There is no reliable console-wide winner. Whether a game runs better on Nintendo Switch 2 or PlayStation 4 depends on the title, the edition, its graphics mode and what you mean by “better”—frame-rate consistency, image quality, loading, or the ability to play away from a TV. The clearest direct example available is Cyberpunk 2077; it is evidence about that game and tested versions, not a ranking of every game on both systems.
What “runs better” means in a Switch 2 vs. PS4 comparison
A useful comparison needs the same game and, ideally, the same scenes, comparable patches and equivalent settings. Otherwise, a higher frame-rate target on one edition may not mean steadier performance in play, and a sharper-looking image may reflect different resolution or reconstruction techniques rather than a general hardware advantage.
Assess the game across separate measures:
- Frame rate: the target and how consistently the game holds it, including frame-time stability.
- Image quality: internal rendering resolution, output resolution, reconstruction and visual settings.
- Loading: comparable loading sequences and conditions, rather than an assumption based on console specifications.
- Play mode: whether the game can be played handheld, tabletop or only on a TV.
- Edition: whether both systems run the same release, or one has a distinct edition, upgrade or update.
These are different axes. A game can offer a higher frame-rate mode on one platform while another version has different image-quality trade-offs. Portability is a practical advantage, but it does not establish a frame-rate or graphics win.
The strongest direct example: Cyberpunk 2077
Digital Foundry’s 13 June 2025 technical review of Cyberpunk 2077 on Switch 2 includes visual comparisons with PS4 and a Switch 2-versus-PS4 frame-rate test. Its description identifies a 30 fps Quality mode and a 40 fps Performance mode on Switch 2, and notes that the Phantom Liberty expansion is a more demanding case.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Those figures describe mode targets in that review, not guaranteed frame rates in every scene. The comparison is specific to the tested game builds and conditions. It does not support a precise resolution claim or a broad verdict about all titles, and the review’s metadata alone does not establish an exact average frame rate or a winner in a particular scene.
What Nintendo’s Switch 2 specifications do—and do not—tell you
Nintendo says Switch 2 can output up to 4K when connected to a compatible television and running a compatible game. Nintendo also lists up to 120 fps in compatible games, while stating that 4K output is capped at 60 fps and that frame rate varies by game. These are system capability limits, not benchmarks showing that a particular game runs at 4K, reaches 120 fps or outperforms its PS4 version. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 features page and Switch 2 FAQ for the conditions.

The built-in screen is a 7.9-inch, 1920 × 1080 LCD. Nintendo describes TV, tabletop and handheld play, with up to 4K output through the dock under compatible-game and display conditions. That gives Switch 2 a use the PS4 does not provide as a console feature: playing on its own screen. It says nothing by itself about how a shared game performs. The screen and mode details are on Nintendo’s features page and FAQ.
Check which version you are comparing
“A game on Switch 2” can mean a native Switch 2 release, an edition upgraded for Switch 2, or an older Nintendo Switch game played through compatibility. These are not interchangeable comparisons with a PS4 release. Nintendo says compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games can be played on Switch 2, but some games may be unsupported or not fully compatible. Some Switch titles also receive free updates or paid upgrades that add content or improve performance. Check the current status and edition for the specific game on Nintendo Support’s compatibility page.

For a fair comparison, first confirm that the title is available on both consoles, then identify the exact edition and update being tested. If one side is a Switch game running through backward compatibility and the other is a PS4 release, describe that distinction rather than presenting the result as a native Switch 2-versus-PS4 port comparison.
How to decide for a game you care about
- Confirm availability and edition. Check whether the game has a native Switch 2 version, a Switch 2 upgrade, or only a compatible older Switch version, and compare it with the PS4 release.
- Look for a direct technical comparison. Prefer testing that identifies the game builds, scenes and modes on both consoles. A console’s maximum output or frame-rate specification is not a substitute.
- Match the measure to your priority. Check frame-rate consistency if smoothness matters, image quality if visual detail matters, and loading only where comparable tests are available.
- Factor in where you play. If handheld or tabletop use matters, Switch 2 offers those modes; that is a usability difference rather than proof of better performance.
- Keep the conclusion title-specific. A result for one game should not be generalized to other ports or the full library.
Switch 2 storage is a setup issue, not a performance upgrade
If you plan to install digital games, note that Nintendo Switch 2 uses microSD Express for expandable game storage; ordinary microSD cards cannot store games on the system. This is a compatibility requirement for storage, not a way to improve frame rates or graphics. Nintendo lists the requirement on its compatibility and storage support page.
