Nintendo’s September 2026 Zelda 40th Anniversary presentation announced a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2, with availability listed for November 5. The announcement does not confirm a new “Wilds era” sequel; that phrase is fan discussion, not Nintendo’s official name for the game.
What Nintendo announced
The game is a remake of Link’s 1998 adventure, rather than a newly announced follow-up to Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom. Nintendo’s 40th Anniversary Direct page identifies the remake and its platform; Nintendo’s announcement details describe what has changed.
Remake features Nintendo has named
- Overhauled visuals
- Fully voiced cutscenes and expanded character dialogue
- Symphonic orchestral music
- Reworked camera and movement controls
Nintendo describes it this way: “Remade with completely overhauled visuals, fully voiced cutscenes, expanded character dialogue, symphonic orchestral music, reworked camera and movement controls, and more, Link’s milestone 1998 adventure has been reborn for a whole new era.” The statement is attributed to Nintendo; no individual speaker is named.

What is known about the physical edition
Nintendo says the physical version’s first print run will have special packaging with textured foil cover art, available while supplies last. The announcement does not specify retailer inventory, regional availability, or how long the first print run will remain available.
Why the “Wilds era” wording can mislead
Fans discussing the anniversary presentation have used phrases such as “new Zelda experience” and “wilds era.” Those are informal descriptions, not Nintendo terminology or evidence of a separate sequel announcement. Nintendo’s stated game is the Ocarina of Time remake. Its announced differences from the 1998 adventure concern presentation and controls; the announcement does not provide a performance comparison or hands-on assessment.

How the announcement fits Zelda’s anniversary
Nintendo says the first game in the series launched in Japan in 1986. Its September 8, 2026 corporate release also reports more than 6.1 billion video games and over 870 million hardware units sold globally across Nintendo’s business. Those are company-wide cumulative figures, not Zelda-specific sales.
