The Nikon Z 5 is a full-frame mirrorless camera built around Nikon’s Z lens mount. On paper, it combines a 24.3-megapixel FX sensor, five-axis in-body vibration reduction, two UHS-II SD card slots, and 4K video. Those specifications make it a camera to consider if you want an entry into Nikon’s full-frame Z system, but they do not establish image quality, autofocus reliability, or value in today’s market. This review covers what Nikon documents and what you should verify in independent testing before you buy.
What is the Nikon Z 5?
The Z 5 is an interchangeable-lens digital camera with Nikon’s Z mount. Nikon’s product-history overview places it in the company’s 2020s product history; the material available there does not establish a precise launch date. Do not confuse it with the newer Nikon Z5II, which is a separate model with its own specifications.
Nikon describes the Z 5 through a set of core system features: full-frame capture, in-camera stabilization, a hybrid autofocus system, dual card slots, and access to Z-mount lenses. The figures below are manufacturer specifications, not independently measured test results.

What the specifications mean for a buyer
Full-frame resolution and processing
The 24.3-effective-megapixel FX sensor gives the Z 5 full-frame capture in a 35.9 × 23.9 mm format. The resolution and EXPEED 6 processor identify the camera’s basic imaging platform, but they do not tell you how its files compare with another camera in detail, especially in low light or when recovering shadow detail. Look for independent sample images and controlled comparisons that match the kind of photography you do.
Autofocus and shooting speed
Nikon specifies 273 focus points in its described single-point photo mode and includes Eye-Detection AF and Animal-Detection AF. The maximum listed high-speed continuous rate is 4.5 frames per second. Those numbers describe system features and a stated mode; they do not show how consistently the camera tracks a moving subject or how many usable frames you will get in practice.

If you photograph people, pets, sports, or wildlife, look for tests that show autofocus behavior across those subjects and in motion—not just a focus-point count or a feature list.
Five-axis in-body VR
The Z 5 uses sensor-shift vibration reduction across five axes. Nikon says its effect is equivalent to five stops under the company’s stated conditions. Treat that as Nikon’s claim, not a guarantee of a particular shutter speed or a measured result across every lens and shooting situation. Stabilization can help reduce camera shake, but it does not freeze a moving subject.

- Sleek yet long-reaching, the Nikon NIKKOR Z DX 50-250mm f/4.5-6.3 VR is a 75-375mm-equivalent zoom designed for DX-format Z-mount mirrorless cameras. Two UHS-II card slots
The camera has two SD slots and supports UHS-II SDHC and SDXC cards. That gives you a dual-slot setup, but the specification alone does not establish a particular workflow or protection against every kind of data loss. Check Nikon’s documentation and independent operating guidance for how the camera handles recording across the two cards before relying on a configuration for important work.
Video, viewfinder, and screen
Nikon lists 4K UHD recording at 30p, 25p, and 24p, plus Full HD up to 60p in MOV or MP4. It also specifies a 3.2-inch tilting touchscreen and an approximately 3.69-million-dot OLED EVF. These headline figures do not describe possible video crop, recording limits, rolling shutter, heat behavior, or autofocus performance while filming; consult hands-on video tests if those factors matter to you.

Lens compatibility and moving from a Nikon DSLR
Nikon Z-mount lenses
Nikon says NIKKOR Z lenses are compatible with the Z 5. If you are starting from scratch, consider the lenses you need alongside the camera body: the camera’s value depends partly on the lenses available for your subjects, working distances, and budget. No specific lens has been tested here.

Nikon’s compatibility information says F-mount lenses require a mount adapter and that restrictions may apply. An FTZ adapter may therefore be a route for an existing DSLR lens collection, but compatibility is lens-specific; confirm the exact lens and its functions against Nikon’s guidance before buying or assuming it will work as expected.

What this review can—and cannot—establish
Nikon’s published specifications establish what the Z 5 is designed to offer on paper. They do not settle how well it performs in everyday use. There is no independent hands-on test evidence here for image quality, high-ISO output, autofocus keeper rates, battery endurance, ergonomics, video behavior, or current value.
Before choosing the Z 5, look for independent testing that addresses the questions most relevant to your work:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- How accurately autofocus tracks people, animals, and moving subjects.
- How image quality and high-ISO output compare with cameras you are considering.
- How effective stabilization is with specific lenses and shutter speeds.
- How long the camera sustains bursts, and what buffer behavior to expect.
- Real-world battery endurance and whether the grip and menus suit you.
- Video crop, heat or recording limits, rolling shutter, and focus behavior.
- Current prices for the body and the exact kit you might buy.
Is the Nikon Z 5 worth buying?
The Z 5 merits consideration if you want a full-frame Nikon Z-mount camera and value features such as in-body VR, two UHS-II SD slots, and compatibility with Z lenses, with an adapter route for compatible F-mount lenses. Its published specifications do not, by themselves, show whether it is the right camera for demanding action, video, or low-light work—or whether it is a good deal now.
Current pricing, inventory, and kit contents have not been verified. When comparing listings, confirm that you are looking at the original Z 5 rather than the Z5II, check whether the listing is new or used, identify the seller, and verify the included lens and accessories. Compare the total cost of the body and the lenses you need, then use independent tests to judge performance against your priorities.
