On the original Nintendo Switch, a game card can reduce how much of a game’s base software you need to store on the console, while an eShop download takes up space in system memory or on a microSD card. Neither format changes where your progress is saved: save data stays in the console’s system memory. And a physical card does not always include everything a game needs, so check the requirements for the specific release before buying.

Game cards and downloads compared

What matters Game card eShop download
Where the game software is The card carries the physical game software, but some releases also require downloaded data. The software is downloaded to system memory or a microSD card.
Starting and switching games Insert the relevant card to play; switching games may require swapping cards. After installation, select the game from the HOME Menu without handling a card.
Where progress is saved Console system memory—not the game card. Console system memory—not the microSD card.
Storage needs Some physical releases require additional downloaded storage. The downloaded software, updates, and DLC use system or microSD storage.
What to check before purchase Check the physical packaging for the release’s storage requirements. Check the eShop listing’s displayed storage requirement.

Nintendo Support confirms the storage and save-data details in its physical and digital save-data FAQ, microSD guidance, and extra-storage FAQ. Card swapping versus selecting an installed game is a practical difference between the formats, not a claim that one loads faster.

Where game data and saves go

Save data stays in system memory

Nintendo says Switch game save data is stored in the console’s system memory whether you play software from a game card or as a download. It cannot be saved or copied to a microSD card. That means the game card is not a backup of your progress, and moving or replacing a microSD card does not move your saves.

Downloads, updates, and captures can use microSD

On the original Nintendo Switch family, downloadable software, update data, DLC, screenshots, and captured video can be stored on a microSD card. When a card is inserted, it becomes the default location for downloadable software. MicroSD expands space for those files, but not for game saves.

Archiving frees space without erasing progress

If the console is short on space, you can archive or delete downloaded software without deleting its save data. You can redownload the software later, but doing so depends on access to the Nintendo Account that purchased it and the eShop.

Physical cards can still require downloads

A physical release may include the base game on the card, yet still need an update or additional data download. Nintendo says extra storage requirements can apply to both games bought in stores and games downloaded from the eShop; requirements vary by title. A game card’s presence therefore does not guarantee that the full game is playable without a download.

Before buying, check the physical package for the card edition’s storage requirements or the eShop listing for a digital copy’s requirement. Nintendo does not provide one universal storage figure for Switch games. A specific title’s listing or packaging is the useful number to check.

Choosing the format for how you play

A game card may suit you if…

  • You want a tangible game medium to carry.
  • You prefer not to download the base software when it is included on the card.
  • You do not mind inserting and swapping cards, and you have checked whether that release needs additional data.

An eShop download may suit you if…

  • You want to start an installed game from the HOME Menu without swapping cards.
  • You are comfortable allocating system or microSD storage for the game and any updates or DLC.
  • You can access the purchasing Nintendo Account and eShop if you need to redownload it later.

There is no universal price, resale, lending, or long-term availability advantage established for either format. Those considerations depend on the specific game, edition, market, account, and store policy.

Choosing a microSD card for an original Switch

Nintendo lists these capacities for microSD cards used with the original Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED:

Card type Capacity supported
microSD Up to 2 GB
microSDHC 4–32 GB
microSDXC 64 GB–2 TB

Nintendo recommends UHS-I compatibility and a transfer speed of 60–95 MB/s, noting that higher transfer speed is better for gameplay experience. Its microSD card support guidance recommends using one card with the system: software stored across multiple cards cannot later be combined onto one card.

Do not apply original Switch storage advice to Switch 2

Nintendo Switch 2 is a separate case. It supports microSD Express cards for software storage, not original Switch microSD cards. Nintendo lists 256 GB of system storage, with some reserved for console use, and says no individual games currently require additional storage. Some Switch 2 releases use game-key cards: the card is needed to download the full game data and must be inserted to start that game. See Nintendo’s game-key card guidance for those releases. Do not use original Switch microSD compatibility information to choose storage for Switch 2.
