No-cost EMI is not automatically free. It can offset the interest on an EMI with a merchant or issuer discount, but fees, taxes, the checkout price and repayment rules can still change what you pay. Compare the full payable amount and the terms for your specific card and offer—not just the advertised interest rate or monthly instalment.
What “no-cost EMI” means—and what it does not
No-cost EMI describes an offer structure, not a guarantee that every part of the purchase has zero cost. An issuer may book principal and interest while a merchant or issuer provides an upfront discount intended to offset that interest. Whether it fully does so depends on the amounts and terms for the selected transaction and tenure.
Under the Reserve Bank of India’s directions for card issuers, the principal, interest and upfront discount should be disclosed before a transaction is converted to EMI. The directions also say an interest-bearing EMI must not be presented as zero-interest or no-cost by disguising the interest. Check those figures together rather than relying on the offer label.

Other charges can remain. Processing or convenience fees may apply, and tax may apply to interest or fees under the applicable terms. The RBI’s publication Regulatory Innovations in Digital Lending describes fees and GST in the digital-lending cases it discusses; those examples should not be treated as a current tariff or as the tax treatment of every card EMI.

How the two options differ
| What to compare | No-cost EMI offer | Conventional credit card EMI |
|---|---|---|
| Interest | Interest may be booked and offset by an upfront merchant or issuer discount. Verify that the disclosed discount offsets the stated interest for your chosen tenure. | Interest is charged under the issuer’s disclosed schedule. Rates can vary by issuer, transaction channel and tenure. |
| Fees and taxes | Processing or other fees and applicable taxes can still affect the total. The RBI’s digital-lending examples are sample-specific, not a universal fee schedule. | Issuer terms may provide for processing fees and tax on interest or fees. Check the terms for the EMI you are accepting. |
| Purchase price and discounts | Compare the selling price with the actual checkout price after the EMI offer. Check whether choosing EMI changes the price or makes another checkout discount unavailable. | Include the purchase price and any card offer when comparing against total EMI repayments. The absence of a “no-cost” label does not by itself make this option more expensive. |
| Monthly payment and statement | Check how the issuer bills the instalment, when it is due and how it affects the card’s available limit. | The EMI and other card balances may appear on the same statement. Check the required payment and how the issuer applies payments above the amount due. |
| Returns and early closure | A merchant refund and cancellation of the issuer’s EMI may be separate processes. Confirm the applicable refund, cancellation and fee terms. | Interest adjustments or foreclosure charges may apply. The process and charges depend on the issuer. |
Compare the total payable amount, not just the instalment
Use the actual checkout amount and issuer disclosure to compare each option. A lower monthly instalment can result from a longer tenure; it does not establish that the total cost is lower.
- Record the price: note the selling price and the final checkout price after discounts for each option.
- Record the EMI calculation: note the principal converted, total interest over the full tenure, and any upfront discount credited against interest.
- Add charges and applicable tax: include processing or convenience fees and the tax shown for interest and fees in the applicable terms.
- Write down the cash-flow schedule: record the instalment amount, number of instalments and due dates. Include any other card payment that will be due in the same billing period.
- Check what can change the total: review late-payment charges, missed-instalment consequences, early-closure charges, and the return or cancellation procedure.
- Compare the results: add the amount payable at checkout, instalments and relevant upfront charges and taxes. Compare both the total and the monthly payment schedule.
If the issuer or checkout disclosure does not make the principal, interest, discount and charges clear, ask the merchant or issuer for the applicable terms in writing before accepting. RBI fair-practices guidance calls for disclosure of fees and prepayment terms and says customers should be informed of all-in cost so they can compare financing sources.

What to check about billing, refunds and early closure
An EMI is still subject to the issuer’s billing and payment rules. Check whether the instalment is part of the minimum amount due, what happens if it is not paid in full, and whether an extra card payment automatically reduces unbilled instalments. Do not assume that paying more than the amount due closes the EMI.
Refunds and early closure also need their own checks. A merchant may process a return while the issuer still requires a separate request to reverse or close the EMI. Ask what happens to the interest, discount and fees if you return the purchase or close the plan early, and whether a charge applies. Keep the issuer’s confirmation and the merchant’s refund terms.

Federal Bank terms: one issuer-specific example
Federal Bank’s published credit-card EMI terms, accessed 4 October 2026, illustrate why the exact plan matters. These are that issuer’s terms, not market-wide rates or a recommendation; verify the live terms for the card and offer at issue. The bank’s product page also summarizes its merchant and post-purchase options.
| Federal Bank EMI detail | Published term |
|---|---|
| Merchant/instant EMI interest | 15.99% per annum, with monthly rests; GST is stated to apply. |
| Post-purchase conversion interest | 18% per annum, with monthly rests; GST is stated to apply. |
| Processing fee | 1% of the transaction amount or ₹99, whichever is higher. |
| Foreclosure | 3% plus GST on the remaining principal. |
| Instalment billing | Each EMI instalment is included in the minimum amount due. Failure to pay an instalment in full can lead to default interest and fees. |
| Extra payments | Excess card payments are not automatically allocated to unbilled EMI instalments. |
| Reversal after cancellation | The terms describe a charge-reversal path within seven working days, subject to conditions and customer-care contact. |
Federal Bank’s terms distinguish merchant/instant EMI from post-purchase conversion, so do not apply one rate or process to both. Its published reversal window is conditional and issuer-specific; it is not a general cancellation rule for card EMIs.

How to choose between the offers
- Choose based on all-in cost: prefer the option with the lower total payable amount after the discount, interest, fees and applicable taxes—not the one with the more reassuring label.
- Check affordability over the full tenure: make sure the instalment fits your monthly budget alongside other amounts due on the card.
- Value flexibility explicitly: if you may return the purchase or repay early, compare the documented cancellation and foreclosure processes before accepting.
- Proceed only with a clear disclosure: if you cannot identify the principal, interest, discount and charges, get the terms from the merchant or issuer before conversion.
The Reserve Bank of India’s Fair Practices Code guidance puts the comparison principle plainly: “Further, the banks must inform ‘all-in-cost’ to the customer to enable him to compare the rates charges with other sources of finance.”
