The Nike Vaporfly 4 is a lightweight, carbon-plated road racer with a firmer, snappier feel than its predecessors, according to independent reviewers. It is most compelling for runners who want to race fast on roads or tracks and find its snug, low-volume fit comfortable. It is less suitable if you need a roomy toe box, a broad and forgiving platform, or dependable grip off-road.
What is the Nike Vaporfly 4?
Nike positions the Vaporfly 4 as a road-racing shoe for distances from 5K through the marathon. Its construction combines ZoomX foam, a carbon fiber Flyplate, updated plate curvature, and a lightweight upper. Nike announced the shoe on February 25, 2025, and said global availability at Nike.com and select retailers would begin in March 2025. Nike’s announcement describes its design and intended use.
Nike says the Vaporfly 4 is roughly 10% lighter than the Vaporfly 3 and 20 grams lighter than the original Vaporfly from 2017. Those are manufacturer comparisons; the announcement does not specify an independent measurement protocol for them.
How does the Vaporfly 4 fit?
Doctors of Running describes a snug, low-volume fit, particularly around the toes, and reports mild heel slippage. Try it on with the socks you plan to race in and check that your toes have enough room while your heel stays secure. The reviewer suggests trying a half size up if you want more room, but that is an individual suggestion—not a universal sizing rule. Doctors of Running’s review provides the fit observations.

What does it feel like to run in?
Doctors of Running characterizes the Vaporfly 4’s ride as firmer and snappier than earlier Vaporfly versions. In that reviewer’s experience, it responds better when the pace rises and feels less special at slower speeds. That makes your intended pace and preference for a firm, responsive ride important considerations: a carbon-plated racer is not automatically the best choice for every run.
Which race distances and surfaces suit it?
Nike lists the shoe for 5K through marathon. Doctors of Running and Believe in the Run are more enthusiastic about faster efforts and shorter road-race distances, particularly through the half marathon. These are reviewer preferences, not a restriction on the shoe’s stated range. Consider how you actually race: the shoe’s intended distance range is broad, while its reported ride is most engaging at faster paces. Believe in the Run’s review discusses its use in faster racing.

The Vaporfly 4 is better suited to roads and tracks than trails, dirt, or cross-country. Doctors of Running reports weak traction away from road and track, so it is not a strong choice if your race or regular routes include loose or uneven surfaces.

Is the Vaporfly 4 stable?
RunRepeat flags the shoe’s narrow heel platform and stability limitations, particularly for heel strikers. Its reviewers also found that the reduced stack height could make the shoe feel somewhat more stable than earlier versions for some runners. Those observations do not establish that it will feel stable for every stride. If you rely on a broad platform or want a secure landing when your form changes late in a race, assess the heel hold and platform in person before committing.

How much does it weigh, and what are its measurements?
Published weights differ by size and measurement source, so they should not be treated as directly comparable. RunRepeat reports a 166 g lab-measured weight without a matching size specified here. Believe in the Run lists 184 g for a US men’s size 10.5 and 139 g for a US women’s size 7.5. Believe in the Run also reports a 36 mm heel, 30 mm forefoot, and 6 mm drop. What do the reviews say about durability?
RunRepeat rates toebox durability highly in its lab work, while Doctors of Running notes possible early outsole wear. These observations concern different parts of the shoe and are not necessarily contradictory: a strong toebox result does not establish how long the outsole will last.

Should you buy the Nike Vaporfly 4?
It is worth considering if you want a fast-feeling road racer, prefer a firm and responsive ride at faster paces, and can get a secure fit in its low-volume shape. Look elsewhere if you need generous toe room, a wider heel platform, or traction for mixed and off-road terrain. The shoe’s fit and stability are consequential enough that an in-person try-on is useful where available.

Nike’s announcement quotes athlete Mohammed Ahmed, identified as a Canadian long-distance runner, calling it “the ideal Vaporfly” and saying, “Nike nailed it.” That is an athlete endorsement in the manufacturer’s release, not independent evidence of performance.
