Neither Nike nor adidas has one universal fit or cushioning feel. Choose between the specific shoes you are considering: check toe room, midfoot hold and heel security, then match the cushioning and shoe purpose to your runs. There is no universal Nike-to-adidas size conversion established by the brands’ guidance, so try the exact model if you can.

Do Nike or adidas running shoes run bigger?

There is no reliable brand-wide answer: a size that works in one model may not feel the same in another. Upper construction can also change how a shoe feels. Adidas recommends room for the foot to expand at the toes, a secure midfoot and no heel slipping; Nike’s India fit guidance suggests about a thumb’s width between the big toe and the end of the shoe. Use those as fit checks, not as guarantees that a particular size will work.

When trying a pair, lace it as you would for a run and check three points:

  • Toe box: Your toes should have room to spread and move without pressing against the front.
  • Midfoot: The shoe should hold your foot securely without uncomfortable pressure.
  • Heel: Your heel should not lift or slip noticeably as you walk or jog.

Try the specific model and size rather than relying on a conversion between brands. See adidas’s running-shoe fit guidance and Nike India’s sizing guidance.

Which running shoe has more cushioning?

Neither brand is uniformly more cushioned. Each sells models with different cushioning categories and intended uses, and brand labels such as “maximum” or “responsive” are not standardized comparisons between manufacturers. Adidas describes a trade-off: less cushioning can provide more ground feel, while more cushioning can feel comfortable and offer energy return but may make a shoe heavier and place the foot higher off the ground. Your preferred feel and the run you plan to do matter more than the logo.

Nike’s Japan shoe finder sorts recommendations into maximum, responsive and supportive cushioning. It currently includes the Vomero 18 among cushioned recommendations, the Pegasus 41 with ReactX foam, and the Structure 25 as a stable-ride option. These are examples from a regional, live finder, not a direct comparison with adidas models or a permanent catalog. Check Nike’s current finder for its categories and recommendations.

Match the shoe to your run

Start with the surface and session, then narrow by fit and feel. A road daily trainer, a speed-focused shoe and a trail shoe solve different problems; one brand’s model should not be compared with another’s solely because both are running shoes.

Run or use What to prioritize Current examples from brand pages
Everyday road miles Comfort at your usual pace and a fit that remains secure over the full run. adidas US lists Hyperboost Edge for everyday and long runs, and Supernova Rise 3 for supportive casual runs.
Tempo or faster training A feel and ride suited to faster sessions; compare the specific shoe’s fit and published specifications. adidas US describes Boston 13 for speed training and tempo, and EVO SL for fast daily runs.
Road racing Race-day purpose and comfort at the intended effort; test fit rather than assuming a performance label guarantees suitability. Nike’s finder treats road racing as a distinct use category.
Trail running Traction and protection appropriate to the terrain, along with secure fit. Nike’s finder distinguishes trail from road running; adidas’s guide discusses trail traction and protection.

The adidas examples come from its live US daily-running range, so availability and listings can change. For broader franchise positioning, adidas’s Australia guide describes Adizero as speed-oriented, Supernova as comfort/supportive daily trainers, Adistar as maximum cushioning, and Ultraboost as balancing energy, comfort and style. Those are adidas’s descriptions, not independent ratings. See the adidas US daily-running range and adidas Australia’s franchise guide.

Compare fit, cushioning and support—not just brand names

Use the same criteria for each shoe on your shortlist so that the comparison is about the models, not broad brand impressions.

  • Fit: Check toe room, midfoot hold, heel slip and whether the upper feels comfortable.
  • Cushioning: Decide whether you prefer a softer, plusher feel or firmer ground feel. Consider the shoe’s weight and how high it feels underfoot.
  • Purpose and surface: Match the shoe to road miles, speed sessions, racing or trails; terrain affects the outsole and protection you need.
  • Support: Compare how stable and comfortable each shoe feels while running. If a shoe feels uncomfortable or unstable, try alternatives; persistent concerns are a reason to seek qualified advice, not to diagnose yourself from pronation alone.
  • Specifications: Compare model-specific weight, heel-to-toe drop and stack height where the manufacturer publishes them. Use the same version and size basis when comparing figures.

Adidas defines drop as the difference between cushioning height at the heel and forefoot, and stack height as midsole height. Its guide describes a “standard” drop as about 10 mm and mentions 7 or 9 mm examples for lower-drop shoes; these are generalized figures in adidas’s guide, not universal standards or a current Nike–adidas model comparison. Its guidance on strike patterns should likewise be treated as brand advice, not a medical rule or proof that a shoe prevents injury. Read adidas’s selection guide.

A practical way to choose between two pairs

  1. Write down the main use: for example, regular road runs, tempo sessions, racing or trails.
  2. Try each exact model: check toe room, midfoot hold and heel security; do not assume your size transfers between brands.
  3. Compare the ride you prefer: note whether the cushioning feels soft or firm and whether the shoe feels stable and comfortable at your intended pace.
  4. Check the relevant specifications: compare weight, drop and stack only when figures use a consistent model version and size basis.
  5. Choose the pair that fits and suits the run: brand reputation or a cushioning label alone cannot settle the comparison.
