Choose the Nothing Phone (3) if you want a larger 6.67-inch display, a dedicated periscope camera with 3x optical reach, and 256GB starting storage. Choose the Google Pixel 9 if a clearly documented seven-year software-support commitment and a more compact 6.3-inch phone matter more. The Phone (3) has more camera hardware on its specification sheet, but megapixel counts do not establish which phone produces better photographs. A fair decision depends on your scenes, local prices, storage needs, and how long you plan to keep the device.

Nothing Phone (3) vs. Pixel 9 at a glance

The two phones target different priorities. Nothing emphasizes a four-camera system and a larger screen; Google emphasizes computational photography and a published long-term update policy. The table shows what the manufacturers and named market sources establish, rather than inferring performance from specifications.

Decision point Nothing Phone (3) Google Pixel 9
Main rear cameras 50MP main, 50MP periscope telephoto, 50MP ultrawide 50MP wide and 48MP ultrawide with Macro Focus
Optical reach 3x optical magnification from the periscope camera (Nothing UK specification) No dedicated telephoto camera is listed for the base Pixel 9
Front camera 50MP Pixel 9 front-camera details are not stated in the cited specification set
Display 6.67-inch, 120Hz AMOLED 6.3-inch display
Documented software policy Nothing OS features are described, but a comparable update-duration commitment was not stated in the cited official material Seven years of OS, security, and Pixel Drop updates from first US Google Store availability
Storage and observed price US product page displayed $699 for 12GB/256GB when accessed in 2026; UK launch prices were £799 for 12GB/256GB and £899 for 16GB/512GB A current Pixel 9 price was not verified in the cited sources

Nothing’s UK page supplies the detailed camera and screen figures, while its US page supplies the observed US configuration and price. Google’s hardware specification page supplies the Pixel 9 camera, display, and support information. Prices and stock can change after those pages were accessed.

Camera hardware: what each phone actually includes

Nothing Phone (3): four 50MP cameras

Nothing describes the Phone (3) as having four 50MP cameras: a main camera, a periscope telephoto, an ultrawide, and a front-facing camera. The UK specification identifies optical image stabilization (OIS) on both the main and periscope cameras. It also specifies 3x optical magnification for the periscope unit. OIS can help reduce blur from hand movement during still photography and video, but it does not guarantee sharp subjects when people or animals move.

The main camera uses a 1/1.3-inch sensor according to Nothing’s UK product information. Sensor size, lens aperture, processing, and focus behavior all influence results; the 50MP label alone cannot predict low-light detail or color. Nothing also advertises 6x lossless magnification and up to 60x “ultra zoom.” Those are manufacturer claims about its processing modes, not independent measurements of resolved detail. Treat them as features to inspect in your own scenes rather than as proof of camera superiority.

Pixel 9: wide and ultrawide cameras, not the Pro telephoto

Google’s official Pixel hardware specifications list a 50MP wide camera and a 48MP ultrawide camera with Macro Focus for the base Pixel 9. Macro Focus is intended for close subjects, allowing the ultrawide camera to focus at short distances. The base Pixel 9 specification does not list a dedicated telephoto camera. Do not transfer the telephoto specification of a Pixel 9 Pro model to the Pixel 9 discussed here.

Without a dedicated long lens, the Pixel 9 must obtain tighter framing through cropping, computational processing, or digital magnification from its available cameras. That can be perfectly adequate for occasional distant subjects, but it is a different hardware approach from the Phone (3)’s 3x periscope camera. Whether the difference is visible depends on lighting, distance, movement, and the final viewing or print size.

Why megapixels do not decide the winner

Pixel count describes the number of recorded photosites, not the final image quality. A camera comparison should account for exposure consistency, highlight recovery, shadow noise, autofocus reliability, color rendering, skin tones, lens flare, and stabilization. A lower-resolution image from a well-tuned sensor and processor can look better than a higher-resolution image with motion blur or aggressive sharpening.

How to compare the cameras fairly

No controlled, direct Phone (3)-versus-Pixel 9 test was established in the available material. If you are choosing between them in a shop, borrowing one, or evaluating returnable purchases, use matched scenes and identical framing rather than relying on specifications.

Daylight main-camera detail and color

  • Photograph the same textured subject, such as foliage, brick, or fabric, from the same position.
  • Use each phone’s default photo mode first; record whether HDR or scene optimization is automatic.
  • Inspect fine texture at 100 percent, but also view the complete image at the size you normally share. Over-sharpening can look impressive when enlarged and unnatural at normal size.
  • Check neutral surfaces and skin tones for color casts, especially under mixed shade and sunlight.

Indoor and night exposure

Take a scene with a bright window, a dim interior, and a moving person. Compare whether highlights remain controlled, shadows retain useful detail, and the phone holds focus. A tripod-like still scene can favor multi-frame night processing; a moving subject reveals whether the camera can shorten exposure without excessive noise. Keep the phones on the same software versions where possible, because camera processing can change through updates.

Portrait edges and skin tone

Use hair, glasses, and semi-transparent objects to test subject separation. Look for halos around the head, cut-off ears, and blur that changes abruptly at the shoulders. Photograph several skin tones in the same light. Portrait processing is not represented by a camera’s megapixel count, and a dedicated telephoto lens does not automatically produce more natural separation.

Ultrawide distortion and close-ups

Capture a building or grid near the frame edges to reveal stretching and corner softness. Then photograph a small object from close range. The Pixel 9’s listed Macro Focus feature is relevant for close subjects; the Phone (3)’s 50MP ultrawide specification does not by itself establish its minimum focus distance or macro quality. Check whether either phone changes color or exposure noticeably when switching from the main to the ultrawide camera.

Matched optical reach

Frame a distant sign or person at the Phone (3)’s 3x optical setting. On the Pixel 9, use the closest available equivalent magnification and keep the subject the same size in the frame. Compare lettering, hair, foliage, and fine edges rather than judging only the preview. Repeat in daylight and at dusk. The Phone (3)’s periscope lens gives it a hardware advantage in flexibility, but only a matched sample reveals how much detail survives processing.

Selfies and video

Test faces in backlight, indoor light, and motion. For video, walk while recording and observe stabilization, focus transitions, microphone consistency, and exposure changes when passing a bright doorway. Record the same resolution and frame rate on both devices. The cited specifications do not provide a controlled head-to-head result for these behaviors, so any conclusion should be based on your own matched clips or clearly attributed independent testing.

How to read third-party reviews

A Tom’s Guide review reports that publication’s own Phone (3) impressions and compares sample photographs with other phones, including a Pixel 9 Pro XL. The Pixel 9 Pro XL is not the base Pixel 9 in this comparison. Those observations may illustrate how that publication evaluated the Phone (3), but they cannot settle a Phone (3)-versus-Pixel 9 matchup. Keep the model names, test conditions, and reviewer’s date attached to any conclusion you rely on.

Software, updates, and ownership horizon

Pixel 9: a specific seven-year promise

Google’s Pixel hardware specifications state: “7 years of OS, security, and Pixel Drop updates.” The accompanying footnote says the period is measured from when the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL first became available on the Google Store in the United States. This is a documented policy covering operating-system releases, security patches, and Pixel Drop feature updates. It is not a promise that every future feature will run on identical hardware or arrive in every country at the same time.

The US starting point matters if you are buying elsewhere or comparing a later retail date. The seven-year clock is tied to first US Google Store availability, not to your personal purchase date. Ask a seller for the device’s release context and keep the official policy page available when calculating the remaining support period.

Phone (3): support duration is not established here

Nothing’s official Phone (3) material describes Nothing OS and current software features, but the cited pages do not state a clear duration for major Android upgrades or security patches. That does not prove that support is short; it means a comparable, verifiable number is unavailable in the material used for this comparison. Do not substitute an unverified third-party figure or assume that the Phone (3) matches Google’s seven-year policy.

For a long ownership cycle, this documentation gap is itself a buying consideration. Before paying, ask Nothing or the retailer for a current support-policy statement covering Android-version upgrades, security-patch frequency, and the date from which the term is counted. Save the answer and check whether it applies to your regional model.

What update policy changes in practice

  • A longer published term can make a phone easier to keep through multiple contract or resale cycles.
  • Security updates matter for banking, work accounts, password managers, and device-management requirements.
  • Feature-update eligibility may vary by region, carrier certification, hardware capability, or language even when the overall policy is broad.
  • An update promise does not guarantee that battery capacity, repairability, or app performance will remain unchanged for seven years.

Display size and everyday handling

Nothing lists a 6.67-inch 120Hz AMOLED display for the Phone (3). Google lists the Pixel 9 at 6.3 inches. The larger Nothing panel gives documents, maps, games, and two-handed typing more physical room. A 120Hz refresh rate can make scrolling and supported animations appear smoother, although actual behavior depends on software, brightness, and power-management modes.

The Pixel 9’s smaller listed size generally occupies less space in a pocket or one-handed grip, but screen diagonal is not the same as complete phone dimensions or weight. Cases, camera modules, aspect ratio, and bezel design affect handling. If comfort is decisive, hold both devices with the cases you intend to use rather than inferring ergonomics from diagonal measurements.

Screen size also changes the value equation. A larger display can reduce the need for a tablet during travel, while a smaller device may be easier to use on public transport or while taking photos one-handed. Neither preference is objectively better; it is a daily-use trade-off.

Price and value: compare the same purchase, not a headline number

Phone (3) prices documented in the sources

When accessed in 2026, Nothing’s US product page displayed $699 for a selected 12GB/256GB Phone (3) configuration. That is a page-level displayed price for the stated region and configuration, not a universal or guaranteed transaction price. Taxes, delivery, promotions, stock, and seller terms can change the amount you actually pay.

Nothing’s UK pre-order terms listed launch recommended retail prices of £799 for 12GB/256GB and £899 for 16GB/512GB. Omdia’s July 2025 Smartphone Need-To-Know report also described a £799 UK starting price. These are historical launch-period figures, not current UK street prices. Nothing’s UK listing showed region-specific pricing, so do not convert the US display price or the launch pound figure into a current price for another country.

Pixel 9 pricing remains a live check

A current Pixel 9 price was not verified in the cited sources. That prevents a defensible universal claim that either phone is cheaper or offers better value today. Pixel 9 discounts, storage variants, refurbished condition, carrier bundles, and trade-in credits can change the comparison quickly.

Use this value checklist

Check Why it changes the decision
Country and currency Taxes, warranty rights, radio-band variants, and retail pricing differ by market.
Identical storage capacity Compare 256GB with 256GB where possible; do not treat a larger-capacity model as the same deal.
Condition New, open-box, refurbished, and used phones carry different battery and warranty risks.
Seller and warranty Official, carrier, and marketplace warranties may differ in duration and repair process.
Trade-in or contract terms A headline monthly payment can hide a required plan, bill credit schedule, or trade-in condition.
Support horizon Google’s documented seven-year period may be worth paying for if you keep phones for many years; Phone (3)’s comparable duration is unresolved here.
Camera role you actually use A periscope lens has value for distant subjects; Macro Focus or strong computational processing may matter more for close-ups and everyday snapshots.

Recheck both phones on the same date and in the same country before ordering. Record the exact storage tier, seller, warranty, condition, and any promotion. A £799 launch price from July 2025 and a discounted 2026 listing answer different questions and should not be presented as equivalent.

Which phone fits which buyer?

Choose the Nothing Phone (3) when camera versatility and screen area lead

  • You regularly photograph distant subjects and want a dedicated 3x optical camera instead of relying on the main camera’s crop.
  • You prefer a 6.67-inch display for reading, navigation, gaming, or split-screen work.
  • You want 256GB in the documented 12GB/256GB US configuration and have confirmed the live local price.
  • You are comfortable verifying Nothing’s current update policy directly before purchase because a duration is not established in the cited official material.

Choose the Pixel 9 when documented longevity and compact size lead

  • You plan to keep the phone for years and value Google’s stated seven years of OS, security, and Pixel Drop updates.
  • You prefer a 6.3-inch phone for one-handed use and easier pocket storage.
  • Your photography is mostly main-camera and ultrawide work, including close subjects where Macro Focus is useful, rather than frequent long-distance framing.
  • You have found a current Pixel 9 price that makes sense against the exact Phone (3) configuration available in your market.

When neither specification settles it

If your priorities are evenly split, make the decision with a short hands-on test: photograph a moving person indoors, a distant sign at matched framing, a close object, and a backlit face; scroll through a long web page; type one-handed; and inspect the update-policy pages. Those checks answer the practical questions that a specification list cannot.

Buying and setup checks before you pay

  1. Confirm the model name. Make sure the listing says Nothing Phone (3), not another Phone-series model, and Google Pixel 9, not Pixel 9 Pro or Pixel 9 Pro XL. The Pro models have different camera hardware.
  2. Match storage. Write down the capacity and memory configuration. The documented Phone (3) US price is specifically for 12GB/256GB; UK launch pricing included a separate 16GB/512GB tier.
  3. Verify regional compatibility. Check cellular bands, eSIM or physical-SIM requirements, wireless standards, and any carrier restrictions for your country.
  4. Read the warranty terms. Confirm who handles repairs, whether the seller is authorized, and what happens if the phone is imported.
  5. Check software status on arrival. Install available security and system updates, record the build number, and confirm that banking and workplace-management apps operate normally.
  6. Test every camera. Photograph a detailed daylight scene, a dim room, a close object, and a distant subject before the return period ends. Confirm that OIS and the periscope camera are available in the Phone (3) camera app, and test Macro Focus behavior on the Pixel 9.
  7. Recheck the long-term policy. Save Google’s seven-year statement for the Pixel 9. For Phone (3), seek a current Nothing support-duration statement if ownership length is important to you.

Bottom line

The Nothing Phone (3) is the more versatile camera platform on paper because it adds a stabilized 3x periscope lens to its 50MP main and ultrawide cameras, and it offers the larger 6.67-inch 120Hz display. The Google Pixel 9 counters with a compact 6.3-inch form factor and the clearer ownership promise: Google documents seven years of OS, security, and Pixel Drop updates from first US Google Store availability. The Phone (3)’s support duration and the Pixel 9’s current local price still require direct verification. Buy the Nothing when optical reach, screen space, and confirmed storage value outweigh that documentation gap; buy the Pixel when long-term update certainty and compact handling are worth more than a dedicated telephoto camera.
