Neither phone is the universal winner. Choose the Nothing Phone (4a) for its dedicated 3.5x optical periscope camera, 50 W wired charging and distinctive Nothing software and design. Choose the Google Pixel 9a for Qi wireless charging, an IP68 rating and Google’s longer seven-year update commitment. Your country, storage tier and current prices can change which is the better buy.

Nothing Phone (4a) vs Pixel 9a at a glance

The most meaningful difference is not the processor name or a peak-brightness number. It is how each phone handles zoom photography, charging, durability and long-term ownership.

Which phone has the better camera system?

Nothing’s advantage: a real optical-zoom camera

Nothing gives the Phone (4a) a three-camera rear system that includes a 50 MP OIS periscope camera with 3.5x optical zoom. Optical zoom uses the dedicated lens to frame a distant subject without relying solely on digital cropping. Nothing also advertises up to 70x ultra zoom, a highly processed long-range mode rather than an indication that every 70x image will retain detail.

  • Gemini AI Integration: Built-in Gemini AI assistant supercharges your productivity and creativity, helping you accomplish tasks faster, generate content, and unlock new possibilities right from your smartphone without needing additional apps or subscriptions

The main camera is a 50 MP OIS unit, and the phone has a 32 MP front camera. This hardware is the more flexible choice for portraits, signs, stage events and other scenes where you regularly need a tighter frame from across a room or street. The specifications come from Nothing’s official Phone (4a) product page.

Pixel’s approach: fewer cameras, computational tools

Google lists a dual rear system for the Pixel 9a: a 48 MP wide camera with optical image stabilisation and a 13 MP ultrawide. Its listed Super Res Zoom reaches up to 8x. The front camera is 13 MP. Google’s hardware specifications describe the sensors and zoom range, but they do not prove that the Pixel will produce better or worse photos in every situation.

Pixel buyers are generally choosing Google’s camera processing and software tools rather than a dedicated telephoto lens. That can be attractive if you mostly shoot people, pets, food and everyday scenes at normal distances, and you prefer Google’s editing and computational photography features. The Pixel cannot provide the same native 3.5x optical perspective listed for the Nothing phone.

What the specifications cannot answer

Neither manufacturer specification page establishes shutter speed for moving subjects, skin-tone rendering, autofocus consistency, night photography, video stabilisation or the quality of extreme zoom. Those require controlled testing or independent long-term reviews. Do not treat the 50 MP, 70x or 8x figures as a ranking.

  • Choose Nothing when a dedicated zoom lens and longer-range framing are central to how you take pictures.
  • Choose Pixel when Google’s computational camera features and editing workflow matter more than optical reach.
  • If camera quality is your deciding factor, compare full-resolution samples from the exact regional models before buying.

Match the camera to your subjects

A dedicated periscope is most useful when you cannot move closer: a child on a sports field, a performer on a stage, a distant building detail or a portrait where you want a tighter perspective. It also gives you a genuine intermediate focal length instead of asking the main sensor to crop aggressively. Nothing’s 70x label should be treated as an optional experimental mode for framing, not as a promise of usable detail at that magnification.

The Pixel’s simpler camera layout can be perfectly adequate if most of your photographs are made at normal distances. Its 8x Super Res Zoom combines sensor data and software processing, so the result may depend heavily on light, subject movement and the phone’s algorithms. A specification sheet cannot tell you whether its colour, HDR treatment or portrait separation matches your taste.

Battery life and charging: speed versus convenience

Nothing prioritises wired charging speed

Nothing lists a 5,080 mAh battery for most markets and a 5,400 mAh variant for India. It advertises 50 W wired charging. The capacity is close to Google’s figure on paper, but battery size does not predict screen-on time by itself; software, display settings, network conditions and camera use all affect endurance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nothing’s product page also contains manufacturer usage-duration claims. Those claims use Nothing’s own testing and should not be compared directly with Google’s different battery-test methodology.

Pixel adds wireless charging

Google lists a typical 5,100 mAh battery for Pixel 9a, fast wired charging and Qi-certified wireless charging. Google describes more than 30 hours under its stated usage framing and up to 100 hours with Extreme Battery Saver. These are Google claims, not an independent battery test.

  • Google Pixel 9a with Gemini - Android Smartphone with Incredible Camera and AI Photo Editing, All-Day Battery, and Powerful Security - Obsidian - 128 GB For Verizon (Renewed)

Wireless charging is useful on a desk, bedside stand or car mount because you can set the phone down without plugging in a cable. It is usually less about maximum refill speed than convenience. The Nothing phone’s advertised wired rate is the stronger choice if you want the quickest compatible cable-based top-up.

Capacity is not the same as endurance

The two listed capacities are effectively close: 5,080 mAh for Nothing in most markets and 5,100 mAh typical capacity for Pixel. That small difference does not identify a winner. Screen resolution, refresh behaviour, modem use, temperature, signal strength, app activity and battery-health state all matter. Treat the capacities as a specification, not a runtime guarantee.

Check the charger before you order

Charging speed depends on a compatible charger, cable, regional package contents and the phone’s charging protocol. Confirm what is included in your market rather than assuming a 50 W or fast-charge claim means the required adapter is in the box.

Also consider your existing accessories. Pixel’s Qi support can reuse a charging pad you already own, while Nothing’s headline wired rate is useful only when the phone, adapter and cable can negotiate the relevant speed. A cheaper phone that requires a new charger may not remain cheaper after checkout.

Software support and update longevity

Nothing Phone (4a)

Nothing says the Phone (4a) runs Android 16 and receives three years of OS updates plus six years of security updates. OS support and security support are separate promises: the phone can continue receiving security fixes after major Android-version upgrades stop.

Pixel 9a

Google’s policy promises seven years of OS and security updates for the Pixel 9a, counting from the date the model first became available on the Google Store in the United States. Pixel Drops may also be included. The seven-year period does not begin on the day you personally buy the phone, so a later purchase has a shorter remaining period than a launch-day purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read Google’s Pixel software update policy for the starting-point rule. If you keep phones for many years, resell them after extended use or need a predictable security runway for work, Pixel’s stated policy is the clearer advantage. Nothing’s six-year security promise is still substantial, but its three-year OS window is shorter.

Long support can affect ownership beyond updates. A phone that remains eligible for security fixes is easier to keep as a banking, work or travel device and may be more attractive on the used market. It does not guarantee that every future app will run perfectly or that hardware will remain healthy for seven years, so also consider battery replacement options and warranty coverage in your country.

Durability: IP64 versus IP68

What Pixel’s IP68 rating means

Google lists the Pixel 9a as IP68. The rating indicates a higher level of dust protection and water-ingress resistance under the standard’s controlled test conditions than IP64. It does not make the phone waterproof, and it does not guarantee protection after a drop, a cracked seal, repair work or normal wear.

  • Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]

What Nothing’s IP64 rating means

Nothing lists the Phone (4a) as IP64 and says it tested the phone under 25 cm of water for up to 20 minutes. IP64 indicates dust protection and resistance to water splashes, not the same immersion rating listed for the Pixel. Do not intentionally submerge it or treat the test description as permission to use it underwater.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For either model, keep liquid away from ports while charging, dry the phone before connecting a cable and follow the manufacturer’s warranty exclusions. Water resistance can diminish with age and physical damage.

This difference matters most for people who work outdoors, live in a wet climate or want more tolerance for accidental spills. It matters less if the phone is normally kept in a dry pocket or case, but IP ratings should still be compared honestly rather than described as waterproofing.

Displays: resolution, refresh rate and brightness

Nothing’s panel

Nothing advertises a 1.5K flexible AMOLED display with adaptive refresh from 30 to 120 Hz and up to 4,500 nits peak brightness. A flexible AMOLED panel and a refresh rate that can drop to 30 Hz may help the phone balance smooth scrolling with power use, although real battery results depend on the content and settings.

Pixel’s panel

Google lists a 6.3-inch pOLED display at 1080 × 2424 resolution, a 60–120 Hz refresh rate and up to 2,700 nits peak brightness. The Pixel’s listed resolution is lower than Nothing’s 1.5K description, while both phones advertise high-refresh modes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not declare a winner from peak-nit numbers alone. Manufacturers can measure peak brightness in different windows, modes and conditions. Outdoor legibility, automatic-brightness behaviour, colour tuning and touch response need hands-on use or comparable testing.

Nothing’s 30–120 Hz range suggests more flexibility for low-motion content, whereas Google specifies 60–120 Hz. That distinction is a specification, not proof that one phone lasts longer. Adaptive refresh may also vary by app, brightness and system mode.

Performance and storage hardware

Nothing names Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 and UFS 3.1 storage for the Phone (4a). Google uses its Tensor G4 platform and a Titan M2 security coprocessor in the Pixel 9a. These platform names describe different design priorities, but the available specifications do not establish a benchmark winner or sustained gaming advantage.

For everyday work, assess the tasks you actually perform: camera processing, navigation, messaging, streaming, photo editing and games. If you play demanding 3D titles for long sessions, look for independent sustained-performance tests of the exact software versions. A short benchmark or chipset comparison cannot account for heat, throttling, game optimisation or battery drain.

  • Tiny is epic - Use Macro Focus to reveal vivid color and striking contrast in photos and videos of the smallest details – like raindrops, flowers, or sprinkles.

UFS 3.1 identifies Nothing’s stated storage technology, while Titan M2 is a security coprocessor rather than a general performance rating. Neither label tells you how much storage is available after system files, whether a particular memory tier is sold in your country or how long heavy workloads can run before temperatures change performance. Check the exact configuration before ordering.

Design, interface and everyday experience

Nothing’s decision case includes its distinctive hardware styling, the Glyph Bar design language and the Nothing OS interface. Those are experiential reasons to choose it, not measurable guarantees of speed or camera output. Try the interface in a shop if notification handling, quick settings, launcher behaviour or the Glyph features will affect daily use.

Pixel 9a is the better fit for buyers who want Google’s Android experience, Pixel camera tools and the long update policy in one package. The choice is subjective: a clean interface that feels intuitive to you is more valuable than a specification that you never use.

Think about small daily interactions as well as headline hardware: how you silence notifications, access the camera, move photos to a computer, use Android Auto, authenticate banking apps and charge overnight. These preferences are difficult to compare from a table and are good reasons to handle both phones before buying if possible.

Price, region and what to verify before buying

The available listings do not represent one like-for-like market. Nothing’s cited page is a UK product listing, while the observed Google Store listing is for Ireland. Displayed prices, stock, storage options, taxes, bundles and warranty terms can differ by country and change over time. Do not compare those pages as if they were same-market launch prices.

A value verdict also depends on storage. Compare the same capacity, not the cheapest listing for one phone against a larger-capacity version of the other. Include delivery, sales tax, a compatible charger, case and any trade-in conditions. A temporary promotion can reverse the ranking even when the hardware has not changed.

Before you decide, check the following for your country:

  • Current price for the same storage tier on both phones.
  • Whether the exact colour and memory configuration is in stock.
  • Official warranty length and who handles repairs.
  • Carrier bands, eSIM support and 5G availability where you live.
  • Whether a compatible fast charger is included or must be purchased separately.
  • Any launch promotion, trade-in credit or retailer-only bundle, and when it expires.

Use the Nothing product listing and the Google Store Ireland listing as specification and availability references, then open your local store before placing an order.

Which phone should you buy?

Buy Nothing Phone (4a) if these priorities match you

  • You want a dedicated 3.5x optical periscope camera for distant subjects.
  • You value a higher advertised wired charging rate of 50 W.
  • You prefer the Glyph Bar styling and Nothing OS interface.
  • You accept IP64 rather than IP68 and a shorter OS-update period in exchange for those features.

Buy Google Pixel 9a if these priorities match you

  • You want Qi wireless charging for desks, stands or a car mount.
  • You need the stronger published dust-and-water rating of IP68.
  • You prefer Google’s listed camera tools and are comfortable with an 8x Super Res Zoom limit rather than a dedicated telephoto lens.
  • You plan to keep the phone for years and value seven years of OS and security updates from the model’s first US Google Store availability.

When the decision is genuinely close

If both phones cost roughly the same in your market, decide by the feature you will use weekly rather than by a single headline specification. A frequent traveller or concert photographer may get more value from Nothing’s optical zoom and fast wired charging. Someone who charges overnight on a pad, works outdoors or keeps devices for six or seven years may prefer Pixel’s wireless charging, IP68 rating and support policy.

If you rarely zoom, never use a wireless pad and replace phones every two or three years, the headline differences may have little practical effect. In that case, compare the current deal, preferred interface, ergonomics and included accessories. Conversely, if one feature solves a daily inconvenience, paying a little more for it can be more rational than choosing on processor branding.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Write down your local prices for matching storage tiers, including tax and delivery.
  2. Decide whether optical zoom or wireless charging solves a real problem in your routine.
  3. Confirm the battery configuration for your region, especially if you are buying the Nothing phone in India.
  4. Check the manufacturer warranty and authorised repair options before paying.
  5. Verify carrier compatibility, eSIM availability and 5G bands with your network.
  6. Read the current update-policy pages and note the Pixel’s US Google Store starting point.
  7. If photography is decisive, compare independent samples from the exact models and software versions available to you.
  8. Confirm charger, cable, case and storage requirements so the total cost is comparable.

Bottom line

Pick the Nothing Phone (4a) for the more distinctive camera hardware and faster advertised wired charging. Pick the Google Pixel 9a for wireless charging, IP68 protection and the longer stated update commitment. Because the cited listings cover different markets and no independent testing establishes a universal camera, battery or performance winner, verify your local price and priorities before choosing.
