Nintendo Music is the clearer choice for Nintendo soundtracks if you have Nintendo Switch Online and want features such as offline downloads, game-based recommendations, or spoiler controls. Spotify is a documented option for the Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 game soundtracks, and it may suit listeners who want music in their existing Spotify library. Neither service can be called the winner for every game: check whether the exact soundtrack you want is available before choosing.
How the services differ
| What matters | Nintendo Music | Spotify |
|---|---|---|
| What the available evidence establishes | Nintendo’s service is dedicated to Nintendo game music. Nintendo says it has over 250 hours of music spanning more than 130 titles on its U.S. page (Nintendo, 2026); this is a changing publisher claim, not an independently audited inventory. | Spotify’s April 24, 2026 announcement names the game soundtracks for Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. That announcement is not a complete inventory of Spotify’s game-music catalog. |
| Access requirement | An active Nintendo Switch Online membership and Nintendo Account are required. A Switch console is not required. | The announcement does not establish current subscription prices or which plan is needed for any particular listening feature. |
| Offline listening | Nintendo documents mobile downloads for offline listening. | Not established by the Spotify source cited here; check the current plan and app details. |
| Game-specific features | Includes spoiler hiding for selected soundtracks, recommendations based on Switch play history, and extensions for selected tracks. | The cited announcement establishes a Nintendo Game Music Official Playlist, but does not establish equivalent Nintendo-specific features. |
When Nintendo Music is the better fit
Choose Nintendo Music as your first place to look if you want Nintendo-owned game music and value features built around games. Nintendo lists playlists, a My Mix playlist and recommendations based on Switch play history, spoiler hiding for selected soundtracks, and the option to extend selected tracks to five, ten, fifteen, thirty, or sixty minutes.

Its support guide also describes searching by game, track, playlist, or screenshot; making custom playlists; and filtering music by original platform, app addition date, and original game release year. Some functions are app-only. The guide distinguishes “Top tracks” from “All tracks,” which can help when exploring a game’s listing.
Nintendo’s Canadian how-to page uses Animal Crossing: New Horizons as an example of a large listing, with 407 tracks. That is Nintendo’s published example, not a current comparative measure against Spotify.

Membership and devices
Nintendo Music is included with an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, but it is a separate music service rather than a standalone free listening app. Nintendo lists compatible smartphones, tablets, computers, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto on its U.S. service page. Mobile users can stream or download tracks. A browser lets visitors inspect the library, but membership is needed to use the service.
Nintendo’s U.S. page offers a seven-day trial subject to conditions, including automatic renewal unless canceled. Trial terms and membership availability may vary by country, so check Nintendo’s current local terms before signing up. Nintendo Music Support listed 47 named regions in an article updated June 2, 2026, and said more regions may be added; confirm availability where you live.

When Spotify is the better fit
Spotify is a straightforward option if you want the specific Super Mario Galaxy or Super Mario Galaxy 2 game soundtrack named in Spotify’s announcement, or you prefer to keep available game music alongside your other Spotify listening. Search for the exact game in the app and confirm the playlist is currently available in your region.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not confuse Spotify’s separately announced playlist for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie with a game soundtrack: a film soundtrack is not the same release as music from the games. Spotify also described an in-app Luma playback-bar appearance for Premium subscribers in its announcement; that cosmetic feature does not establish that other Nintendo soundtracks are available.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose for the game you want
- Search the exact title on both services. A franchise name or film title may lead to a different release than the game soundtrack you mean.
- Check your existing memberships and local terms. Nintendo Music requires Nintendo Switch Online. The cited Spotify announcement does not provide a current, region-specific price comparison, so compare current terms for your country rather than relying on a general price claim.
- Match the features to your listening. Nintendo documents mobile offline downloads, spoiler hiding for selected soundtracks, and discovery based on Switch play history. For Spotify, confirm the plan and app behavior you need directly.
- Verify before deciding. Catalogs and licensing can change, so check the live listing for the exact game and region rather than treating an announcement or catalog total as a guarantee.
What the catalog comparison can—and cannot—tell you
Nintendo’s published total describes Nintendo Music’s Nintendo-focused library; Spotify’s cited announcement confirms two named game soundtracks. Those figures do not show which service has the larger overall video game catalog. Availability can vary by region and change over time, so no service-wide catalog ranking follows from these claims.
Nintendo’s guide offers Data saving, Balanced, and High quality settings. That does not establish a sound-quality advantage over Spotify: the sources cited here contain no comparable technical measurements for the two services.
