Non Negotiable—released in Mexico as No Negociable—is a 2024 Mexican comedy thriller about a hostage negotiator whose professional crisis becomes a brutally personal one. Alan Bender must rescue Mexico’s kidnapped president, but the kidnapper eventually adds Bender’s wife and her lover to the hostage situation.
That deliberately chaotic premise helped the film become one of Netflix’s most visible international titles in late July and early August 2024. The “holding Netflix’s Top 10 hostage” description is a pun on the plot, not a claim that the movie is still ranked there today.
What is Non Negotiable about?
Alan Bender, played by Mauricio Ochmann, is introduced as Mexico’s best hostage negotiator. His expertise is useful in a national emergency: Mexico’s president, Francisco Araiza, has been kidnapped, along with the president’s mistress.

But Bender’s personal life is already collapsing. During couples therapy, he discovers that his wife, Victoria, has been having an affair with her personal trainer, Nico. When the kidnapper—who calls himself Lamb—brings Victoria and Nico into the crisis, Bender is forced to manage two kinds of hostage situation at once: a politically explosive kidnapping and the emotional wreckage of his marriage.

The film’s central joke is therefore built into its structure. Bender is expected to remain calm, read people, and negotiate under pressure, yet the people he most needs to understand are the ones closest to him. The result is a comedy thriller that moves between presidential danger, marital conflict, action, and deliberately broad humor.
The title has two versions
The film’s original Spanish title is No Negociable. Netflix released it internationally under the English title Non Negotiable. Both titles point toward Bender’s profession and the movie’s recurring idea that some demands—or some relationships—cannot be compromised.
Netflix classifies the movie as Mexican, comedy, and thriller. That combination is important to set expectations: this is not presented as a realistic political hostage drama. Its appeal comes from the collision between a high-stakes public emergency and an intensely messy private problem.

Why did Non Negotiable become a Netflix talking point?
The film’s Netflix performance was stronger than its critical reputation. Contemporary tracking reported that Non Negotiable overtook Find Me Falling to become Netflix’s No. 1 movie worldwide around July 31, 2024. That specific ranking came from FlixPatrol reporting, not a directly retrieved Netflix lifetime-performance announcement, so it is best treated as a dated observation rather than an official all-time Netflix milestone.

Those figures explain the headline without overstating it. The movie was a genuine international Top 10 performer during its 2024 release window, but there is no basis for saying that it remains in Netflix’s Top 10 in 2026. Netflix rankings are specific to a chart, country or territory, week, and measurement period.
A hit with mixed reviews
Non Negotiable illustrates the difference between streaming visibility and critical acclaim. Rotten Tomatoes listed the film at 17% on the Tomatometer from six critics and 38% from fewer than 50 audience ratings at the time of retrieval.
The limited review sample should be kept in mind, but the general criticism is clear: reviewers found the movie broad and uneven, particularly when it shifts between marital comedy, political kidnapping, and action. Those tonal changes are also central to the film’s appeal for viewers who enjoy fast, high-concept entertainment.
A fair description is “a popular Netflix comedy thriller with mixed reviews,” not “a universally acclaimed thriller.” Its chart performance shows that audiences gave it substantial attention; it does not prove that the film was one of Netflix’s best-reviewed releases.

Release date, runtime, and where to watch
Where to watch Non Negotiable
Netflix Tudum states that the film became available to stream on July 26, 2024. Netflix’s title page lists an approximately 1-hour-27-minute runtime and supports offline downloads. A U.S. availability check also listed it on Netflix, including Netflix Standard with Ads, with an approximately 86-minute runtime and a PG-13 classification.
Catalogs, plans, ratings, subtitles, and audio options can change by country and over time. Before watching, check where Non Negotiable is streaming in your region and confirm the plan or language options shown on your local service page.
The difference between the listed 86-minute runtime and the approximately 1-hour-27-minute runtime is only a matter of rounding or regional listing conventions. Neither should be treated as evidence of a different cut without additional confirmation.
Is the movie based on a book or a true story?
No. Netflix Tudum states that Non Negotiable is entirely fictional and is not based on a book. The president, hostage crisis, negotiator, and family situation belong to the film’s invented story.

Who should watch it?
This is a good choice for viewers who want a relatively short international Netflix movie with a simple high-concept hook and a mix of suspense and comedy. It may work particularly well if you enjoy stories in which a professional who is excellent at handling strangers cannot manage the problems in their own home.
It is a less obvious choice for anyone seeking a grounded hostage-negotiation procedural, a serious political thriller, or a carefully controlled tonal experience. The plot intentionally escalates from a presidential kidnapping to a deeply awkward domestic crisis, and the humor can be broad.

The Bottom Line
Non Negotiable became a Netflix conversation piece because its high-concept premise is easy to understand: Mexico’s top hostage negotiator must save the president while dealing with the kidnapping of his wife and her lover. Its 2024 chart performance was real, but its mixed reviews and changing catalog status make it best described as a widely watched, lightly chaotic comedy thriller—not a critical classic or a permanently ranked Netflix hit.
