Nintendo is openly encouraging players to try the optional Joy-Con 2 mouse controls in Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave. But calling them “dodgy” overstates what the available evidence shows: one pre-release hands-on preview described them as smooth and effective, while its writer said he personally preferred traditional controls. That is one person’s impression, not a verdict on how the mode works for everyone.
What Nintendo wants you to try
Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive released September 17, 2026. Nintendo’s official game page describes an optional mouse-control mode that uses Joy-Con 2 to move units and access helpful information. Players can switch between mouse and button controls whenever they like. Nintendo’s game page presents the mode as an alternative, not a requirement.
Nintendo producer Genki Yokota made the invitation explicit in a pre-release interview: “If you’re interested in experiencing a tactical RPG with mouse controls, we’d love for you to give it a try.” The interview was translated from Japanese. Read the developer interview.
Are the controls actually dodgy?
The available hands-on assessment does not support that broad characterization. In an August 13, 2026 preview, TechRadar senior writer Harry Padoan described the mouse controls as “smooth and effective.” He also said he did not use them much because he prefers traditional controls. That distinction matters: the preview offers a positive impression of responsiveness, but not an extended or controlled comparison with button inputs. TechRadar’s preview is one writer’s pre-release experience, not evidence of player-wide consensus.

The practical question is whether pointing with Joy-Con 2 feels more convenient for your tasks than navigating with buttons. Nintendo says mouse mode can help move units and access information, but the official description does not spell out every interface interaction. The reviewed sources do not document a particular misclick problem, quantify selection accuracy, or establish whether the mouse posture is comfortable in handheld, tabletop, or docked play.
How to decide whether to use mouse mode
- Try it for unit selection: See whether pointing to a unit feels more direct than moving through selections with buttons.
- Check information access: Test whether using the pointer makes it easier for you to inspect the unit or battlefield information you need.
- Pay attention to errors: Notice whether you can select the intended unit or action reliably. The available preview does not establish a general accuracy issue.
- Judge comfort in your setup: The sources do not provide an ergonomic assessment, so your preferred way to hold Joy-Con 2 is relevant.
- Switch back when it suits you: Nintendo says you can change between mouse and button controls at any time; you do not have to commit to one mode.
There is no published sensitivity specification, remapping detail, or formal comparison in the reviewed sources. Treat those as unknown rather than assuming the controls behave like a computer mouse in every respect.

Did an update fix a mouse-control problem?
Nintendo Support lists version 1.0.1, released September 16, 2026. Its notes mention additional weapons and general fixes, but do not identify a mouse-control change. The notes therefore do not establish that Nintendo fixed a mouse issue in that update. Nintendo Support’s update notes.
Release and US edition details
Nintendo’s 2026 US launch announcement listed the standard edition at $69.99 and the Dagdan Collection at $119.99. These are announcement list prices, not verified current retail prices.
