Nortel Networks agreed in March 2000 to acquire CoreTek, a Massachusetts maker of MEMS-based tunable lasers and detectors, for up to $1.43 billion in Nortel common shares. The technology was intended to help Nortel build higher-capacity optical networks; CoreTek’s laser operations were later closed, and Nortel’s optical-components business was sold to Bookham in 2002.
Which tunable-laser company did Nortel buy?
Nortel announced its agreement to acquire CoreTek on March 22–23, 2000. CoreTek was based in Wilmington, Massachusetts, and made microelectromechanical systems (MEMS)-based tunable lasers, detectors and related optical components for fiber-optic transmission.
The announced consideration was up to $1.43 billion in Nortel common shares, not a stated cash purchase price. The amount was reported in contemporary coverage by Photonics Spectra and the Los Angeles Times.
Why did Nortel want tunable lasers?
Tunable lasers can be set to operate at different wavelengths. In fiber-optic networks, wavelength flexibility can support the transmission of more information over optical infrastructure. Nortel positioned CoreTek’s components as part of its plan to increase network capacity and move toward an all-optical Internet.

- Operating voltage: 5V
- Source wavelength: 650 nm
- Apply to: for Arduino AVR
- Model: 1*Laser Receiver Sensor Module+ 1* KY-008 Laser Transmitter Module
- Laser Receiver Sensor Module uses the non modulated laser receiver, please use in the room where without the light, the sunlight or other lamps and lanterns will interfere, suggested in the dark environment use.
Nortel said the technology was designed for 10-Gbit/s systems, with a path toward 40- and 80-Gbit/s systems. Clarence Chandran, then president of Nortel’s Service Provider and Carrier Group, described CoreTek’s role this way: “CoreTek’s capabilities are an important building block in our vision to transform today’s Internet into the all-optical Internet of tomorrow.”
Nortel also presented CoreTek as complementary to its Qtera acquisition and proposed acquisition of Xros, combining optical-networking capabilities with components intended for faster transmission.

What product work followed the acquisition?
Nortel’s 2001 report described development of a tunable-laser Laser Locker Card. It used an optical feedback loop to lock the laser to a wavelength. Nortel projected a revenue contribution by the fourth quarter of 2002; that projection does not establish that the product reached commercial sales.

A Nortel technology-history report from the University of Ottawa says Nortel had closed the CoreTek laser operations by September 2002. In November 2002, Bookham acquired Nortel’s optical-components business. Bookham’s SEC-filed report later recorded total consideration of $119.0 million for that transaction. That amount applies to the optical-components business sale, not to Nortel’s original CoreTek purchase.
