The Pegasus 42’s biggest change is underfoot: it replaces the Pegasus 41’s separate heel and forefoot Air Zoom pods with one curved, full-length Air Zoom unit, while retaining ReactX foam. Nike also revises the forefoot shape, upper and outsole. Whether that makes the 42 the better buy depends on how its ride and fit feel to you—and the price difference in your market.
What changed from Pegasus 41 to Pegasus 42?
Midsole: two Air Zoom pods become one full-length unit
The Pegasus 41 has separate Air Zoom pods in the heel and forefoot. In the Pegasus 42, a curved Air Zoom unit runs the length of the shoe, surrounded by ReactX foam. Nike says the redesign is intended to deliver a smoother, more propulsive ride. ReactX remains part of the midsole, so this is a change to the Air Zoom layout rather than a switch to a different foam platform. Nike’s Pegasus 42 product listing describes the design.
Ride impressions are not unanimous. A Tom’s Guide reviewer reported a smoother transition and more pop at toe-off in a comparison run. RTINGS, by contrast, found the cushioning advantage less pronounced while running and did not find a significant energy-return difference. Those are reviewer assessments, not proof that every runner will feel the same change.

Nike Japan says the 42 adds 3 mm of cushioning under the forefoot without increasing the shoe’s overall sole thickness. Nike also describes more toe spring, an updated last and additional room in the toe box and forefoot compared with the 41. The upper is described as softer, more breathable mesh. These are design changes, not a guarantee that the 42 will fit every foot better; Tom’s Guide’s reviewer did not notice a large upper difference.

Outsole pattern and coverage
The 42 has an updated waffle outsole with high-abrasion rubber and flex grooves, according to Nike; RTINGS also notes a changed pattern. Tom’s Guide observed less rubber coverage on the 42 than on the 41 and raised a possible durability trade-off. That observation is not a long-term durability test, so it does not establish how long either shoe will last.
Weight and drop depend on the sample and method
Published and measured figures vary with shoe size and measurement method, so they should not be treated as a direct, universal weight comparison.

- We sculpted our full-length Air Zoom unit to deliver a propulsive feel and Nike's highest energy return from heel to toe-off.
- ReactX foam is 13% more responsive than previous React technology.
- Greater toe spring than previous model due to an updated silhouette that increases the curve of the toe box
- Full-length Air Zoom unit compared to forefoot and heel Air Zoom units in previous models

Nike Japan’s February 25, 2026 announcement claims the Pegasus 42 has 15% higher energy return than the Pegasus 41, based on Nike’s own test results. That is a manufacturer comparison, not an independent finding. RTINGS did not find a significant energy-return difference in its comparison, so independent assessment does not confirm a meaningful advantage. The headline percentage alone cannot tell you how much livelier the shoe will feel on your runs.

- We placed mesh with tighter woven fabric in high-wear areas, like the toes. Mesh combines with open holes on the upper for breathability. Plus, Flywire technology integrates with the laces to help secure your midfoot.
Is the Pegasus 42 worth upgrading to?
If you already own a Pegasus 41, the 42 is a design update, not an evidence-backed must-have upgrade. Consider trying it if you want to experience the full-length Air Zoom layout or need more room in the forefoot. A Tom’s Guide reviewer preferred the smoother transition and toe-off feel, but RTINGS found the practical cushioning difference less obvious. Your own fit and ride preference matter more than the manufacturer’s energy-return claim.
Nike Japan announced a planned retail release date of April 9, 2026, for Japan; that date does not establish availability elsewhere. Nike’s European listing showed €139.99 when accessed on October 7, 2026, a market-specific price that may change.

Should you buy Pegasus 41 on sale or Pegasus 42?
| Your situation | More sensible choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The shoes are close in price, and the 42 fits and feels good | Pegasus 42 | You get the revised midsole layout, forefoot design, upper and outsole. |
| The 41 already fits comfortably and costs substantially less | Pegasus 41 | Its familiar fit may be better value if you do not need the 42’s changes. |
| You are unsure about the roomier forefoot or ride | Try both | Nike describes more forefoot space, but fit and ride preference are personal. |
Tom’s Guide reported a US $79 sale example for the Pegasus 41 using a promotion in May 2026 and said it was often available below $100 at that time; it reported a $145 US price for the Pegasus 42. These are historical, dated examples—not current offers. Check live prices for your size and color before deciding.

How to make the decision
- Start with fit. If possible, try both shoes in the size you expect to run in. Pay particular attention to toe-box comfort and whether your foot feels secure through the midfoot.
- Compare the ride you actually prefer. The 42’s full-length unit is intended to create a smoother, more propulsive feel, but reviews differ on how obvious the benefit is. Do not assume the 15% manufacturer claim will translate into a noticeable difference for you.
- Check the price gap for your exact pair. Compare the same market, size and color. A substantial discount can make the 41 the more sensible value if it already suits you.
- Choose based on your use and priorities. Nike positions the Pegasus as a versatile everyday road-running trainer. The comparison does not establish a universal performance winner or a long-term outsole-durability advantage.
