Nuwanidu Fernando was given out caught behind for 1 during Sri Lanka’s men’s Asian Games third-place playoff against Bangladesh on 3 October 2026. Contemporary reports say replays appeared to show a gap between bat and ball and that DRS was unavailable, so Fernando had no review route. The scorecard records the dismissal as caught by Litton Das off Al Islam; that notation records the decision, not whether it was correct.
Why was Nuwanidu Fernando given out?
Hindustan Times reported that Fernando tried to play a delivery through the covers, missed it, and was given out after Bangladesh appealed. Newswire described the appeal as caught behind. Both reports said replay images appeared to show separation between bat and ball. Those accounts describe what the replays seemed to show; they are not an independent technical review of the video.
The BBC scorecard records Fernando’s dismissal as caught by Litton Das off Al Islam, with Sri Lanka at 18 for three. That is the recorded mode of dismissal, not independent confirmation that the ball touched the bat.

Hindustan Times and Newswire reported that DRS was not available for the match. On that account, Fernando could not ask for a review of the decision. The reports do not establish the competition’s governing review rules, so the reported lack of DRS should not be treated as a cited official rule.

Sri Lanka made 165 for nine in 20 overs; Bangladesh were all out for 102 in 17.3 overs, and Sri Lanka won by 63 runs. The BBC scorecard lists Fernando at 1 from two balls. What does “nightmare from the 90s” mean?
The phrase is a rhetorical comparison in Hindustan Times’ headline, referring broadly to poor subcontinental umpiring in the 1990s. That article does not identify a particular historical decision or provide evidence for a trend, so the phrase should not be read as a documented comparison to a specific match.
