Choose NordPass if you want a managed vault that syncs across devices; choose KeePass if you want direct control over an encrypted database file and are willing to manage its backups and synchronization. Neither is a universal security winner: both document substantial protections, but named algorithms alone do not establish which is safer in practice.

How storage and synchronization differ
NordPass: managed vault access
NordPass says vault data is encrypted locally before upload and describes its system as zero-knowledge. Its security page outlines XChaCha20-Poly1305-IETF to protect the private key locally, Argon2id with a 16-byte salt to derive a master key, and public-key cryptography to protect the vault data-encryption key. These are NordPass’s published architecture claims, not independent audit findings. NordPass security documentation
This approach suits someone who wants synchronized access without designing a separate file-sync workflow. It also means relying on NordPass’s service and account-access model.
KeePass: a database file you control
KeePass stores passwords, usernames, URLs, and notes in an encrypted database file that can be transferred between computers. You decide where that file lives and how it is copied or synchronized. That control can be useful, but you must plan for reliable backups and keep every device’s database version coordinated. KeePass features

If you use a key file as part of the unlock process, protect and back it up separately as appropriate. Losing a required key file can make the database inaccessible; storing it carelessly can undermine the separation it was meant to provide.
What the encryption details do—and do not—tell you
The products describe different cryptographic components, and KeePass documentation also distinguishes editions. KeePass 2.x lists AES-256 and ChaCha20 for database encryption. The features page describes Twofish support in KeePass 1.x and notes that plugins can add algorithms; do not treat those as one identical default across every KeePass version. KeePass 2.x documents AES-KDF and Argon2 key-derivation options. Its guidance explains that derivation settings trade the time required to open or save a database against the cost of password guessing, and recommends testing parameters on all intended devices. The project’s current documentation recommends Argon2d for the desktop database use case it describes, while noting situations where Argon2id may be preferable. Treat this as KeePass’s product guidance, not a universal cryptographic rule. KeePass security documentation

Key files, account MFA, and recovery
KeePass unlock components
KeePass lets users combine a master password, a key file, or both; KeePass 2.x also documents binding a database to the current Windows user account. More choices mean more control, but also more responsibility: determine how each required component will be protected and recovered before relying on it. KeePass features
NordPass security-key MFA
NordPass documents FIDO2/U2F security keys as an optional factor for account MFA and lists YubiKey as a supported example. This is an added account-protection step, not a requirement for storing passwords. Confirm that a key’s connector and model work with your devices before choosing one. NordPass security-key MFA

Choose KeePass if you want control over the file
- You want a free, open-source desktop password manager whose source is available for inspection and compilation.
- You want to choose how the database is stored and transferred.
- You are prepared to maintain synchronization, backups, and any key-file recovery plan yourself.

If security is the deciding factor
Compare the whole workflow rather than “cloud” versus “local” or one algorithm list against another. Consider master-secret strength, the safety and update status of your devices, backup and recovery, sharing needs, and whether you can maintain the setup consistently. A local database can still be exposed on an insecure device or lost without backups; a managed service still depends on its account and service protections.
