessing DirectX 11 versus DirectX 12 performance.
What the July 2016 launch means today
The GTX 1060 became historically important because it brought Pascal’s mainstream card to a large 1080p audience at a lower power target than NVIDIA’s high-end models. Its 120W design and single six-pin connector suited systems that could not accommodate a more demanding GPU, while 6GB of memory was a substantial step above the 2GB GTX 960.
Those facts explain the product’s 2016 significance; they are not a current 2026 buying recommendation. The original $249 and $299 prices, launch drivers and period game results should not be used as present-day market or compatibility guarantees.
