Running Nioh at 1280×720 on a 3840×2160 monitor can improve performance, but the image will look noticeably softer than native 4K. For the sharpest picture, use the monitor’s native resolution; if performance is the priority, render at a lower resolution and upscale with your GPU or monitor. The right choice depends on whether the game can maintain your preferred frame rate at native 4K.
What does 720p look like on a 4K monitor?
A 4K UHD monitor displays 3840×2160 pixels; 720p is 1280×720. The display must expand the 720p image to fill the screen, but scaling cannot restore detail that was not rendered. Fine edges, textures, and small interface text will therefore look softer than they do at native 4K.
In each dimension, 720p has one-third as many pixels as 4K, or one-ninth as many pixels overall. For comparison, NVIDIA’s scaling examples use 1920×1080 as a 50% input and 2560×1440 as a 67% input for 4K output. A 720p input is lower still, so it generally gives up more detail.

| Game rendering resolution | Image-quality trade-off on a 4K display | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| 1280×720 | Softest of these options; least source detail and potentially less legible fine text. | When you need the largest reduction in rendering resolution to improve performance. |
| 1920×1080 | More detail than 720p, but still visibly below native 4K. | When 4K is too demanding and 720p looks too soft. |
| 2560×1440 | Sharper than 1080p, though not as detailed as native 4K. | When you want an intermediate performance and image-quality balance. |
| 3840×2160 | Sharpest option because the game renders at the display’s native resolution. | When your system can maintain the frame rate you want. |
These are image-quality comparisons, not measured Nioh frame rates. Actual performance depends on your hardware and settings.

Should you use GPU scaling or monitor scaling?
Both approaches can enlarge a lower-resolution image to fill a 4K screen. With GPU scaling, the graphics card handles the conversion; monitor scaling leaves it to the display. The appearance can vary by hardware and settings. If your GPU’s scaling feature offers sharpening, try it and compare the result with your monitor’s scaling. Keep the display output at 3840×2160 when possible, and let the GPU upscale the game’s lower-resolution rendering if you want to use driver sharpening.
NVIDIA Image Scaling, for example, renders a game at a lower resolution and upscales and sharpens it to match the monitor’s native resolution. NVIDIA’s guide describes fullscreen requirements and GPU-specific limitations, so check those details for your system before relying on the feature: NVIDIA Image Scaling guide.

- Quality Visuals: The VG270K 27" IPS monitor with 3840 x 2160 UHD resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio presents stunning, high-quality images with excellent detail. The zero-frame design does away with the thick frames found on conventional monitors freeing up precious screen space.
- AMD FreeSync Premium Technology: Say “goodbye” to stuttering and tearing. With AMD FreeSync Premium, the monitor’s frames are synced with the graphics card’s frames, which eliminates screen tearing and provides the smoothest gaming experience.
- Quick Refresh Rate: Different content has different refresh rate and resolution requirements. If you are playing an FPS or racing game, you will need a monitor with a high refresh rate. However, if you are doing office work or streaming videos, a higher resolution will be more beneficial. With DFR technology, users can choose a higher resolution, or a higher refresh rate based on what is suitable for them.
- Responsive: Up to 0.5ms GTG (Gray to Gray) response time enhanced gamers’ in-game experience. No matter if the fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting.
- ZeroFrame Design: With a Nitro VG270K monitor, you’ll want to see as much of the display as possible. Get more real estate with the near bezel-less design, allowing you to see more and do more. The ZeroFrame design lets you place multiple monitors next to each other for a seamless, almost uninterrupted view.
How to configure Nioh
- Try native resolution first. Set Nioh to 3840×2160 if the game offers it and your GPU can sustain your target frame rate.
- Lower the rendering resolution if needed. Test 2560×1440 or 1920×1080 before dropping to 1280×720; compare both image clarity and performance in the same scene.
- Choose where scaling happens. Use your graphics driver’s scaling option if you want its sharpening controls; otherwise, allow the monitor to upscale the image.
- Check the result in motion. Look at edges, small text, and frame-rate stability. Choose the highest rendering resolution that performs acceptably for you.
Will Nioh run at 4K?
Steam’s listed PC requirements provide a baseline for running the game, not a promise of 4K performance or a controlled 4K/60 benchmark. The listing specifies Windows 10 64-bit, an Intel Core i5-3550-class processor, 6 GB RAM, and a GTX 780 3 GB or Radeon R9 280 3 GB as minimum requirements. Recommended specifications are an i7-4770K-class processor, 8 GB RAM, and a GTX 1060 6 GB or Radeon R9 380X 4 GB. See Nioh: Complete Edition on Steam for the listing. Those requirements do not establish what frame rate a particular PC will deliver at 4K.

What if Nioh does not offer the resolution you need?
A community patch called NiohResolution describes resolution and aspect-ratio support for the PC version. Its release page also notes a feature for Nioh 2: Complete Edition and says the UI is not perfectly scaled; that statement concerns Nioh 2, not an official Nioh 1 feature. The patch is community software, not a Koei Tecmo support tool. Review the release notes for the exact game and version, and back up configuration files before changing them: NiohResolution releases.
