For multiplayer, Nintendo Switch Sports is the better fit if you want online matches, newer team sports and a larger current lineup. Wii Sports remains a strong local party choice if your group prefers its five classics or its training and fitness modes. There is no universal couch-play winner: the games use different hardware and offer different sports.

What changed between Wii Sports and Nintendo Switch Sports?

The sports lineup

The original Wii Sports includes five sports: tennis, baseball, bowling, golf and boxing, according to the historical reference for the game. Nintendo’s current Nintendo Switch Sports listing names eight: basketball, golf, Soccer, volleyball, bowling, tennis, badminton and Chambara. Tennis, bowling and golf appear in both. Baseball and boxing are absent from the Switch game; the newer title adds basketball, Soccer, volleyball, badminton and Chambara.

The eight-sport count reflects the current listing, not the original 2022 launch lineup: golf and basketball arrived in free updates, as noted on Nintendo’s UK product page.

Controllers and play setup

Wii Sports uses the Wii Remote, with a Wii Remote and Nunchuk gestures used for boxing. Nintendo Switch Sports uses Joy-Con motion controls. Nintendo Support says the newer game does not support handheld mode, controller setup varies by sport, and Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are not compatible; see Nintendo’s Switch Sports FAQ.

Modes beyond the sports themselves

Wii Sports includes training challenges and a fitness test, giving solo players activities beyond standard matches. Nintendo Switch Sports puts more emphasis on online matchmaking, Pro League ranks, rotating cosmetic rewards and team play. The two games therefore add different kinds of replay value rather than simply offering more of the same.

How do the games compare for multiplayer?

Multiplayer factor Nintendo Switch Sports Wii Sports
Local play Nintendo’s U.S. product page lists one to four players on one system. Exact formats and controller needs vary by sport. Local multiplayer around five sports; Wii hardware and Wii Remotes are required. The historical reference describes turn-based golf and bowling that can share one Wii Remote.
Online play Online play supports one or two players per system, with matchmaking, private play with friends and some same-system team-ups against online opponents. An active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required. The cited historical reference describes the original’s local sports and modes; it does not establish comparable online matchmaking.
Standout multiplayer sports Basketball, Soccer, volleyball, badminton and Chambara join returning tennis, bowling and golf. Tennis, baseball, bowling, golf and boxing.
Extra modes Online ranks, matchmaking and rotating cosmetic rewards. Training challenges and a fitness test.
Hardware Nintendo Switch and Joy-Con; no handheld mode or Pro Controller support. Wii console and Wii Remotes; boxing uses a Nunchuk as well.

Nintendo’s U.S. page describes online play this way: “Play each sport online, or team up with a friend on the same system to take on opponents near and far in team sports like Basketball, Volleyball and Tennis.” Nintendo’s UK listing also describes a 16-player bowling knockout. These online formats are the clearest multiplayer distinction between the current Switch game and the original local-play experience.

Which game should your group choose?

Choose Nintendo Switch Sports for online play and newer team formats

  • You want online matchmaking, ranks or private games with friends.
  • Your group is interested in Soccer, Chambara, badminton, volleyball or basketball.
  • You have a Switch and suitable Joy-Con controllers, and are comfortable with sport-specific setup.
  • You want to play online: Nintendo says this requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.

Choose Wii Sports for its local classics and solo activities

  • Your group specifically wants baseball or boxing, which are not in the Switch lineup.
  • You prefer local play built around tennis, bowling, golf, baseball or boxing.
  • You want training challenges or a fitness test.
  • You already have the required Wii console and Wii Remotes; the game is not a substitute for a current Switch title.

For couch play, decide by sport and setup

Both games support local multiplayer, but the right choice depends on the sports your group will actually play and the hardware you have. Switch Sports supports up to four players on one system overall, while individual sport formats and controller needs differ. Wii Sports is a different proposition built around Wii Remotes and its five-sport collection.
