No video format is supported for playback in the Nintendo Switch’s hidden browser. Nintendo says the console cannot be used as a general-purpose internet browser, and technical documentation describes the system’s restricted web applet failing when video-tag content is selected. Converting a clip to MP4, WebM, or another format will not create a supported playback method.
Why changing the video format will not solve it
The Switch does not provide a supported general-purpose browser. Nintendo’s support page answers the question directly: “It’s not possible to use an Internet browser on the Nintendo Switch.” Nintendo Support
The hidden system web applet is restricted. Switchbrew, a community-maintained technical reference, reports that selecting content associated with a video tag can trigger an assertion instead of playback. Switchbrew’s Internet Browser documentation This is a technical description, not a Nintendo codec specification or a hands-on compatibility test.
Taken together, these limits mean there is no reliable list of browser video formats to try. MP4 and WebM are examples people commonly ask about, not formats verified as working or failing in a Nintendo codec test. The issue is the unsupported browser playback workflow, rather than a known mismatch that can be fixed by choosing a different container or codec.
