Nikesh Arora became CEO and chairman of Palo Alto Networks on June 6, 2018, succeeding Mark McLaughlin. The company announced the leadership change on June 1; a later SEC filing records that the board made its appointment decision on May 30. Those are three separate dates for the decision, announcement and handover.
When did Nikesh Arora take over?
The transition unfolded over several days in 2018:
- May 30: Palo Alto Networks’ board decided to appoint Arora, according to the company’s SEC filing.
- June 1: Palo Alto Networks publicly announced the appointment and said McLaughlin would become vice chairman.
- June 6: Arora’s appointments as CEO and chairman took effect.
The SEC Form 8-K documents the board’s May 30 decision; the company’s June 1 announcement gives the public announcement and June 6 effective date.
Who did Arora succeed, and what was McLaughlin’s new role?
Arora succeeded Mark McLaughlin as CEO and chairman. McLaughlin moved to vice chairman of the board and said he would work with Arora on the transition while remaining available to support the company as a customer-facing resource.
In a June 4, 2018 letter, McLaughlin described the change this way: “While I am retiring as CEO and chairman after nearly seven amazing years, I will move into a new role as vice chairman of the Board.” He added: “As vice chairman, I will work with Nikesh on the transition and support the company as a customer facing resource.” The full letter, “Thank You NextWave Partners,” was published by Palo Alto Networks.

What experience did Arora bring to Palo Alto Networks?
In its appointment release, Palo Alto Networks identified Arora’s previous senior roles as president and chief operating officer of SoftBank and chief business officer at Google. The company said he helped grow Google’s search business from $2 billion to more than $60 billion in revenue and had led more than 20,000 employees. Those descriptions and figures are the company’s biographical framing in the 2018 announcement; the release does not specify the period covered by the revenue comparison.
Mark McLaughlin, then CEO and chairman, welcomed the appointment, saying: “We are excited to welcome Nikesh to Palo Alto Networks. His proven track record of growing and scaling businesses will be invaluable as we continue to lead the cybersecurity industry.” The company’s announcement did not include a direct quote from Arora.
