Nocturne is based on both Lars Kepler novels, not a screen adaptation of just one. Apple’s July announcement names The Sandman and Lazarus; its later trailer announcement puts more emphasis on The Sandman. The series brings their shared characters and crime-story threads to western Pennsylvania, with Liev Schreiber playing Jonah Lynn, a reworked version of Joona Linna.

When does Nocturne arrive, and what is it about?

Apple TV’s 10-episode crime thriller premieres globally on October 30, 2026. The first two episodes are scheduled to arrive together, followed by one new episode each Friday through December 25. Apple classifies the series as TV-MA and lists its genre as crime/thriller.

In Apple’s official premise, Jonah Lynn is an ex-soldier and homicide detective who leaves Philadelphia for a quieter life in a small western Pennsylvania town. When serial killer Jurek Walter threatens Jonah’s family and community, the search for Walter’s last missing victim leads Jonah to send Saga Bauer—his surrogate daughter and an FBI agent—into the confrontation.

John Hlavin developed the series for television, writing, executive producing and serving as showrunner. Rowan Joffé created it for television and also writes and executive produces. Tim Van Patten directs the first two episodes. The announced cast includes Schreiber, Zazie Beetz as Saga Bauer and Stephen Graham as Jurek Walter, alongside Bill Camp, Rory Culkin, Chrissy Metz, Poorna Jagannathan and Gary Carr.

What does The Sandman contribute?

The Sandman supplies the story’s central Jurek Walter and missing-survivor investigation. In Lars Kepler’s official synopsis, an emaciated young man is found on a train track 13 years after being presumed one of Walter’s victims. His sister is still missing, and investigators believe Walter may know what happened to her.

Penguin Random House identifies the survivor as Mikael Kohler-Frost and describes Walter as imprisoned in a maximum-security psychiatric hospital. Joona Linna and Saga Bauer go undercover to get close to him and uncover what he knows. Apple’s announced premise similarly centers on finding Walter’s last missing victim and puts Saga into the dangerous investigation.

What does Lazarus contribute?

Lazarus adds a revenge-linked murder investigation rooted in Joona’s past. Kepler’s official synopsis describes a killer targeting Europe’s most loathsome criminals; two victims have unsettling connections to Joona, making the murders appear to be a message aimed at him. Penguin Random House’s description likewise connects murders from Joona’s past with a criminal mastermind and Saga’s help.

Apple has not published a scene-by-scene account of how that plot is incorporated into Nocturne. The connection between Lazarus and the show is confirmed at the source-novel level, but assigning particular scenes or episodes to that book would go beyond the announced information.

How the two novels fit together

The clearest way to understand the adaptation is as a shared character-and-crime story world, rather than a direct transfer of one book’s plot. Apple names both novels as sources, while its series synopsis foregrounds the missing-victim and Jurek Walter conflict associated with The Sandman.

Novel What its official synopsis establishes How it relates to Nocturne
The Sandman A presumed-dead survivor reappears; Joona and Saga go undercover to reach imprisoned Jurek Walter and find the survivor’s missing sister. Its missing-survivor, Jurek and undercover-investigation elements align with Apple’s announced central conflict.
Lazarus A killer targets notorious criminals, including two with disturbing ties to Joona; the murders seem directed at him. Apple names the novel as a source, but has not specified which plot events or scenes carry over.

The table describes the novels’ published premises and the connection indicated by Apple’s announcements; it is not a confirmed episode-by-episode adaptation map.

What has changed from the books?

Albert Bonniers Förlag, Lars Kepler’s publisher, confirms several changes for the television version:

  • Joona Linna becomes Jonah Lynn. Schreiber’s Jonah is a Pennsylvania homicide detective and former soldier, adapted from the Swedish detective Joona.
  • The setting moves to the United States. The show places the story in western Pennsylvania, with Jonah leaving Philadelphia for a small town.
  • Saga’s job changes. Beetz plays Saga Bauer as an FBI agent. The publisher describes the television character as inspired by the book character, rather than presenting the role as unchanged.

The source announcements establish those broad translations, but do not provide a complete account of how faithfully the show follows each novel or how it combines their plots across ten episodes. Any finer comparison will depend on the episodes themselves.

Should you read The Sandman or Lazarus first?

You do not need to read either book to follow Apple’s announced premise: it introduces Jonah, Saga, Jurek and the missing-victim search. Reading first is most useful if you want the novels’ own versions of the characters and investigations, rather than a prerequisite for watching.

  • Choose The Sandman first if you are most interested in Jurek Walter, the survivor’s missing sister and the undercover approach to Walter in a psychiatric institution.
  • Choose Lazarus first if Joona’s past and a sequence of revenge-linked murders are the stronger draw.

Those are reading recommendations based on the novels’ official synopses, not claims about which scenes will appear in the finished series.
