Yes—Ninja Theory staff have begun reporting redundancy risk and job losses. Video Games Chronicle (VGC) reported on October 5, 2026, that nine developers had publicly said their roles were at risk or had ended. That is not a verified total for the studio, and Xbox has not announced that Ninja Theory is formally closed: its September 22 statement said it would begin consultation on a proposed closure while exploring other options.
What has happened at Ninja Theory?
The reports follow Xbox’s September 22, 2026 announcement that two separate agreements for Ninja Theory had fallen through. In an employee message published by Xbox Wire, Xbox executive Matt Booty said: “Unfortunately, two separate agreements for Ninja Theory fell through,” and, “We will now begin consultation with employees on a proposed closure while continuing to explore other paths forward.” Xbox’s statement describes a proposed closure and consultation—not a completed shutdown.
On October 5, VGC reported that Ninja Theory employees were posting on LinkedIn that they had either been put at risk of redundancy or had already lost their jobs. VGC named nine developers and their roles, but the posts represent individual reports, not a confirmed count of everyone affected. Some employees described a risk to their jobs rather than a completed dismissal. VGC’s report is the source for those staff accounts.

The July ownership plan did not result in a completed sale, according to Xbox’s later statement that both agreements fell through. The July Xbox-wide workforce figures and September figure of 268 should not be read as Ninja Theory-specific totals.

Is Ninja Theory shutting down?
A final closure has not been confirmed in the cited Xbox statement. Xbox said consultation on a proposed closure would begin and that it was continuing to explore other paths forward. The available reports do not establish whether consultation has finished, whether another ownership arrangement will be reached, or whether Xbox will make a final closure decision—or when.

Senua’s future is uncertain; the reports do not establish that the game has been canceled. VGC says the game was announced in June 2026 with a planned 2027 release, but its October 5 report says its fate had not been officially confirmed. Ninja Theory gameplay programmer Katrin Mair told VGC in a LinkedIn post: “It’s incredibly sad knowing that we won’t get to finish what we were working on. So much care, talent and effort went into it, and I really wish we’d had the chance to see what it could have become.” That is an employee’s account of the work, not an official cancellation announcement.
