Investors comparing North American Construction Group (NACG) with other mining contractors should focus on contract quality, geographic and customer mix, margins, fleet economics, cash conversion, and balance-sheet risk—not equipment counts or backlog alone. NACG operates mining, earthworks, heavy civil, equipment-rental, maintenance, and related services in Canada and Australia, so the closest comparisons are contractors with similar work and accounting, not heavy-equipment manufacturers.

What kind of business is NACG?

NACG is a contractor and equipment-services operator. Its subsidiaries and joint ventures perform contract mining and earthworks, mine-site heavy civil construction, maintained equipment rental, mine management, field maintenance, component remanufacturing, and equipment rebuilds. In Canada’s oil sands, work can include removing and handling muskeg, topsoil, and overburden; building mine infrastructure and haul roads; supporting tailings operations; hauling ore; and completing reclamation and stream-diversion work. These services expose NACG to mine operators’ activity and contract economics rather than primarily to sales of manufactured equipment.

The company also has meaningful joint-venture exposure. NACG holds 49% interests in Mikisew North American Limited Partnership (MNALP) and Nuna Group of Companies. MNALP is an oil-sands contractor that subcontracts work to NACG; Nuna operates in Nunavut and the Northwest Territories and has project work elsewhere in Canada. NACG also participates in the Fargo-Moorhead flood-diversion project through joint ventures. Investors should distinguish this project and JV exposure from recurring mine-services activity, and check whether a peer consolidates JV revenue or reports its share through equity accounting.

How diversified is NACG’s revenue?

NACG’s 2026 Annual Information Form (AIF), dated March 11, 2026, reports the following shares of 2025 revenue. The figures exclude NACG’s share of joint-venture revenue and are rounded, so they add to 101% rather than exactly 100%.

Reported segment Share of 2025 revenue Investor comparison point
Heavy Equipment–Australia 54% Assess country, customer, contract, and mine exposure within the Australian business.
Heavy Equipment–Canada 45% Separate oil-sands and other Canadian activity, including JV-related work, where disclosures permit.
Other 2% Check what each company includes in residual or unallocated categories.

Australia includes MacKellar and, in the period covered by NACG’s Q2 2026 filing, the acquired IMC business. That change in scope matters: reported growth after an acquisition is not automatically evidence of equivalent organic growth. Compare like-for-like periods when disclosures allow it, and identify how much reported change comes from acquired operations.

What do backlog and contract terms tell investors?

NACG’s AIF reported contractual backlog of C$4.0 billion after an amended and extended Australian contract in 2025. Backlog can indicate revenue visibility, but it is not cash on hand, guaranteed revenue in every circumstance, or a measure of expected profit. Its value depends on what work is committed, when it is scheduled, how it is priced, and what rights each party has to change or end the arrangement.

For NACG and any peer, inspect the definition of backlog and the contract terms behind it. A long headline duration is less informative if minimum volumes are weak, pricing is exposed to cost inflation, or termination rights are broad. NACG says customers sometimes consolidate contractors, enter longer-term agreements with committed volumes, and add bidders to put pressure on pricing. That makes renewal and rebidding risk relevant even when backlog is substantial.

Did Q2 2026 growth improve NACG’s profitability?

No: the reported combined revenue increase came with a lower adjusted EBITDA margin. NACG’s unaudited Q2 2026 results, for the quarter ended June 30 and filed August 12, 2026, show the following company-reported combined measures:

Measure Q2 2026 Q2 2025 or year-over-year comparison
Combined revenue C$456.1 million Up 23% year over year
Adjusted EBITDA C$93.5 million C$80.1 million in Q2 2025
Adjusted EBITDA margin 20.5% 21.6% in Q2 2025

Management said IMC contributed C$90.6 million of combined revenue and C$13.1 million of adjusted EBITDA in Q2 2026, and that its lower margin diluted the blended margin. Management also said the legacy business’s adjusted EBITDA margin, excluding IMC, was consistent with Q2 2025. This is an important distinction when judging whether growth reflects the performance of existing operations, acquired scale, or both.

Combined measures also require care because JV revenue is equity-accounted rather than included in consolidated revenue in the same way. When comparing NACG with a contractor that consolidates joint ventures—or one that reports only consolidated results—align the accounting basis before comparing revenue, margins, or growth rates.

How should investors read NACG’s 2026 outlook?

In its August 12, 2026 filing, management raised its full-year 2026 outlook. These are forward-looking company estimates, not results already earned.

2026 measure Management outlook issued August 12, 2026
Combined revenue C$1.6–1.8 billion; midpoint C$1.7 billion
Adjusted EBITDA C$380–420 million
Free cash flow C$110–130 million

Use guidance to frame scenarios, not as a substitute for reported performance. In particular, examine the assumptions, definitions, and reconciliation provided for the company’s non-GAAP and supplemental measures. NACG’s CEO, Barry Palmer, wrote in the Q2 filing: “The inflection point is not simply greater scale, but our ability to translate that scale into improved performance and durable value.” That is management’s stated view of the challenge, not independent evidence that future performance will improve.

How much does fleet scale matter?

NACG reported 1,155 owned and leased heavy-equipment units across its segments and joint ventures as of December 31, 2025, excluding rented equipment. Its AIF says many of its mining trucks exceed 240 tons in capacity. These figures establish operating scale, but by themselves they do not show that the fleet is more productive or earns better returns than a peer’s.

Compare how equipment is financed and used, not just the fleet count. Owned equipment may require substantial replacement capital; leases create payment commitments; rented units can add flexibility but change cost structure. Fleet age, availability, utilization, maintenance capability, and rebuild costs help explain whether nominal capacity can be deployed profitably. Also distinguish sustaining capital needed to preserve operations from growth capital for new work.

Which financial measures make peer comparisons fair?

Start with reported operating income, net income, cash flow, capital expenditures, working capital, and debt service. Then use adjusted EBITDA, adjusted EBITDA margin, or free cash flow as supplementary measures only after checking each company’s definitions and reconciliations. NACG warns that its non-GAAP measures have analytical limitations and should not be considered in isolation or as substitutes for US GAAP measures.

Cash conversion is especially important for contractors with large fleets and mobilization needs. A company can report positive EBITDA while still facing heavy replacement spending, working-capital outflows, or material cash interest and debt repayments. For NACG and its peers, compare free cash flow after sustaining capital expenditure, working-capital movements, cash interest, debt maturities, leverage definitions, and covenant headroom. If a peer’s adjusted EBITDA excludes different items, direct margin comparisons may be misleading.

What operating risks should the comparison include?

  • Geographic and customer exposure: Compare countries, mine types, commodity and customer concentration, and the relative contribution of joint ventures.
  • Execution and labour: Review safety, labour availability, operating conditions, and the ability to mobilize equipment and people on schedule.
  • Seasonality: NACG’s AIF says Nuna activity generally peaks from June through September. Compare results over full years or matched quarters rather than assuming every quarter has the same operating pattern.
  • Project mix: Separate recurring mine-services work from episodic heavy-civil projects, such as flood-diversion work, because timing and project execution can affect reported results differently.
  • Utilization and maintenance: Consider equipment availability, maintenance and rebuild capacity, subcontracting, and whether a contractor can keep its fleet productive through changing demand.

Which companies belong in the peer set?

Choose peers based on what they do, where they operate, and how they report—not simply because they are associated with mining. The relevant comparison group should provide contract mining, mine-site earthworks, heavy civil services, or maintained mining fleets at a reasonably comparable scale and in relevant markets. Equipment manufacturers such as Caterpillar are not direct contractor peers merely because they supply mining machinery.

The reviewed NACG filings do not establish a standardized peer set or a comparable peer financial table. Before naming a company as a direct peer, check its filings for the share of revenue from contract mining or earthworks, geographic and customer mix, fleet model, JV accounting, and the definitions of its financial measures. If those fundamentals differ, it may be useful as a broader industry reference but not as a clean valuation or operating benchmark.

A practical NACG comparison checklist

  1. Align the period and currency. Use comparable fiscal periods and convert or clearly label currencies; NACG’s AIF figures are in Canadian dollars unless noted otherwise.
  2. Map the business mix. Separate contract mining, heavy civil, rentals and maintenance, acquisitions, and JV contributions.
  3. Test revenue visibility. Read backlog definitions and contract terms, including volumes, pricing, duration, renewal, termination, and rebidding exposure.
  4. Compare operating economics. Review reported earnings alongside adjusted margins, then account for acquisitions and consolidation differences.
  5. Assess fleet returns and reinvestment. Compare ownership, leasing and rentals, age, utilization, maintenance, and sustaining versus growth spending.
  6. Follow cash and debt. Check working capital, free cash flow after sustaining capital, interest, maturities, leverage, and covenant capacity.
  7. Stress execution assumptions. Consider seasonality, labour, safety, weather and operating conditions, and project timing.
