A Northrop Grumman collaborative robot is helping technicians install bolts on the front housing of an F-35 avionics module. The company’s reports, published September 30 and October 2, 2026, say the task that once took hours now takes a few minutes. The robot assists the assembly team; it is not described as an unattended replacement for it.

What the F-35 co-bot does

It installs bolts on the CNI module

The robot works on the Communications, Navigation and Identification (CNI) avionics module, installing bolts that attach its front housing. Northrop Grumman manufacturing manager Lavell Catlin described the installation this way: “We recently installed a co-bot that assists technicians to precisely install bolts to attach the front housing area of the Communications, Navigation and Identification (CNI) module.”

What “hours to minutes” means

Northrop Grumman’s September–October 2026 reports characterize the time for this bolt-installation task as falling from hours to a few minutes. They do not give an exact old or new cycle time, explain whether the comparison includes setup or other assembly work, or report a measured increase in monthly output. Treat the figure as a reported task-time improvement, not a claim that the entire module or aircraft now takes minutes to assemble.

The robot assists technicians rather than replacing the assembly team

Northrop Grumman describes the co-bot as assisting technicians, and the same reporting says employees were shifted to other key manufacturing efforts. That supports a narrower conclusion than either “the robot replaced the team” or “no work changed”: the installation task was automated with technician support, and workers were reassigned elsewhere.

The reports do not identify the US plant or the robot’s manufacturer and model. They also do not publish its purchase price, a formal return-on-investment calculation, defect-rate change, or reduction in safety incidents. Without those details, the time claim cannot by itself establish the installation’s full financial, quality, or safety impact.

How this fits the wider F-35 factory

The CNI installation is one specific task within a broader human-machine production system. Lockheed Martin describes its advanced-manufacturing approach as combining robotics, artificial intelligence and augmented reality to improve production speed and quality. Other published examples involve different work, sites and measures; their figures should not be treated as results from the Northrop Grumman co-bot.

Example Reported measure Scope and qualification
Northrop Grumman CNI co-bot Hours to a few minutes Reported September–October 2026; bolt installation on the CNI module’s front housing.
Automated drilling across F-35 partners About four times the speed of manual drilling; 20% of total holes drilled with automation Defense.info’s 2018 account of an F-35 digital-thread presentation; it also describes a metrology-assisted Northrop Grumman robot for narrow inlets.
Forward-fuselage automation Labor fell from 132 to 98 hours per unit: 34 hours, or 26% Fastems supplier case study; publication date is not shown on the retrieved page. The example concerns the F-35 forward-fuselage line, not CNI bolt installation.
Fort Worth assembly line 300 workstations, 50 robots and 4,000 humans PBS documentary description of the line; the page date is not shown. It says robots handle work such as fastener installation and coating, freeing mechanics for craft work.

Automation includes drilling and material handling

The drilling example illustrates that factory automation can take on repeatable operations beyond bolt installation. Fastems describes another distinct application: a load, unload and skin-installation station on the forward-fuselage line, where one worker can move a fuselage section in two or three minutes by pressing a button. Brian Sykes, the F-35 forward fuselage lead specialist quoted in the case study, said the team works with the system “to reduce time, increase accuracy, and improve safety.” Those are benefits reported for that supplier case study, not independently quantified outcomes for the CNI co-bot.

The production setting is also not new: the U.S. Government Accountability Office reported that the F-35 achieved full-rate production in March 2024. That milestone provides program context, but it does not quantify the effect of this later installation.

What the reports establish—and what they do not

The available account establishes a defined task, a reported reduction in its duration, and a technician-assistive role. It does not establish the exact plant, robot model, output gain, installation cost, defect-rate effect, safety-incident reduction, or formal return on investment. Those missing details matter when comparing factory deployments: task scope, human involvement, the basis for cycle-time comparisons, quality and safety measures, worker reassignment, and disclosure of site and equipment all affect what a headline efficiency figure can tell you.
