The most useful Nintendo Switch 2 accessories depend on how you play and what you carry: choose the Pro Controller for a full-size TV-play pad, a Switch 2-sized screen protector for the display, and a compact case or all-in-one bag based on whether you travel with the dock. The console already comes with a pair of Joy-Con 2, so a second controller purchase can wait unless you need another player’s set or a different shape.
What are the most essential Nintendo Switch 2 accessories?
For most owners, the practical shortlist is a correctly sized screen protector and a case that matches the travel setup. Add a full-size controller if you prefer one for TV play. These are optional purchases, not items required to use the console: Nintendo includes left and right Joy-Con 2 with Switch 2.
Buy accessories designed specifically for Switch 2. Its larger screen and different body dimensions mean fitted cases, grips, and screen protectors for Switch 2 will not fit the original Switch, Switch OLED, or Switch Lite, according to Belkin’s compatibility guidance.

Which controller should you choose?
Choose the Pro Controller for a full-size TV-play pad
Nintendo’s Switch 2 Pro Controller is the straightforward choice if you want a conventional, full-size controller rather than the two smaller Joy-Con 2. Nintendo lists a C Button for GameChat, mappable GL and GR rear buttons, an audio jack, and HD rumble 2. Nintendo estimates about 40 hours of battery life and about three hours to charge; actual battery life varies with use. Its battery is internal, and Nintendo says replacement is a paid service. Those rear buttons are useful only if you want extra inputs you can map; they are not a reason everyone needs the controller. TechRadar recommends it as a tailor-made Switch 2 controller, while GamesRadar+ names it its best controller and notes the absence of Hall-effect sticks. Keep the included Joy-Con 2 for portable play and extra players
The console includes one left and one right Joy-Con 2. Nintendo lists motion controls, HD rumble 2, a mouse sensor, and access to GameChat through the C Button. Nintendo estimates about 20 hours of battery life and about 3.5 hours to charge; actual battery life varies with use. Consider buying another pair for additional players or as a spare, rather than assuming one is needed for ordinary use.

Add the Charging Grip only if its layout or charging suits you
The optional Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip holds the controllers in a classic-style layout and charges them through the included USB cable. Nintendo says it is sold separately and does not work with original Switch Joy-Con. It is a separate option from the Pro Controller, not a prerequisite for charging Joy-Con 2.

Start with exact fit: choose a protector explicitly made for Switch 2, not one for an earlier console. Then decide whether glare reduction matters more to you than a standard clear finish, and look for application aids if you want help positioning the protector. Check whether replacement protectors are available for the product you select; the cited sources do not establish replacement availability for every model.

Nintendo’s official Carrying Case & Screen Protector bundle is a convenient way to get a protector with a console case; Nintendo says it includes a cleaning cloth and describes the case as sturdy. TechRadar’s 2026 accessories guide names Belkin’s Tempered Glass Anti-Reflective Screen Protector as its screen-protector pick, citing ease of application, scratch resistance, and anti-glare in its editorial assessment. Which carry case fits your travel setup?
Choose the compact case for console-focused portability
Nintendo’s Carrying Case & Screen Protector is intended for carrying the console, with room for up to six game cards and two Joy-Con 2 straps. It includes a screen protector and cleaning cloth. The console, other accessories, and game cards are not included. This is the more suitable format when you want to take the handheld and a few small items, not a complete TV setup.

Nintendo’s All-In-One Carrying Case is designed to carry the console, dock, Joy-Con 2, cables, and up to six game cards. It suits trips where you want the option to connect the console to a TV, but its larger loadout is unnecessary if you only take the handheld.
Consider a larger third-party case for an extended trip
TechRadar discusses the Nacon Protection Case XL as a larger solution for the handheld, dock, games, and cables, and frames it as useful for extended trips. That is the publication’s travel advice, not a manufacturer-stated capacity specification. Compare the bag’s actual dimensions and fit information before buying; the sources cited here do not give a complete capacity comparison across cases.

Will Nintendo Switch accessories work with Switch 2?
Some original Switch controllers can connect wirelessly, but compatibility is not the same as physical fit or full functionality. Nintendo Australia’s compatibility table says original Switch Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2 but cannot attach to the Switch 2 body. The original Switch Pro Controller can also pair wirelessly. The original Switch dock is incompatible with Switch 2.
Nintendo’s table also lists original Joy-Con grips, charging grips, straps, wheels, and battery packs as unusable with Joy-Con 2. Check the exact accessory rather than relying on a general claim that “Switch accessories” work. See Nintendo Australia’s compatibility table.
What about storage cards?
If you are adding storage, Nintendo says Switch 2 is designed for microSD Express cards; conventional microSD cards are not compatible for storing Switch 2 games. In Nintendo Australia’s compatibility guidance, conventional microSD cards are limited to viewing or importing screenshots and video from the original Switch.
