The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine recognizes discoveries in physiology or medicine, but it is not the only major award for biomedical work. The Lasker Awards distinguish basic research, clinical advances and public service; the Shaw Prize covers biomedical discoveries and clinical-medicine innovation; the Breakthrough Prize recognizes life-sciences contributions broadly; and the Japan Prize’s medical remit changes by award year. Their criteria overlap, but they do not form a published or objective prestige ranking.

How the awards differ

The clearest way to compare these prizes is by what each is designed to recognize: its subject area, the kind of contribution it rewards, and any emphasis on recent work or a particular disease. The distinctions below are based on the programs’ published remits and official award information.

Award What it recognizes What makes it distinct Recent example or detail
Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine Discoveries in physiology or medicine. The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet makes the award. Its subject can include fundamental biology with medical relevance. In 2025, Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi received the prize “for their discoveries concerning peripheral immune tolerance.” Official 2025 citation
Lasker Awards Basic medical discovery, clinical advances, special achievement in medical science and public service connected with medical research, public health or health care. Separate categories distinguish discovery from clinical translation and public service; international juries select awardees. The Lasker Foundation says its Bloomberg Public Service Award is next offered in 2028. Lasker award categories and schedule
Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine Biomedical-science discoveries and innovations in clinical medicine. Its general principle emphasizes recent distinguished advances and recognizes people who remain active in their fields. The 2025 award recognized Wolfgang Baumeister’s work on cryogenic-electron tomography. The category page lists 42 laureates from 2004 through 2025. Shaw laureates
Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences Major contributions across the life sciences. The rules give special attention to recent developments and designate one annual prize for Parkinson’s disease and neurodegenerative disorders. Awards may go to individuals jointly or to collaborations. The prize’s rules describe its broad remit and recent-work emphasis. Breakthrough Prize rules
Japan Prize Original and outstanding achievements in science and technology that advance knowledge and serve peace and prosperity; eligible fields vary over time. Its rotating fields mean the relevant medical remit depends on the award year. For 2027, Medical Science and Pharmacological Science covers disease mechanisms and advances in prevention, diagnosis, treatment or prognosis. In 2026, the Life Sciences award recognized Shizuo Akira and Zhijian Chen for work on nucleic-acid sensing in innate immunity. Japan Prize fields and areas 2026 Japan Prize laureates

What the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine recognizes

“Nobel Prize in medicine” is common shorthand; the formal name is the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The category recognizes discoveries in physiology or medicine, including foundational biological work when its relevance to medicine is clear. The 2025 citation for Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi illustrates this breadth: it honored discoveries concerning peripheral immune tolerance. Read the official 2025 announcement.

From 1901 through 2025, the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded 116 times to 232 laureates, according to Nobel Prize Outreach. That historical count describes the program; it is not a measure that can be fairly compared with counts from differently structured awards. Nobel Prize laureate list

Why the Lasker Awards separate categories

Lasker is a family of awards rather than a single-purpose prize. Its categories make it especially useful for distinguishing the stage or nature of a contribution:

  • Basic medical research: recognizes foundational discovery.
  • Clinical medical research: recognizes advances that improve the lives of many thousands.
  • Special achievement in medical science: recognizes sustained contributions to medical science.
  • Public service: recognizes service related to medical research, public health or health care.

A clinical advance and a basic discovery can both be important to medicine, but Lasker’s separate categories show that they are not the same type of achievement. Its current schedule says the Bloomberg Public Service Award is next offered in 2028. See the Lasker Foundation’s award information.

How the Shaw Prize and Breakthrough Prize define life-sciences work

Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine

The Shaw category encompasses both discoveries in biomedical science and innovations in clinical medicine. Its general principle favors recent, distinguished advances and laureates who remain active in their fields. Its 2025 example, Wolfgang Baumeister’s cryogenic-electron tomography work, shows that the remit can include methods that expand how scientists investigate biological structures, not only treatments or clinical interventions. The category page records 42 laureates from 2004 through 2025. View the Shaw category’s laureates.

Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences

The Breakthrough Prize uses a broad life-sciences remit. Its rules say it “recognizes major contributions to the field of life sciences, with special attention to recent developments.” They also designate one annual prize for Parkinson’s disease and neurodegenerative disorders. Awards can be shared by joint recipients or awarded to collaborations. Read the official rules.

Why the Japan Prize requires a year-specific comparison

The Japan Prize recognizes original and outstanding achievements in science and technology that advance knowledge and contribute to peace and prosperity. Its eligible fields rotate, so a general label such as “the medical Japan Prize” can obscure what is eligible in a given year.

For 2027, the field is Medical Science and Pharmacological Science. Its stated remit includes understanding disease mechanisms and advancing prevention, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. The 2026 Life Sciences award, by contrast, recognized Shizuo Akira and Zhijian Chen for contributions involving nucleic-acid sensing in innate immunity. How to compare awards without creating a false ranking

These awards overlap in honoring influential biomedical and life-sciences work, but their published criteria are not interchangeable. A useful comparison asks:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Scope: Is the award limited to physiology or medicine, broad life sciences, or a rotating science-and-technology field?
  • Contribution type: Does it distinguish foundational discovery, clinical advance, public service or broad scientific contribution?
  • Time emphasis: Do its published principles specify recent advances or special attention to recent developments?
  • Special categories: Does it separate types of contribution or reserve an award for a disease area?
  • Year-specific eligibility: Does the eligible field change, or does the award have a current schedule that affects availability?

The award organizations do not provide a shared metric for ranking prestige, influence, selectivity or importance across these programs. Counts such as the Nobel’s 116 awards and 232 laureates through 2025 and the Shaw category’s 42 laureates through 2025 describe different histories and structures; they do not establish which prize is “best.”
