Nothing OS 2.5.3 was a genuine March 2024 Android 14 update for the Nothing Phone (1). Nothing’s official changelog lists a new Recorder widget, animation improvements, an updated security patch and bug fixes; it does not promise universal discreet call recording. That behavior was reported by other sources, but user reports were mixed and availability may depend on region and software configuration.
What Nothing OS 2.5.3 changed
This is a historical Phone (1) release, not a current-update announcement. The device’s internal name is Spacewar, and the 2.5.3 build was Spacewar-U2.5-240301-1852. The firmware index identifies it as an Android 14 / Nothing OS 2.5 update for phones moving from 2.5.2 hotfix.
Nothing’s official community changelog lists these changes:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- A new Recorder widget.
- Smoother widget and app-opening animations, plus improved lock-screen and Always-On Display clock animation effects.
- An updated security patch; the changelog does not specify its patch date.
- Fixes for lock-screen widget flickering in some situations, text messages that failed to send in specific scenarios, and fingerprint-unlock flickering while Always-On Display was active.
The release was followed by 2.5.3.A, a separate later build. Firmware details and upgrade paths are listed in the Phone (1) firmware index and firmware archive documentation.

What the Recorder widget does—and what is not confirmed
Nothing’s changelog confirms a Recorder widget, which provides quicker access to recording from the home screen. It does not identify call recording as a separate feature or state that calls can always be recorded discreetly.
Secondary coverage described discreet call recording after the update, while community discussions include reports both of call-recording behavior and of the widget acting as a shortcut to the ordinary recorder. Those accounts do not establish that every Phone (1) on 2.5.3 gets the same function. Behavior may vary with the region, dialer implementation, carrier and software configuration. See the reported feature and installation coverage and the community discussion.
Do not treat technical availability as permission to record. Call-recording laws differ by jurisdiction; check the rules where you and the other participants are located, and obtain any consent required before recording.
2.5.3 and 2.5.3.A are different releases
| Release | Build | Listed upgrade path |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5.3 | Spacewar-U2.5-240301-1852 |
2.5.2 hotfix → 2.5.3 |
| 2.5.3.A | Spacewar-U2.5-240317-2245 |
2.5.3 → 2.5.3.A; 2.5.2 hotfix → 2.5.3.A |
These build numbers and paths are listed in the firmware index. An incremental OTA is tied to its source build: do not assume a 2.5.3 package intended for 2.5.2 hotfix will install from any other 2.5.x version. Do not substitute a 2.5.3.A package when you specifically need 2.5.3.
Check for the update and verify your build
- Open Settings → System → System update and check for available updates. Nothing said rollouts were usually staggered, so eligible phones could receive the OTA at different times.
- To check the installed build, the 2024 instructions used Settings → About phone → Software info. Menu names can differ on later Nothing OS versions.
Regional firmware variants matter. If the update does not appear, that alone does not mean the phone is incompatible. The official changelog notes staggered rollout, while the firmware index distinguishes regional versions.
OTA package listed for 2.5.3
The archive lists an EEA/GLOBAL incremental package for the 2.5.2 hotfix → 2.5.3 path:
- Version: 2.5.3
- Build:
Spacewar-U2.5-240301-1852 - Region: EEA/GLOBAL
- Package: incremental OTA ZIP mirror
This is an Archive.org mirror, not a Nothing-hosted download page. The firmware archive says its files were sourced from official OTA servers, but that statement does not make the mirror an official Nothing download. The available information does not establish a verified current Nothing-hosted direct link for the original full 2.5.3 package.

Before installing an OTA manually
Manual local installation is an advanced procedure. Use it only if you understand the source-build and region requirements; for most users, the built-in system updater is safer. Before proceeding, check that:
- The device is a Nothing Phone (1), not another Nothing model.
- You have identified its current software build and regional firmware variant.
- The package is for the correct region and is an incremental or full OTA appropriate to your starting build.
- The file is complete and from a source you trust; verify its hash if a reliable hash is available. No hash is provided here.
- You have backed up important data, sufficient free storage and adequate battery charge.
- The phone is running an unmodified stock system. Do not assume an OTA is suitable for a modified device.
An incremental OTA is usually smaller, but is intended for a specific starting build and may be rejected if the source build or regional variant does not match. A full OTA can be less dependent on the precise prior build, but it still must match the device and supported installation method. A full OTA is not a factory image or an unrestricted firmware-flashing package. The firmware index separates full and incremental packages and their source versions.
Local OTA installation steps
The following sequence comes from a contemporaneous third-party installation guide, not a guarantee of support for every later software configuration.
- Download the package that matches the Phone (1), region and current source build.
- Create a folder named
otaat the root of the phone’s internal storage, then copy the OTA ZIP into it. - Open the Phone app and enter
*#*#682#*#*. - In the local update tool, select the downloaded package. If it is not listed, tap Browse and choose the
otafolder. - Select Directly apply OTA from selection and reboot when prompted.
The steps are described in the installation guide. If the dialer code does nothing, use the normal system updater rather than forcing an installation. That guide mentions Activity Launcher or QuickShortcutMaker to locate the OfflineOTAUpgrade activity as an alternative, but this is an unofficially documented workaround whose availability can vary by region and app version.
Common installation and widget issues
- The OTA is not offered: Nothing described rollouts as staggered. Check again later through System update rather than installing a package for another build.
- The ZIP is missing in the local updater: Confirm the folder is named exactly
otaat internal-storage root, then use Browse to select it. - The updater rejects the package: Check the model, region, source build and package integrity. A mismatched or corrupted file is not a reason to try unrelated packages.
- The dialer code has no effect: Return to the built-in updater; the activity-launcher workaround is not guaranteed.
- The widget or call-recording option is absent: Community reports describe differences in widget visibility and Recorder behavior. Check for updates to Nothing Launcher and Nothing Recorder, but do not assume that every configuration exposes a call-recording control.
- The phone becomes unstable: Stop experimenting with other firmware packages and seek Nothing support before attempting further modifications.
Reports about missing widgets and regional behavior are anecdotal, not proof of a universal defect; examples appear in Nothing’s community discussion and user reports.
Should you install 2.5.3 now?
Because 2.5.3 dates to March 2024 and later Phone (1) firmware superseded it, it is mainly relevant for firmware archiving, a specific repair path or historical testing—not as the latest update. If your phone is working, prefer the newest compatible update offered through its system updater rather than downgrading to this archived release.
