Red Star OS is a North Korean-developed desktop operating system. Researchers who analyzed leaked samples of Desktop 3.0 reported that it could add identifiers to files to help trace their distribution and check the integrity of core system files and processes. Those findings describe a historical software sample—not a measured ranking of surveillance systems, proof of nationwide deployment, or confirmation of how a current release behaves.
What is Red Star OS?
Red Star OS is a desktop operating system developed in North Korea. ERNW’s analysis describes the leaked Desktop 3.0 release as a general-purpose system based on Fedora and KDE, with a visual style reminiscent of Mac OS X. It included applications such as email, a calendar, a word processor, and a media player. ERNW’s presentation says the latest package builds it examined were from 2013. ERNW’s 2017 presentation focuses on that historical release.
How did researchers say the desktop system tracked files?
Researchers reported that Red Star OS added identifiers to files, including media files, so that their distribution could be traced. Florian Grunow of ERNW described the reported file watermarking to The Guardian in 2015 as “definitely privacy invading” and “not transparent to the user.”

What did researchers find about system changes?
ERNW’s presentation describes integrity checks for core processes and files, as well as suspicious processes that could not be killed through ordinary means. The Guardian reported that changing core functions, including antivirus or firewall settings, could trigger an error or reboot in the analyzed system. Together, these observations point to resistance to certain changes—not proof that the operating system is secure against every attacker or impossible to modify. How are reported mobile controls different?
InterMedia’s Compromising Connectivity describes signature checks on North Korean mobile devices. These checks could restrict or remove files without an approved signature. That is a mobile-device mechanism involving approval and restriction or deletion; it is distinct from the desktop OS’s reported file identifiers, which were intended to help trace file distribution.

What do we know—and not know—about Red Star OS today?
The detailed desktop findings discussed here concern leaked Red Star OS Desktop 3.0 samples, with package builds dating to 2013. The Guardian reported that the researchers could not say how many computers ran the system. ERNW’s 2017 presentation also cautions that the researchers had not visited North Korea and that some statements about the country drew on other publications or speculation. The reviewed reporting does not establish current deployment levels or whether later versions behave the same way. The Guardian’s 2015 report and ERNW’s presentation provide those qualifications.
InterMedia’s report combines technical analysis with interviews and survey material, but it says its survey used a non-probability sample and is not statistically representative of North Korea’s population. Its participant numbers should not be read as a measure of Red Star OS users. InterMedia’s report explains the limits of its sample.

Is “government surveillance at its best” an accurate description?
It works as rhetorical phrasing, but the available evidence does not establish that Red Star OS is the world’s most effective surveillance system. Researchers described specific behaviors in a historical software sample; the sources do not quantify how often the system was deployed or how successfully its reported controls operated in practice.
