The two Octopath games are Switch 2 editions, not backward-compatible Switch games; Nintendo says their saves are incompatible with the original Switch versions. The roundup also lists new downloads for both Switch 2 and Switch, plus two retail releases arriving after October 1.

The first game originally released in 2018. Nintendo’s 2026 listing says it sold over 3 million copies worldwide. Separately, SQUARE ENIX reported that the HD-2D series had shipped and sold more than 6 million copies worldwide as of its July 13, 2026 announcement. These are differently scoped figures: Nintendo’s number is for the original game, while the publisher’s is for the series.
Is there a physical Octopath Switch 2 edition?
Nintendo’s individual product listings describe digital editions. SQUARE ENIX separately announced a physical bundle with both games, saying: “The Physical edition for Nintendo Switch™ 2 will also be available as a bundle.” The announcement establishes that a bundle is planned; it does not establish individual physical Switch 2 editions, a marketplace listing, or current retail stock.
