Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive due October 22, 2026. Early hands-on reports are encouraging about its sports variety and motion controls. Calling it the best multiplayer game of 2026, however, is one preview writer’s judgment rather than a settled result. The game was not yet available when these impressions were published, and the long-term appeal of its sports has not been tested.
Release status and what Nintendo has confirmed
As of October 8, 2026, Nintendo listed the game as upcoming, with a release date of October 22, 2026. Its Australian product page lists an estimated 16 GB file size. That figure is Nintendo’s estimate, not a final installed size, so check your console’s free storage before downloading. Nintendo’s Australian page describes the core pitch in one line: “Play 12 different sports using intuitive motion controls in Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, only on Nintendo Switch 2.”

The twelve sports
Nintendo’s listing names twelve motion-controlled sports: Bowling, Boxing, Tennis, Table Tennis, Archery, Volleyball, Basketball, Golf, Thumb Wrestling, Prop Plane, Skateboarding and Power Cruising. The table below pairs each sport with what the cited early previews actually say about it. Where a preview did not mention a sport, the table says so rather than implying a verdict.
| Sport | What the cited early previews say | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Bowling | The writer liked its return, including 100-pin bowling. | ComicBook.com |
| Boxing | The writer praised the stamina meter and the opponent ladder. | ComicBook.com |
| Thumb Wrestling | The writer praised its strategy. GamesRadar+ describes positioning the Joy-Con 2 for it. | ComicBook.com; GamesRadar+ |
| Skateboarding | GamesRadar+ describes miming a skateboard push to control it. | GamesRadar+ |
| Tennis, Table Tennis, Archery, Volleyball, Basketball, Golf, Prop Plane, Power Cruising | Not stated in the cited previews. | Not applicable |
The previews also do not establish how these sports compare on depth once the full game is out. Each individual control scheme is described only from first sessions.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Beyond the matches: Wuhu Island
The game is not only a list of matches. Nintendo describes exploring Wuhu Island, finding photo spots and collectibles, and joining leisure sports. Its September 15, 2026 Singapore announcement adds more specific activities: chasing dolphins, searching for hibiscus flowers and collecting Spocco Photos. It also describes an offline mode called Island Crown, which progresses through Island Champions and Island Legends. Playing sports earns Spocco Points, which go toward character customizations.
Because Island Crown is described as an offline mode, it is the part of the package a solo player can explore without a group. Nintendo has not, in the material reviewed here, tied its length or depth to a specific number of hours.
Playing with others: local and online modes
Nintendo’s listings separate the local and online experience. Read the conditions for each before planning a group session.
Rank #2
- The next evolution of the Nintendo Switch system
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Supports up to 4K resolution** when using a compatible game and TV connected via the included Nintendo Switch 2 dock
- Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.***
- Local play: one to four players on one Switch 2 system.
- Play modes: TV and tabletop modes are supported. Nintendo states that handheld mode is unsupported.
- Controllers: each player needs one compatible controller, and some setups may require additional controllers.
- Online play: requires a Nintendo Account and a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. Availability may differ by country.
- Online player count: not yet set. Nintendo’s Canadian store page says “Details about how many people can play together online will be provided in the future.”
Controllers, straps and safety
Nintendo’s Canadian page advises: “Be aware of your surroundings. Wear wrist straps and allow adequate room around you during game play.” Motion controls make this practical rather than optional, especially in group sessions where players are swinging, throwing and stepping at the same time.
Nintendo’s listings do not settle what comes in the box, so check the package contents for straps and controllers before assuming you have enough for a full group.
What early previews say
ComicBook.com: broad sampling of the sports
Logan Moore, writing on October 8, 2026, reports trying more than half of the sports during a Nintendo-hosted preview session. He singled out the return of bowling, including 100-pin bowling, along with the boxing stamina meter and opponent ladder and the strategy of thumb wrestling. He also highlighted the contrast between traditional sports and island traversal. The piece states that he had not seen everything in the final game, so treat these as one writer’s pre-release impressions.

GamesRadar+: control ideas
GamesRadar+ responds positively to the motion and mouse-control ideas. Its examples include miming a skateboard push, holding the Joy-Con 2 like a paper plane, and positioning the controller for thumb wrestling. It is a hands-on impression, not a final assessment.
Nintendo Life roundup: mostly positive, with one reservation
Nintendo Life’s roundup of final previews reports broadly positive reactions. It also passes along one reservation from GameSpot: its previewer could not say how much collective mileage the activities would have over time. That is the most important caveat for anyone reading the game as a long-term multiplayer pick.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is “best multiplayer game of 2026” a fair claim?
The positive impressions are real, but the superlative is not yet tested. Early previews support the argument that the game offers unusual variety and new control ideas. They do not show that it outlasts other party games over months of play, and no independent ranking or review score for the title exists yet to back the claim.
If you want to compare it fairly with other 2026 multiplayer games, use the same criteria for each: local player count and controller needs, variety of events, ease of motion controls for newcomers, online details, solo content such as Island Crown, and replay value after release. Measured that way, Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is a credible contender on early evidence. Whether it is the best of the year is an opinion that will only become testable after the full release.
Quick Recap
Who it suits right now
- Groups in one room: the local mode, with up to four players on one system, is the core of the design. Confirm you have enough compatible controllers and wrist straps.
- Online-first players: confirm your Nintendo Account, Nintendo Switch Online membership and country availability, and wait for Nintendo to publish an online player count.
- Solo players: Island Crown and the Wuhu Island activities are the main offline draw, but their long-term depth has not been demonstrated yet.
