Lixies recreate the layered numeral look of Nixie tubes with etched acrylic and addressable LEDs—not gas-discharge tubes or high-voltage drivers. They are easier to connect to a microcontroller, but still require a compatible controller, a suitable power supply and attention to wiring, brightness and clock accuracy.

What a Lixie is—and how it makes digits glow

A Lixie is an LED-based display made from a stack of clear acrylic sheets. Each sheet carries an etched numeral; LEDs at the edge send light through the acrylic, and the etched marks scatter it so the chosen numeral becomes visible. The layered construction gives the display depth, but it is an LED display rather than a gas-filled cold-cathode tube. IEEE Spectrum explains the light-guiding effect as total internal reflection and notes that typically one sheet is lit at a time.

The creator’s hardware repository describes a build with ten clear acrylic digit planes, a black acrylic top cover, brackets, a PCB, 20 WS2812B LEDs, a 1000 μF / 6.3 V capacitor, and M2.5 bolts and nuts. It also includes PCB design files, laser-cut layouts, CAD files for accessories and documentation. These materials describe a DIY build path; they do not establish that a preassembled display is currently available. See the Lixie hardware and documentation repository.

Why Lixies are easier to control than Nixie tubes

A conventional Nixie tube needs a high-voltage driver circuit. A Lixie uses low-voltage addressable WS2812B LEDs and a data signal, making its control approach familiar to anyone who has used addressable pixels. The trade-off is that a Lixie does not operate on its own: it needs an external compatible microcontroller and software. Hackster’s overview of the design and the creator’s guide describe Arduino/AVR and ESP8266-family support.

In a 2016 article, the Arduino Team quoted creator Connor Nishijima: “The Lixie has extremely simple setup, just connect the 5V, GND, and DIN pads to an Arduino and use the Lixie library to write a digit to the display! That’s it! No HV switching, PCB footprint, or worries!” The connection is simpler than designing a Nixie driver, but you still need to confirm your specific board’s logic levels and current capacity. Read the Arduino Team’s 2016 coverage.

Consideration Lixie Conventional Nixie
Display mechanism Etched acrylic planes lit by addressable LEDs Gas-discharge tube with layered numeral electrodes
Driving electronics Low-voltage LED power and a data signal; requires a compatible microcontroller Requires a high-voltage driver circuit
Control options RGB LED control through the Lixie library and compatible controllers Tube-specific high-voltage driving; no Lixie LED library applies
Visual character Layered acrylic with controllable LED color The actual glow of a gas-discharge tube
Build or sourcing Creator documentation supports a DIY build; current preassembled availability is not established by the cited sources Requires sourcing tubes and suitable high-voltage circuitry

Choose a Lixie for a Nixie-inspired look with LED control and more approachable electronics. Choose a genuine Nixie if the actual gas-discharge display is essential. They are visual alternatives, not electrically or optically identical devices.

Plan the controller, wiring and power

Connections and daisy chaining

The creator’s guide specifies three basic connections: 5V to 5V, ground to ground, and a microcontroller digital output to DIN. To chain displays, connect one display’s DOUT to the next display’s DIN. Check the current documentation and your board’s electrical requirements before wiring; a familiar three-wire interface does not mean every controller or power arrangement is interchangeable. The Lixie guide documents supported controllers and connections.

Budget for LED current

The guide lists 20 WS2812B LEDs per digit and estimates that a full-white numeral could draw as much as 120 mA per digit. It also warns that lighting all 20 LEDs at full white for effects could require substantially more. Those are calculations in the guide, not independent measurements; actual current varies with color, brightness, effects and hardware revision. The guide includes a software power-limit function, but software limits do not replace an appropriately rated supply. Check its current power guidance before building.

Account for voltage drop in longer chains

Longer LED chains can experience voltage drop, which may cause dimming or color shifts. The creator’s guide recommends feeding power at both ends for longer chains. Treat that as design guidance rather than a guarantee: results depend on the particular display, supply, cable, wiring and enclosure.

What to know before making a Lixie clock

A Lixie can serve as a clock display, but the display itself does not keep time. In a February 2018 report, IEEE Spectrum’s David Schneider described a four-digit clock built with an Arduino Nano. He set the Lixie library’s maximum current to 400 milliamps to run it from a computer USB port, and reported that his clock ran about 0.3 percent fast, attributing the drift to the Nano’s ceramic resonator. He noted that a real-time clock or the creator’s ESP8266/NTP example could improve timekeeping. That drift figure describes Schneider’s particular build, not all Arduino Nano clocks or Lixies. Read the IEEE Spectrum clock-build report.

Price and availability: old coverage is not a current listing

Hackster and IEEE Spectrum reported a price of US$38 per Lixie in coverage from around 2018. That is historical, not a verified current price. The cited sources do not establish present inventory, seller status or current availability of a preassembled unit. Hackster’s coverage and IEEE Spectrum’s clock article provide the historical context.
