Novig is a real-money exchange for contracts tied to sports outcomes. It says its operating company, Ludlow Exchange, LLC, received Designated Contract Market status from the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) in June 2026. That federal designation does not settle whether Novig is legal where you live. Availability depends on where you are physically located when you trade, Novig blocks several states on its own, and state gaming authorities and courts still dispute whether sports event contracts fall under state gambling rules.
On safety, the accurate answer is that Novig is not low-risk. It describes age limits, identity checks, and responsible-trading tools, but those are the company’s own descriptions. The core risk is simple: a losing contract settles at $0, so you can lose everything you put into a position.
How Novig trading works
Novig describes itself as an exchange for event contracts tied to sports outcomes. Each contract trades between $0 and $1, and its price is the market’s live estimate of how likely the outcome is. You can buy a contract, sell it before settlement, or hold it until the event settles. A winning contract pays $1 and a losing contract pays $0. You need a funded account, and you trade with real money. These are Novig’s own descriptions of its mechanics. This article has not independently tested its pricing or order execution.
The main structural difference from a traditional sportsbook is who sets the price. A sportsbook sets fixed odds for its own bets. Novig presents prices as set by trading between users. Market-set prices and the option to exit early are real features, but they do not remove risk, guarantee a better price, or change the legal analysis below.

A worked example (illustrative, before fees)
Suppose a contract trades at $0.40 and you buy 100 of them for $40. The table shows the two settlement outcomes. This is arithmetic from the $0 and $1 settlement rule, not a figure Novig has published, and it leaves out fees, which this article could not confirm.

Selling early works differently. If the market price rises to $0.55 before settlement, selling the same 100 contracts would return $55 before fees, a $15 gain on that hypothetical. Whether you get that price depends on whether a buyer is willing to pay it when you sell, so an early exit is not guaranteed.
Is Novig available in my state?
The short answer is that it depends on where you are when you trade. Novig’s help pages, reviewed in September 2026, list Arizona, Nevada, and Michigan as unavailable. The same pages say you must be physically located in an enabled location when you trade, and that you must be 21 or older and pass identity checks. Because the rule follows your physical location, a traveler may be blocked while visiting from a state where Novig is otherwise available.

The available pages do not give a complete list of enabled states that this article can confirm. Do not assume that a state missing from the unavailable list is enabled. To check for yourself:
- Open Novig’s Help Center and search for “Is Novig available in my state?”
- Read the current list of unavailable and enabled jurisdictions, and note the date shown on the page.
- Confirm that the place you will be physically trading from is enabled, and that you are 21 or older, before you deposit.
Is Novig legal in my state?
There is no single answer that holds across the United States. Novig’s federal status and the state-law dispute are separate questions, and each needs its own explanation.
What Novig says about its federal status
Novig’s Help Center says the company operates as a CFTC-regulated prediction market and a Designated Contract Market, with a federal rather than a state sportsbook licensing basis. In its June 16, 2026 announcement, Novig said the CFTC designated Ludlow Exchange, LLC on that date. These are company statements, so they should be attributed to Novig. The designation also does not answer whether every sports contract is lawful under each state’s gambling laws.

Why the federal designation does not settle state law
The CFTC has publicly asserted jurisdiction over registered contract markets and has filed cases against states that try to apply gambling laws to prediction markets. That is the agency’s position. State gaming authorities and industry groups dispute it. The American Gaming Association has argued in congressional testimony that sports event contracts undermine state gaming oversight and consumer protections. That is the position of an industry stakeholder, not a court holding.

What the August 2026 Kalshi ruling does and does not mean
In August 2026, a Ninth Circuit appellate panel declined to let Kalshi resume sports and election trading in Nevada while its case continued, as reported by the Associated Press. The panel found that Kalshi had not shown federal law likely preempts Nevada’s gaming laws. Preemption means federal law overriding a state law. The ruling shows that the federal-versus-state question is contested. It is not a judgment about Novig and does not decide the question for any other company or state. Whether any case names Novig or Ludlow Exchange directly is something this article cannot confirm, so check current court dockets before relying on any position.
Avoid stating that Novig is legal in all 50 states, or that CFTC designation means state gambling laws do not apply. Neither claim is supported by the public record described above.

Is Novig safe to use?
“Safe” can mean several different things, and the answer differs for each.
- Trading risk: High. Losing positions settle at $0, and early exit depends on market conditions. See the risk section below.
- Legal footing: Unsettled, as explained above. Novig’s location and age rules can block you from trading.
- Consumer protection: Novig describes its own safeguards. Independent evidence that they work is not available, and the gaming industry argues that prediction markets lack the state oversight that licensed sportsbooks face.
- Account and fund security: Not established. This article has no verified information on how customer funds are held, how account security is handled, or how disputes are resolved.

Trading risk in plain terms
Contracts can lose value and settle at zero. Because you fund the account with real money, losses are real money. Whether you can sell before settlement depends on the market at that moment, not on a guaranteed exit. Independent figures on user losses, problem-gambling outcomes, complaint rates, and market liquidity for Novig are not available, so this article does not offer a safety statistic for the platform.
Before you deposit
- Confirm that you are 21 or older and that the place you will trade from is enabled.
- Read the current fee schedule, deposit methods, and withdrawal terms in your account, since this article could not verify them.
- Use the deposit and loss limits Novig describes before your first trade, and decide on a maximum you could lose in full without harm.
- Recheck the Help Center’s availability list and any court or regulatory notices before each new deposit, because both can change.
Novig’s scale and sponsorship claims
Novig reported more than $5 billion in cumulative trading volume in its June 16, 2026 designation announcement, and more than $6 billion in an August 4, 2026 announcement. Both figures are company-reported. Trading volume measures activity. It does not measure safety, fairness, or whether users make money.
On July 30, 2026, Novig announced a partnership with the New York Mets. Lew Sherr, President of Business Operations for the New York Mets, said in that announcement: “We’re proud to be the first Major League Baseball club to partner with a prediction market company, giving our fans a new and engaging way to connect with the game.” A sponsorship is a marketing relationship. It does not indicate regulatory approval in any state.
