Northrop Grumman’s FORTITUDE is a gallium nitride (GaN) radio-frequency chip designed to combine fast switching and signal filtering in one device. The company’s datasheet lists subnanosecond switching and an operating range from kHz to 20 GHz. The often-repeated claims of three times more power and 20 times better signal quality come from Northrop Grumman as reported by Interesting Engineering; the datasheet reviewed here does not include those comparisons or the measurement details needed to assess them.
What is the FORTITUDE GaN chip?
FORTITUDE is a Northrop Grumman RF component intended for commercial and defense systems. Rather than serving as a consumer chip or a complete radio, it is designed to handle two signal-processing tasks—switching and filtering—within one device. Northrop Grumman describes it as a way to guide electrical signals while suppressing interference. The company’s FORTITUDE datasheet and microelectronics product page present it as a component for larger systems.
GaN, or gallium nitride, is the semiconductor material at the heart of the device. Northrop Grumman says FORTITUDE uses patented multilayer “superlattice” technology: stacked, ultra-thin layers intended to control electron flow, reduce energy loss and heat, and support higher-frequency signals. The datasheet also describes combining GaN power characteristics with silicon architecture. These are manufacturer explanations; the sources cited here do not include an independent technical paper or test report.

Interesting Engineering’s October 2, 2026 report attributes both comparisons to Northrop Grumman: three times more power and 20 times better signal quality. Those figures are not stated in the Northrop Grumman datasheet reviewed for this article. The available sources do not identify the comparison baseline, measurement method, test conditions, or a signal-quality metric. They should therefore be read as company-reported claims, not as independently verified performance results.

- TRUE MONOBLOCK - ONE AMP POWERS ONE SPEAKER: This is a single-channel power amplifier. Use one amplifier for one passive speaker. A standard Left + Right stereo system requires two amplifiers. Package includes one amplifier only.
- Designed for Modern Desktop HiFi : Built for Mac mini setups, DACs, streamers, audio interfaces, near-field listening and passive bookshelf speakers, GaN Mono keeps your system compact, clean and organized without giving up the power and control expected from a serious HiFi amplifier.
- XLR/TRS + RCA Connectivity : Connect professional and home audio sources with ease. Balanced XLR/TRS and unbalanced RCA inputs work with DACs, preamps, streamers and audio interfaces, while selectable high/low gain helps match different source output levels.
- Smart Power Control : Choose the way your system powers on: 12V Trigger for synced DAC/preamp control, Auto mode for signal-based standby and wake, or manual FUNC key operation. Adjustable Auto sensitivity helps fine-tune daily use across different source devices.
- Cool, Silent & Desk-Friendly : Enjoy long listening sessions with a fanless design, 95% efficiency, 0.2W standby power, 5-level LED brightness and a compact metal enclosure. GaN Mono is made for close-range desktop listening where low heat, low distraction and quiet operation matter.
The datasheet does make a different comparison: Northrop Grumman says FORTITUDE carries ten times the charge of standard GaN chips. That, too, is a manufacturer claim; the cited material does not define “standard” or supply the underlying test conditions.
How can one chip switch and filter signals?
Switching controls signal paths
A switch controls whether a signal passes through a path or is redirected. In an RF system, rapid switching can help control when or where signals travel. Northrop Grumman lists subnanosecond switching speeds for FORTITUDE, but the datasheet extract does not specify the test method or operating conditions behind that figure.

- GaN Amplifier: Equipped with the latest GaN power transistors, the PA400 delivers pristine power, 250 W per channel into 4 Ω in stereo mode, and 500 W into 4 Ω in mono. effortlessly driving the vast majority of loudspeakers
- Dual Operation Modes: Stereo balanced-input mode: when used with a pre-amplifier, the fully balanced topology reveals finer detail and a purer sonic texture. XLR mono-bridge mode: two PA400 units work in tandem, quadrupling output power, ideal for demanding loudspeakers while adding vocal warmth and greater body
- XLR Mono Mode: With both units operating in tandem, background noise is further suppressed and soundstage depth, width and resolution are all enhanced. Whether powering floor-standers in a home-theater setup or hi-fi speakers in a personal listening room, the PA400 meets the acoustic demands of large spaces with ease
- Comprehensive Connectivity: RCA, XLR and XLR-Mono inputs allow simple hook-up to any DAC’s RCA or XLR outputs, ensuring compatibility with virtually every DAC on the market and the faithful reproduction of clean, transparent audio
- Premium Aluminum Construction: The chassis is milled from aerospace-grade aluminum on precision CNC machines, creating a unibody structure that is both ultra-rigid and an excellent heat sink. providing the stable, interference-free foundation required for true high-fidelity sound
Filtering suppresses unwanted frequencies
A filter selects or suppresses parts of a signal’s frequency content. That can help limit interference or unwanted signals reaching the next part of a system. Northrop Grumman says FORTITUDE performs filtering and switching simultaneously. Combining these jobs may reduce the need for separate components in some designs, but the available reporting does not establish a universal component-count reduction.
