The North Tarrant Express (NTE) Capacity Improvement Project was declared complete on September 24, 2026, ahead of its early-2027 target, according to TEXpress Highways’ announcement carried by The Business Press. The $414 million project added free general-purpose lanes to part of Loop 820 and tolled TEXpress managed lanes to part of Airport Freeway. It is a separate project from the NTE work completed in 2014 and the I-35W phase completed in 2023.

Which North Tarrant Express project finished early?

The milestone announced in September 2026 concerns a capacity-improvement project on SH 183/121 Airport Freeway and I-820—not the original North Tarrant Express project. TEXpress Highways said construction began in late 2023 and was completed September 24, 2026, before an early-2027 scheduled finish. The announcement gives the project cost as $414 million and says it was funded through toll revenues, with no public-sector or taxpayer funding for design and construction. That is the project’s stated funding account, not an independently audited financial finding.

The announcement describes the work as spanning 10 miles of the Airport Freeway and Loop 820 corridors between Euless and Fort Worth, through six Northeast Tarrant County municipalities. The 2026 announcement was reproduced by The Business Press as a press release.

Which lanes were added, and where?

The project added two different kinds of lanes on distinct segments. A free general-purpose lane was added in each direction on Loop 820; a TEXpress managed lane was added in each direction on Airport Freeway.

How is this different from the earlier NTE milestones?

North Tarrant Express refers to multiple projects and phases, so the completion dates are not interchangeable. TxDOT’s historical project pages distinguish the original I-820/SH 121/183 work and the later I-35W phase from the 2026 capacity improvements.

Original I-820/SH 121/183 NTE project TxDOT describes a 13-mile project from I-35W to the SH 121 split, costing $2.1 billion and adding four TEXpress lanes, frontage roads, and auxiliary lanes while approximately doubling existing capacity. Substantial completion in October 2014, nine months ahead of schedule, according to TxDOT.
NTE I-35W phase US 81/287 to Eagle Parkway; a project cost is not stated on the cited TxDOT page. Substantial completion in June 2023, three months early, according to TxDOT.
2026 I-820/Airport Freeway capacity improvements 10 miles across Airport Freeway and Loop 820; $414 million, according to the completion announcement. Completion announced September 24, 2026, ahead of an early-2027 target, according to the announcement carried by The Business Press.

What do the traffic and speed figures mean?

The announcement says average daily traffic has grown by more than 25% since pre-construction levels in 2009. It also reports average peak-rush-hour speeds of 45 mph in general-purpose lanes and 70 mph in TEXpress managed lanes. These are figures supplied in the project announcement; it does not provide an independent measurement method, and they should not be read as a guarantee of travel speeds on a particular trip.

Who delivered the project?

The completion announcement names North Tarrant Infrastructure as construction manager and describes it as a Ferrovial Construction/Webber joint venture. TxDOT separately lists NTE Mobility Partners as developer for the original I-820 and SH 121/183 segments, and NTE Mobility Partners Segment 3 LLC for the I-35W segments. Those developer identities concern the earlier projects, not proof of the 2026 capacity project’s financing or delivery arrangements. TxDOT’s alternative-delivery page lists the earlier developer information at its North Tarrant Express page.
