For the most straightforward purchase, choose the physical edition if you want the Leg Strap included. Nintendo says the digital edition is available at a lower price, but the strap is sold separately. The strap is needed only for some Soccer play—not for every sport. Before buying, also check your Joy-Con setup, console mode, and whether you plan to play online, which requires a separate Nintendo Switch Online membership.
What’s included in each edition?
| Option | What Nintendo says is included | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Physical game | The game and a Leg Strap accessory for Soccer. | Confirm that the listing is for the physical edition and that the package is complete, especially when buying used or from a marketplace seller. |
| Digital game | The digital game; Nintendo says it can be purchased at a lower price, with the Leg Strap sold separately. | Compare the live digital-game and strap prices with the physical listing. The lower game price does not establish which option costs less overall. |
Package contents and prices can vary by listing, retailer, and region. Check the current Nintendo US product listing before purchasing.

Do you need the Leg Strap?
No—not for every sport. The strap is required for some Soccer play. It is a useful included accessory with the physical edition, or a separate purchase to consider if you own the digital game and want to play those Soccer modes. Nintendo also designs the strap for use with Ring Fit Adventure; see its Leg Strap instructions for how to attach it.
The strap works with compatible Joy-Con controllers, but Nintendo says Joy-Con 2 controllers are not compatible with it. If you are buying for a Switch 2 setup, check controller compatibility before counting on the strap.

What do you need to play?
A supported console setup
Nintendo Switch Sports uses Joy-Con motion controls and does not support Handheld Mode. Nintendo recommends playing on a Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch OLED Model, or Nintendo Switch 2 in TV Mode for the best experience. Nintendo warns that compatibility and play experience may differ on Nintendo Switch Lite; check Nintendo’s support FAQ for setup details before buying for a Lite.
Enough controllers for your players and sport
Nintendo lists local play on one system for 1–4 players and online play for 1–2 players. Those player limits do not mean every sport or arrangement uses the same number of controllers: accessory needs depend on the sport and how many people are playing. Check Nintendo’s support details for your intended setup, then count the compatible Joy-Con controllers you already own before purchasing extras.

- Swing, kick, spike, and bowl your way to victory in 7 sports
- Play Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara (swordplay)
- Motion controls will get you moving and help turn your real-world actions into in-game movements
- Use the Leg Strap accessory to kick the ball in Soccer
- Play with friends and family locally or online—in some sports, you and a friend can even team up on the same system to take on other teams online
A Nintendo Account, internet, and membership for online play
Online features require internet access and a Nintendo Account. Playing online also requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, which is sold separately from the game. Buying either edition of the game does not include that membership.

- Choose physical if you want the Leg Strap in the package or prefer a physical copy. Verify that the copy is complete.
- Consider digital if you prefer a download and do not need the strap for the Soccer play you intend to use. If you do need it, compare the combined live cost of the game and strap with the physical edition.
- Buy an extra strap only if needed—for example, if you bought digital and want the relevant Soccer play, or need to replace a missing accessory. Check compatibility with your Joy-Con.
- Buy extra Joy-Con only after checking your setup. Controller requirements vary by sport and player arrangement; not every buyer needs an extra pair.
Current prices, stock, membership costs, and regional bundles change, so confirm them on live listings rather than assuming one format is always the better value.

What sports are included?
Nintendo’s current US listing describes eight sports: Basketball, Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton, and Chambara. Golf was added after launch: Nintendo’s product listing gives the release date as April 29, 2022, while its November 28, 2022 news post described Golf as newly added. Older launch-era descriptions may therefore show a smaller roster than the current one.
