A video described by The Nerd Stash as showing a man in North Carolina wearing pink overalls and sucking on a pacifier drew online criticism, including a commenter’s remark that “Closing asylums was a bad idea.” The clip and the reactions do not establish who the man is, why he was dressed that way, or whether he has a mental-health condition.
What the North Carolina video reportedly shows
In an October 2, 2026 report, The Nerd Stash described a circulating video of a man wearing short pink overalls and using a pacifier while standing in what appeared to be a cafeteria or buffet line. The report identified X user Matt Van Swol as the person who shared it. Van Swol wrote: “I genuinely did not think people like this actually existed in real life, but apparently they 100% do…”
The venue description comes from the report; the precise location and the man’s identity were not established there. The clip, as described, offers no reliable explanation for his clothing or use of a pacifier. The Nerd Stash’s October 2 report also recorded critical replies, including the line “Closing asylums was a bad idea…”
What commenters claimed—and what the video establishes
The comments show how some viewers reacted to the clip. They are not evidence about the man. The report says the video did not substantiate serious accusations made in replies; those allegations should not be treated as fact or repeated as though an investigation had confirmed them.

Clothing and a pacifier cannot establish a diagnosis, dangerousness, criminal conduct, or a need for psychiatric care. The available account does not include an interview with the man, an independent eyewitness account, or confirmation from a clinician or law-enforcement agency.
Does the clip support claims about closing psychiatric facilities?
No. One short video and the reactions to it cannot demonstrate that a particular person needs institutional care or prove a claim about North Carolina’s facility history. The commenter’s statement is an opinion, not a verified account of when or why facilities in the state closed.

In its 2024 report, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) lists 369,969 residents in state and county psychiatric hospitals in 1970 and 90,572 in 1990. Across psychiatric inpatient and residential-care settings, the national total was 471,451 residents in 1970 and 226,953 in 1990. These are counts for the stated years, not findings about North Carolina’s policies or the causes of the changes. SAMHSA’s “From Crisis to Care” historical table tracks multiple settings; their counts did not all move in lockstep.
SAMHSA’s 2025 North Carolina Uniform Reporting System listing describes annual state reporting on mental-health outcomes, evidence-based practices, and service utilization. The listing alone does not establish a timeline of facility closures or a detailed account of current service gaps.
