The two RPGs behind the headline are Dragon Quest XI S and Octopath Traveler II, which a report published October 2, 2026 says arrived on Nintendo Switch 2 during the preceding two weeks. The reported upgrade is more substantial for Dragon Quest XI S; Octopath Traveler II mainly offers clearer visuals and shorter loading. If you already own either Switch version, note that the report says these ports have no upgrade path or save-file carryover. The “best of the last decade” label is the headline’s editorial judgment, not a measured ranking. (Wukeer, October 2, 2026)
What changes in the Switch 2 versions?
The comparisons below reflect one article author’s observations, not a controlled benchmark: the source provides no test methodology or independently verified measurements. Square Enix’s official site covers its Switch 2 RPG releases, but the reviewed page does not confirm the specific release timing or detailed performance comparisons for these games. (Wukeer; Square Enix)
| Game | Reported Switch 2 changes | Buying consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Dragon Quest XI S | The report describes a clearer image, quality and performance modes, an option for 60fps, and shorter loading. It presents this as the more noticeable visual and performance update. | More appealing for someone who has not played it or wants a replay. Existing owners should decide whether the reported improvements justify buying it again. |
| Octopath Traveler II | The report describes slightly clearer visuals and loading reduced to about half. It says the port looks little different from the Switch 1 version played in handheld boost mode. | The clearest case is for newcomers. The visual change is comparatively subtle for existing owners. |
For Octopath Traveler II, the article reports loading in under 20 seconds on Switch 2 versus just under 40 seconds on Switch 1. Those are its observations, not results from a stated test protocol; treat “about half” as a reported comparison, not a guaranteed loading time in every situation. (Wukeer)
Should you buy them if you already own the Switch versions?
The report says neither new port offers an upgrade path or save-file carryover from the earlier Switch version. That makes these repurchases rather than upgrades for existing owners. Before buying, check the current product details for the edition you are considering and weigh the reported changes against starting again without your old save.
#1 Best Overall
- The eleventh installment in the fabled DRAGON QUEST series, taking the tale of the legendary heroes right back to its origins, comes to Nintendo Switch 2!
- What does it mean to be a hero? A young lad from a country village sets out to find the answer to this question, embarking on an epic adventure that will lead him to uncover the secrets that lie at the heart of his world.
- DRAGON QUEST XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition for Nintendo Switch 2 contains all of the content added in the original Definitive Edition for Nintendo Switch, including: new story chapters where the party members take center stage, Japanese voices and additional English voices, the ability to switch between 3D and 2D mode, and an orchestral score.
- This new edition for Nintendo Switch 2 also introduces new optimization modes, allowing you to prioritize graphics or performance.
- GAME-KEY CARD. 30 GB - Full game download via internet required.
- Dragon Quest XI S: Consider repurchasing if a replay, clearer image, mode choices, 60fps option, or shorter loading matters enough to you. The report describes its changes as the more substantial of the two.
- Octopath Traveler II: Consider it if faster loading is valuable to you, but the reported visual difference is modest and the article sees little change from handheld boost mode on Switch 1.
Which version makes the most sense for a first playthrough?
Readers who have not played either game are the clearest prospective buyers in the report: they can start with the Switch 2 port without deciding whether its improvements warrant a second purchase. If you are choosing between the pair, Dragon Quest XI S is the one the author describes as having the more visible upgrade. Choose based on which RPG you want to play, rather than treating the headline’s “best” claim as an objective ranking.
